Edge Of Paradise's Margarita Discusses How to Do the Immortal Waltz

Edge Of Paradise released a debut album "Mask" which lead to them writing and recording for the follow-up release "Immortal Waltz", that built the solid ground for the sound, and the band themselves. Since then they have been playing shows, touring from here to there, with plans on releasing new music piece by piece. "Shade Of Crazy" being the newest with more material in the making is coming soon. Frontwomen vocalist Margarita Monet discusses the band's last album "Immortal Waltz", new song "Shade Of Crazy", and what else may be coming from them.

1. Please tell us about the history of your band and its members.

Margarita: I met Dave Bates (our guitarist) on a random music project. Previously, Dave had band that was fronted by Robin McAuley from MSG, Robin got an offer to tour as a singer for Survivor and the band kind of went their separate ways. So when I started working with Dave, we knew we had similar visions and goals so right away we decided to form our new band and in 2011, Edge Of Paradise was born. Few months after formation we released our debut album Mask, Dave had a lot of unreleased material that he wrote with Robin and had Gregg Bissonette and Tony Franklin as the rhythm section. The album served as a foundation to build the band from as we were still searching for our sound.

The first song Dave and I wrote together was In A Dream and that kind of set the way for the rest of the music, that's also when we were introduced to the legendary Michael Wagener and he was a big part of helping us create the sound of our album Immortal Waltz that we released in 2015. During writing and recording we would take time off to tour, we've toured over 30 states now, it also took us a while to find the perfect lineup, but we were lucky to have met bassist Nick Ericson and drummer John Chominsky, we've been together since 2013 and are going strong! We've recently released a new song/video Shade Of Crazy, we're excited for the evolution of our sound and can't wait to unveil more of the new music this fall!

2. What’s the origin of the band’s name?

Margarita: We live in Los Angeles, and Dave and I wanted to come up with the name that represents the music, the contrast between the heavy guitars and some of my classically influence melodies, but also the life around us. Los Angeles, seems like a land of Paradise, but the sunshine can be deceiving, it's easy to fall off the edge and extremely hard to climb back to the top!

3. Where is the band based out of and what is your music scene like there? Are there any local bands you could recommend?

Margarita: We're based in Los Angeles, California. Music scene here is ok, the problem is that it's so over saturated that most venues take advantage of that and focus on quantity and not quality, which doesn't help the scene. It's also very expensive here, so people don't go out as much to shows, but there are a lot of opportunities and a lot of great bands from here! Some of the cool bands are Heaven Below, The Chimpz, SoulSign to name a few!

4. How would you describe your style?

Margarita: We are a heavy metal band with industrial and symphonic edge. I'm from a classical piano background so that comes through in some of the songs, especially in the keyboard parts and some vocal melodies. But the new songs are heading towards a heavier more industrial sound, we've been experimenting with the darker side of Paradise, it's been fun!

Our sound is aggressive, but very melodic, with driving rhythms, heavy. But overall the songs are dynamic, our live show is theatrical and at times we even bring out a heavy metal circus. The music will definitely take you on a roller coaster ride! :)

5. Why did you think that people should go forth and pick up your latest release "Immortal Waltz"? How does one do an immortal waltz, thought there was only one type of waltz?

Margarita: I think it's something unique and different that people might not have heard before, as we are from difference musical background and I think we found a cool way to have that compliment each other in the songs.

Immortal Waltz is about the constant dance with life and death, we're all given one chance at life and it's up to us what we want to do with it, I personally want to create something that will live on forever. :)

6. Whereabouts are you in the process as far as any "new" music goes.

Margarita: We recently released our latest single/video "Shade Of Crazy" you can check it out here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TcpKlGH0vdw.

We've been working with producer Chuck Johnson (Korn, SlipknotÉ) he is awesome and it's been a lot of fun! We will be releasing another song and video in November, I think it's the most exciting song so far, and we're recording more music now, so stay tuned, lot so new material coming!

7. How about playing shows and touring, what do you have planned?

Margarita: We love touring, seeing our friends and fans and making new ones! We recently got back from the East Coast. Oct 15 we're playing in Houston, TX at BFE Rock Club and in November we're touring all over the west coast with the bands Heaven Below and Ghost Ship Octavius. We're also working on booking UK and Europe in the spring/summer of 2017 as well as South America. So as we grow the band we hope to bring our show to more and more places in the world!

8. What plans do you have for the rest of this year, leading right into this next coming year?

Margarita: We'll be releasing another single and music video and touring! We also have some cool giveaways coming up (stay tuned for guitar giveaway) and we always do something fun for Christmas, maybe we'll remake another Christmas song and edit together some cool footage we've acquired over the past year. :)
