SUGAR, THE “SOME LIKE IT HOT” MUSICAL, TO OPEN MUSICAL THEATRE GUILD’S 22nd SEASON

Musical Theatre Guild, the winner of the Los Angeles Drama Critic’s Circle Margaret Harford Award for sustained excellence in the theatre, will open their 22nd Anniversary season with SUGAR, the stage musical version of the classic Hollywood film “Some Like It Hot.”  This is the first of four musicals chosen in a season celebrating musical stage adaptions of films.  The one-night-only concert will take place at Glendale’s historic Alex Theatre on Sunday, September 24, 2017 at 7:00 PM.

In 1959 Lemmon, Curtis and Monroe lit up the silver screen in Billy Wilder’s classic film Some Like It Hot.  In 1972 theatre creative giants Jule Styne, Bob Merrill and Peter Stone transformed the property into a new musical titled SUGAR garnering four Tony© Award nominations and running for 505 performances.  Set in prohibition era Chicago and Miami, SUGAR tells the story of two unemployed musicians, Joe and Jerry, who, after witnessing a mob murder, go undercover as women and join an all-female band. Complications ensue when Joe (now Josephine) falls for the beautiful band singer, Sugar Kane.

Musical Theatre Guild presents rarely staged or forgotten musicals in a semi-staged, script-in-hand format, utilizing professional union actors and a live orchestra.  The company membership roster of talent is a “who’s who” of musical theatre performers, and the cast of SUGAR is no exception.  Starring in the title role is Melissa Fahn with Matthew Patrick Davies and Zachary Ford as Jerry and Joe and Jimmy Gleason as Osgood.  Other MTG members featured in the show are Kelly Lester, Glenn Rosenblum, Glenn Shiroma and Chuck Bergman (reprising his role from the show’s national tour.)  Also in the cast are guest artists Eric B. Anthony, Bryan Chesters, Caitlyn Faucher, Anthony Gruppuso, Amir Levy, Dana Shaw, Karlee Squires and Ann Villella.

SUGAR will be directed by Kirsten Chandler, choreographed by Wendy Rosoff, musical directed by Jan Roper and is under the production supervision of Eileen Barnett.

As part of Musical Theatre Guild’s commitment to engage younger generations in the arts, a portion of the tickets to SUGAR will be allocated, free of charge, to underserved schools.

The “MTG Goes to the Movies” season continues with WOMEN OF THE VERGE OF A NERVOUS BREAKDOWN (November 12, 2017), HIGH SOCIETY (February 11, 2018) and HONEYMOON IN VEGAS (May 11, 2018).

The Alex Theatre is located at 216 N. Brand Blvd in downtown Glendale, CA.   Season and single tickets are available by visiting www.alextheatre.org or by calling 818-243-ALEX.     Additional information on MTG can be found at www.musicaltheatreguild.com.
