Soloist SJ DENNEY is a singer/songwriter from England! He's released several EP's, along with a new single with even newer music expected out next year! He goes onto say much about his styling of music, and his focus upon his music and recording process.
1. Please tell us about the history of your band and its members
I'm Stuart and I'm a singer-songwriter from Essex, England. I've been playing music (and writing songs) for about 15 years. Originally, it was bands like Oasis, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Guns n' Roses that got me into music. This passion resulted in me fronting various bands and duos, playing across the UK and Ireland. My previous duo had the privilege of supporting The Bluetones. As with anyone, my taste has evolved and my favourite acts these days include The Beatles, Neil Young, Jeff Buckley and Nick Drake. I think these influences really shine through in my music.
2. What’s the origin of the band’s name?
Several years ago I went solo, and I thought my full name (Stuart Jon Denney) was a bit boring and not very rock 'n' roll. I decided to make the (questionable) upgrade to S J Denney. On reflection, I'm not convinced it works that much better, but I've also learnt that the music makes the name.
3. Where is the band based out of and what is your music scene like there? Are there any local bands you could recommend?
The music scene is pretty solid in Essex. I've been on the circuit for a fair few years now and I'd recommend fellow singer-songwriter Roisin O'Hagan, who has features on several of my records.
4. How would you describe your style?
I'd probably describe my music as 'Folk Plus'. It's got all the ingredients of Indie Folk but I also try to throw some additional genres into the mix, such as Psychedelic Rock and Trip Hop. I personally think of my music as a melting pot of all my 60s and 70s influence, with a modern theme running through the production and lyrical themes.
5. What have you released so far and what can someone expect from your works?
I've released several EPs and one album. You can hear a lot of my back catalogue online. My music really took a big step forward once I started working with The Animal Farm. In 2019 I released the 'Forgotten Friends EP'. From this point forward, I really feel like I've grown up. There's no conscious decision to sound like anybody else and my lyrics are far less cliched. I think people who listen to my music can expect an organic production and lots of melody.

6. Do you have any new music in the works?
I've just released my latest single 'The Sticking Point'. I have another single and EP already recorded, which will be released later this year. I'm also currently recording a standalone single and a batch of records for 2022.

7. How about playing shows and touring, have anything planned out?
At the moment my touring life is on hold. I hope the gigs return fast, once we're over the worst of COVID-19. That's why I'm focusing my attention on recording. Hopefully, these new releases will further improve my setlists when gigs return.
8. What plans do you have for the future as a band?
I'm writing and recording a lot of songs at the moment. I've rarely been this inspired. It's probably something to do with how the world has been over the past few years. I intend to return to gigging as soon as possible and also try to get my music into TV and film, if at all possible.

10. What is it you’d like a listener to remember the most when hearing your music for the first time?
I'd ask them to remember that my songs tell a story and the records they are part of telling a bigger story. Try to immerse yourself in that and listen to my music the old fashioned way, whilst not doing much else.
