Sweden melodic death metallers ABANDON AGONY has released singles, an EP and a debut album out this month! The band discusses the album, playing lots of shows that's the main deal from here on out!
1. Where did you get the idea for the band name, you planned it or did it come out just like that?
The name came pretty naturally during early discussions when we started the band. We wanted something that reflected darker emotions and inner struggle but still sounded powerful and memorable. Abandon Agony captured that feeling immediately.
2. Why did you want to play this genre?
Melodic death metal has always been a genre that connected with us emotionally. It combines aggression, atmosphere and melody in a way very few genres can. Growing up in Sweden, bands like In Flames, Dark Tranquillity and At the Gates naturally became a big part of our musical foundation.
3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?
Some of us did, yes. The local music scene is fairly connected, so we had crossed paths in different bands and projects over the years before Abandon Agony came together in late 2023.
4. Where is the band based out of and what is your music scene like there? Are there any local bands you could recommend?
We’re based in Trollhättan, Sweden. The scene here might be smaller than Gothenburg, but there are still a lot of passionate musicians and strong metal bands around. We definitely recommend checking out The Crown from our neighboring area, along with several underground bands keeping the local scene alive.
5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?
A lot of inspiration comes from emotions, world events and the feeling of living in uncertain times. Movies, books and personal experiences also play a big role. Sometimes inspiration comes from something very specific, other times just from a certain atmosphere or feeling.
6. What are your songs about? (What specific themes do they cover?)
Our songs often revolve around themes like collapse, transformation, inner conflict, humanity, fear and the darker sides of human nature. There’s a dystopian feeling running through a lot of the material, but also reflection and change rather than just destruction.
7. Do you write your own songs? (Discuss the songwriting process in detail.)
Yes, everything is written by the band. Usually, songs begin with riffs or melodies, then grow naturally from there. Sometimes someone brings almost a full structure, other times it’s built together in the rehearsal room piece by piece. We spend a lot of time working on dynamics and atmosphere, so the songs feel alive rather than just technical.
8. What have you released so far and what can someone expect from your works?
So far, we’ve released the single The Truth, Dark Matter Reissue EP and singles, including Polar Shift and Writing on the Wall. Our debut album Endbringer releases on May 22. People can expect melodic death metal with a mix of aggression, atmosphere, memorable melodies and a modern but still organic sound.
9. Do you have any new music in the works?
Right now, our main focus is on the release of Endbringer and everything surrounding that, but we’re constantly writing ideas and already thinking ahead toward future material.
10. How about playing shows and touring, have anything planned out?
Absolutely. Live shows are a huge part of why we do this. We’re playing Sweden Rock Festival this summer and we’re currently working on booking more dates for late summer, autumn and beyond.
11. What plans do you have for the rest of this year?
The main focus is releasing Endbringer, playing as many live shows as possible and continuing to build the band. We’re also constantly developing the visual side of our live shows and preparing for the next chapter already.
