Tubefreeks' Paul says We Rock!

Rockers TUBEFREEKS have recently released their third full-length album "The Dry Tide", with current activity of working on the next album. Frontman vocalist Paul van Valkenburgh discusses the album, band insight, and what plans are in-store.

1. Please tell us about the history of your band and its members.

Paul: Tubefreeks is a hard rock band from Maryland and recently released our 3rd full-length album, "The Dry Tide".  Original members Paul van Valkenburgh / Vocals and Geoff Burrell / Drums are joined by newcomers Brian Murray / Lead Guitar, Todd Stevens / Rhythm Guitar and Vocals, and Jon Weed / Bass.

2. What’s the origin of the band’s name?

Paul: The name originated from a novel by Thomas Pynchon titled Vineland where people who are addicted to watching TV land in a rehab center.  The character in the book refers to these people as Tubefreeks and they spell it the same way we do with two E's in 'Freeks'.  Over the years, many people have given many meanings to the word including surfers and people who smoke unnamed substances from cylindrical tubes.  We say it means whatever you want it to mean!

3. Where is the band based out of and what is your music scene like there? Are there any local bands you could recommend?

Paul: We are from the Maryland area which is the Baltimore / Washington DC region.  There is a great music scene in our area.  It is a bit more fragmented into different genres where it used to be more pure rock.  But there are plenty of rockers still. There are a ton of great bands in the area.

4. How would you describe your style?

Paul: Some people call us grunge, others metal, others hard rock. We just call it rock because our influences cover decades of rock and hundreds of bands.

5. What have you released so far and what can someone expect from your works?

Paul: Our most recent album is "The Dry Tide", released in 2017.  A few years back we had released "Complex Disorders".  Both have 12 original compositions.

6. Do you have any new music in the works?

Paul: Yes, we have songs already in the works for another album we plan to record in 2018.  Our new guitarist Todd Stevens has been particularly creative with new music.

7. How about playing shows and touring, have anything planned out?

Paul: We played a pretty packed schedule around Maryland and Virginia in 2017.  We opened for national acts Fuel and Wayland and are opening for Tora Tora in December.  Also, we have done several local showcases with other area bands.  In 2018 we plan to do a lot more out of town shows with plans for shows down South (Florida and the Carolinas), in the Northeast (NY, PA and Boston), and the Midwest (Kentucky, Missouri and Minnesota).  And anywhere else we can set up good shows!

8. What plans do you have for the future as a band?

Paul: We just plan to rock anywhere and everywhere and to keep putting out new, original, interesting hard rock music!

9. Where can we listen to your band and where can we buy your stuff?

Paul: Just google Tubefreeks with two E's!!  We have music available everywhere including our website (tubefreeks.com), iTunes, Bandcamp, CD Baby etc. Or come on out to our shows to hear us live and we have hard copies of all of our music!

10. What is it you’d like a listener to remember the most when hearing your music for the first time?

Paul: We would like to say thanks to all of our great friends around the world.  We appreciate your spreading the word.  We're all about having fun, so just make sure you are ready to rock when you sit down to listen to Tubefreeks!
