Arrival Of Autumn's Ty Fox Talks Of New Music

Since early 2011, Arrival Of Autumn has come from nothing and now have a large, and still growing fan base. They spent the last half of 2011 writing and recording their first EP titled "Endless Nights". They released Endless Nights on March 20th, 2012 and in just two days it placed #6 on the iTunes top 10 metal albums. They spent the rest of the summer playing shows in Edmonton, Grande Prairie, and surrounding cities and towns, promoting their EP. They've now been writing and recording new material for their next CD release, which is expected to be out at the end of 2013. Drummer Ty Fox took the time to discuss the band and CD progress and much more.

1.  So what can you tell me about this new album?

TY: The new album is a little faster paced, darker and more mature. We as a band have found our sound and really put it down on this new record. No ground is left uncovered.

2. What title did you decide to go with and is there a meaning behind it?

TY: Deciding the title of the album was tough but we chose the name “Shadows” because it’s a word that best represents the music and the atmosphere of this album. This record is dark!

3. Is this album going to be a concept release?

TY: This album is not a concept release but it does have a lot to do with owls. Most of the art deals with the imagery of one specific song. Maybe some day a concept release would be cool but this album focuses on a ton of different things both lyrically and musically.

4.Where are you in the recording process?

TY: The album is just under half way done. We are taking our sweet ass time doing the album because we want everything to be great and we are focusing on every aspect of every second of every track. All of us are working very hard making sure this will be a great piece of music.

5.  Who is producing the album? How has the producer aided the recording process?

TY: Our friend Bevin Booth is producing the album and has been a great deal of help. He has great ideas and is hard on us making sure we deliver the goods.

6.  Where are you recording the album?

TY: Shadows is being recorded at Bevin’s home studio. It works out perfect for us because it’s a hidden gem of a studio that’s close to home. Our producer really knows his stuff and we are thrilled at the quality of the recordings.

7.  Did the band have any definitive goals they were shooting for before the recording process began for this album?

TY: The band did have a few goals to strive for before the recording process. First of all to surpass our first release which I am proud to say that we have done. Another goal was to be at the forefront of changing the game for the better. Not to slam anyone but bands seem to be pumping out the same rehashed stuff over and over again. This record is different from what everyone else is doing. I personally feel it’s a breath of fresh air.

8.  Are you using any new instrumentation you've never used in the recording process before?

TY: So far this album is pretty organic. There will be a few surprises and twists like some strategically placed samples. But there will not be any dubstep or dance music wedged anywhere on this CD haha.

9. When did you start the songwriting process? How was it different/similar to the previous Arrival Of Autumn album.

TY: Songwriting began last summer and it has been way different so far. All of us have grown as musicians. Our styles are blending very nicely on this album and now that we have found our sound we write more as a team and less individual. Before some of the writing felt forced to maybe sound a certain way.

10. Did you feel any pressure to follow it up?

TY: I myself did not feel any pressure to follow up the last EP. It was a great place to start but we are moving forward. This CD is leaps and bounds ahead of Endless Nights.

11. Can you go into one or two tracks on the new album? If so can you give us the track title and brief description of how the track sounds and came about?

TY: Yes I can. One track that stands out to me is Labyrinth. It embodies everything AOA is about in one song. The track has everything from a beautiful slower ambient mid section to ripping fast drums and maybe one of the catchiest choruses out there.  The song just has a really nice dynamic to it.

12.  How do you think the vibe in the studio will go?

TY: The vibe in the studio has gone great so far. Its not really anybodies favorite place to spend time but always try to have fun with it. You will most likely see a few studio updates about how silly we tend to be when we get work done. Its all about having fun and making the best out of a situation!

13. When can we expect the new album to be released?

TY: The new album should be released sometime after summer. Like I said we are taking our time making sure we yield the best results!

14. What can fans expect to see from you in the future?

TY: They can expect a lot from us. We will be coming for all of you! Big things are coming up with the release of this CD. People are really going to dig it because its something different and fresh.

15. Is that your final answer?

TY: I have honestly been staring at this question for like 20 minutes trying to figure out a smart ass comment. Unfortunately I can’t think of much I am simply  drawing blanks. I will have something funny to say before the next interview!
