Horror punks FREAKSHOW SINEMA have a debut album out, and are writing new music, with plans to record soon enough. The band goes into discussion about horror, punk, music, shows planned and much else that keeps the spooky vibes alive!
1. Where did you get the idea for the band name, you planned it or came out just like that?
I was working at Walmart over night, and I was walking through electronics, and saw a set of crappy low budget horror movies that no one would have ever heard of. The name of the set of movies was Freakshow Cinema. I told Ty about it when we were drinking one night, and he said if we put and S on it, it would be cooler.
2. Why did you want to play this genre?
Horror punk/metal type bands have always been some of my favorites. Wednesday 13/Murderdolls, Rob Zombie, Alice Cooper, Misfits, all have been favorites for a good portion of my life.
3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?
Ty and I were friends for a few years before forming the band. We were both bass players, so we knew we both couldn't play bass if we were in the same band. Ty was going to switch to guitar, and I was going to do bass. One day, I did an impression of Wednesday 13, and Ty said I would be doing vocals, and he would switch to bass. Definitely a different thing than I ever expected to be doing.
4. Where is the band based out of and what is your music scene like there? Are there any local bands you could recommend?
We are north of Atlanta. The scene is a mix of a lot of different genres. We've got bands we like to play shows with like Die 985, the Casket Creatures, Fatal Attraction, Powderkeg. Our drummer is a part of many different bands like, Far From Sober, Ether 9, Stoneman, and I'm sure I've forgotten what else he's a part of.
5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?
Horror movies and TV shows, true crime stories, how horrible people are about politics.
6. What are your songs about? (What specific themes do they cover?)
Dead girls is about final girls in horror movies, and also a little about how killers have a mommy complex, where they either think their mother is the greatest person, or the worst person. Other songs deal with other horror topics that I find interesting.
7. Do you write your own songs? (Discuss the songwriting process in detail.)
Ty usually writes a riff, and then it goes from there. If I have lyrics to add over it, I do that, other times I write to what he plays. I can be inspired sometimes just by hearing someone say a phrase that catches my ear, or just by finding a topic interesting. One of our newer songs, Necrophile Scumbag, was written because Ty and I were listening to Last Podcast on the Left talking about necrophilia, and Ty said I should write about it.
8. What have you released so far and what can someone expect from your works?
We have our first album, Welcome to the Show, it's been out for a long time. It was more of a cross between horror punk, and metal.
9. Do you have any new music in the works?
We are currently trying to write new music, we have 3 new songs, and our older song Deathocracy was reworked a little bit. We'd like to record at some point this year.
10. How about playing shows and touring, have anything planned out?
We currently have 2 shows we have booked, and are looking to get more soon, and expand to other venues that weren't around when we were active 5 years ago. We'd also like to play in some surrounding states again like South Carolina and Florida, and also play places like Tennessee and other states we didn't get to play before.
11. What plans do you have for the future as a band?
We'd like to get new material out at some point this year, and keep playing shows, and play with newer bands that weren't around before, also play with our old friends that are still around.
12. Where can we listen to your band and where can we buy your stuff?
Our album, Welcome to the Show is on just about every type of streaming service, iTunes, Amazon music, Spotify, YouTube. You can also find it on Ebay from a Russian bootlegger.
