Quite a bit of talk has been said about Fake Figures an act that features members from notable bands like Atreyu, Hotwire, Nations Afire, and Scars Of Tomorrow. While having formed in 2011 and released their debut EP "Hail The Sycophants" that same year they wanted to blend the elements of alternative, metal, and punk keeping an undertone style from the late 90s era. When that ended up working to their fullest efforts they decided to change things up. After a few years had passed they re-entered the studio to work on the follow-up release another EP entitled "They Must Be Destroyed". This one featuring the debut of drummer Steve Ludwig of Nations Afire and writing contribution from guitarist Heather Baker. While this release does take a departure from the experimental sound from the first EP this new material takes a step into the direction of how the band sound have sounded from the start. Songs like "You Stupid Beast", "The Light", "Normal Life", and "Sit and Burn", provides that formula that other bands have tended to use except the way Fake Figure's have done it; makes it a lot more fresher and creative, having it sound more to their own appeal and having an advantage of creating their own version and vision of this particular style of music. "They Must Be Destroyed" is a superb follow-up edition and surly whenever a debut full-length appears it will be just as good if not better.

Fake Figures have premiered their new track "Sit and Burn" online. The song comes from their upcoming EP They Must Be Destroyed and the single for the track is available now on iTunes. The effort was produced by Beau Burchell (The Bronx, Saosin, Middle Class Rut).

Uniting from many different bands (Atreyu, Hotwire, Scars of Tomorrow), Fake Figures has come, and approaches at full tilt with a sonically diverse platter for those to choose from. Having the good fortune of each member being associated with their individual acts has led to an immense arsenal of song writing capabilities and comfort during live performances.

The band released their debut EP Hail The Sycophants in December of 2012 and ready to release their follow-up EP They Must Be Destroyed! Frontman vocalist Rus Martin discusses the EP and other plans these guys have including with their previous projects!

1. Introduce yourself, tell me what you do in Fake Figures, and how long the band has been together.

Rus: Greetings and salutations… I am Rus Martin and I sing in the band. I also do as much filming and editing for the band as possible, video-wise. Well, as a recording and live playing band I think it's been since early 2010? But Bob and Travis have had the concept and demoing since….uhh, I forgot.

2. Where did you record this album and, how was the vibe for everybody throughout the whole process?

Rus: We recorded the EP in Van Nuys at The Bronx's studio "Big Game Lodge". Fantastic place, really. The vibe? Well, most of the time we were all pretty much doing our parts on our own with no one else there with Beau.. except for drums - watch -(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lEu6NniEno8)

3. What was it like to work with producer Beau Burchell?

Rus: You know it was a blast. He comes from the same background of music we all grew up in and has also expanded his arsenal of taste over the years, as well for us. So after time goes by and we all get together some many years down the line it's like we we're all on the same page from the first page. Great ideas, great structures, and great communication to implement new things into the songs. I can't say enough about Beau.

4. Is there any story or concept behind the They Must Be Destroyed title?

Rus: Well of course…I wanted to express my disdain for the secret society known as he Illuminati. They have been transforming the way all people of Earth live through the invisible power of the government and using the wealth of the 13 royal bloodlines to support their cult and its objectives for a New World Order. I must say their war on human existence hasn't affected me personally, yet, but as a nation, as a collective people trying to survive on this gift called Earth, they've been able to get away with so much evil that the majority of people accept it as 'just life'. Now there are plenty of rumors, theories, and much out there that can paint this ideology as some mythical sci-fi story, but that's because there are those who intend to act as loyalists and aid in their cause, regardless of initiation. If you think something is not right economically, politically, environmentally, scientifically, with the way things are today, and it goes beyond the Donkey and the Elephant…then you might be experiencing an insight called human instinct. Use it, find your own information out there beyond what you have been comfortable reading. Get uncomfortable. Find the dots and connect them yourself, and if you believe it to be false..carry on with your life. I can only tell you so much.

5. Select two songs from They Must Be Destroyed and what inspired the lyrics.

Rus: "Here Come the Idiots"…what I have just told you in my last answer explains what the lyrics are based upon. My own awakening to a different realm of knowledge that helped me confirm some questions I had about the things I was witness to and how to process it all. "Sit and Burn" almost a follow up to the later. This details the paranoia I developed about finding out all this new information and how to apply what I've learned (and am still learning) into my life now. I know for a fact I won't just remain in the mind-shackles covertly installed, one time, by the 'powers that be'. I am not in the people-sheeple.

6. Who did the cover art for They Must Be Destroyed and how much input did you have on it?

Rus: The man known as Ruben Martinez. He did the art for our last EP. I came to him with a bunch of ideas about a vision I had that would be a nice, clean, and simple cover. I know I wanted a pyramid and the bleeding eye…I gave him a few more details and he just took all of it and created what I think is the raddest album cover I've ever been apart of as a musician in a band.

7. What's your take on They Must Be Destroyed as a whole?

Rus: I want the complete antithesis of what they want. To find out what they want… I suggest doing some reading.

8. What's your favorite song on the EP right now?

Rus: I dunnooo…probably You Stupid Beast, only because I just heard it today as a mastered version. But…I'm not a fan of favorites of my own songs… I like'm all.

9. Is it important for you to paint visual pictures with the songs?

Rus: Not really…I tried that a bunch in my old bands…and I always felt like I was just confusing people. So with this release I really wanted to focus on being as clear and precise as possible with the words.

10. What would be the cinematic equivalent of They Must Be Destroyed?

Rus: What a great question. 1984.

11. Where is the new material headed?

Rus: "All the way to #1!" - Rick Dee's

12. When can we expect to see a full-length release?

Rus: I really hope sooner than later…it took us so long to record this EP only because our personal schedules are so F'ED we can barely keep our heads above water to live.

13. Does Atreyu, Hotwire, or Scars of Tomorrow have any plans for new music?

Rus: Atreyu might…I've heard a rumor somewhere on the internet. Hotwire, nope. Scars…I don't know…might need to ask Robert Bob Bradley that one.

14. What do you all have planned for the rest of 2013?

Rus: A bunch of shows with all of our friends bands and whoever else...

15. Any final words to the fans out there?

Rus: "…eternal hostility against every form of tyranny over the mind of man." - Thomas Jefferson

All bands come to a point in time where things need to stop this is what happened with Atreyu. They went on to announce that the band would be going on an indefinite hiatus for the time being. So with that guitarist Travis Miguel went on to start something new after some time surpassed thus Fake Figures came into focus. Taking former member Bob Bradley of Scars Of Tomorrow and Rus Martin of Hotwire this combo would bring forth the epicenes that is what it is. Fake Figures not too long ago released their debut EP "Hail The Sycophants" in which Travis Miguel took the time to discuss this release, the band, and why we should be on the lookout for them from here on out.

1. Tell us about the band?

Travis: Bob Bradley (Bass) approached me a while back about starting a new project together. I've known him for a number of years through his time in Scars of Tomorrow. Atreyu and Scars played a lot of shows together in the Orange County area and eventually, we (Atreyu) took them out on our headlining tour in '05. At the time, I don't think we knew exactly what kind of project we wanted it to be, but because Bob and I have pretty similar tastes in music, we didn't care we just knew we wanted to do something. I've known Justin Pointer (drums) since high school and have played together in various different bands when we were younger.

Bob and Justin also played together in SS Nova a few years ago. We didn't really know any singers who would fit the bill for this band. We held a brief online "audition", but nothing came of it. Most of what we got back was the generic metalcore thing. We wanted someone who sounded like "Rus from Hotwire". We figured, to do one better, and actually get "Rus from Hotwire,” couldn’t hurt to ask. At first, he was a bit apprehensive about doing loud music again, but once he heard a few of the rough demos we were working on, he agreed to join. Initially, we planned on just being a four piece, but a lot of the guitar parts became more and more layered, and it would probably sound pretty lame and a pain in the ass for me to try to pull it all off by myself in a live situation. So we called up our friend Heather Baker to join the fold.

2. Tell me where did the name Fake Figures come from and what does it mean?

Travis: It doesn't mean anything really. One day, Rus and I were talking about how even by today’s' standards, a lot of the old Twilight Zone episodes are still really creepy. In the episode "The After Hours", a young girl finds out she's actually a mannequin, or a "fake figure". Just sounds kinda cool I guess...No real theory or concept behind it.

3. "Hail The Sycophants" is your debut EP so what does the title represent?

Travis: I'm not even sure myself what "Hail The Sycophants" means. Rus came up with the title. A "sycophant" is a self serving ass kissing parasite. I guess you'll have to reach your own conclusion.

4. What are your songs about? (What specific themes do they cover?)

Travis: Rus' lyrics are pretty vague and open-ended. He writes about what he sees, human reactions, and the world in general. When most people write lyrics, not every single word or line is meant to be taken as gospel. One word or phrase might mean 500 different things to 500 different people.

5. Do you write your own songs? (Discuss the songwriting process in detail.)

Travis: As a matter of fact we do write our own songs. Usually someone who has a song, or at least an idea for a song, we’ll demo it and we send it out to each other. We talk about what we like or don't like, and bounce ideas off each other until we're happy with the final product So it’s all pretty standard stuff.

6. Who are your musical influences?

Travis: Black Flag, MC5, Soundgarden, QOTSA, Slayer, Far, Alice in Chains, NIN, Deftones, Iggy and the Stooges, Will Haven, David Bowie, Failure, White Zombie,...I could go on forever...

7. How do you describe your music to people?

Travis: I usually say something intelligent like, "This shit'll get your ears PREGNANT!"

8. What image do you think your music conveys?

Travis: The image on the cover of "Richard Simmons: Sweatin' to the Oldies Vol 3" DVD comes to mind...

9. When did you get signed with Shillen Records?

Travis: I believe it was October of 2011.

10. Why hasn't Fake Figures gone out on tour? Do you plan to?

Travis: Hopefully at some point soon, we'll be able to tour...Touring, especially nowadays, costs a lot of money...I mean, A LOT of money. So if you or anyone you know wants to throw some $ our way for booking fees, insurance, merchandise, laundry, gas money, a van, food, water, oil changes, equipment maintenance, tolls, etc. feel free.

11. 2012 has what lined up for you guys?

Travis: We'll be filming a video for our song "Something Deadly" this weekend, and I'm assuming it'll be finished mid/late March. We'll be writing and playing live as much as we can during 2012.

12. Is that your final answer?

Travis: Is that your final question?

Whenever the combination of various musicians join forces it could be good or bad but in any case Fake Figures featuring members Russ Martin (Hotwire), guitarist Travis Miguel (Atreyu), guitarist Heather Baker (The Iron Maidens), bassist Bob Bradley (Scars of Tomorrow) & drummer J Po (Nightfall). Thus their EP debut "Hail The Sycophants" shows their musical ability in an instant.

"Perfect No One", opens up with fast driven guitars drum blasting beats that blend well with Russ Martin's vocal skills. Whereas "Something Deadly" has Travis and J Po doing the drum and guitar thing but with total style having it run smooth and heavy from start to finish. Other notable tunes "As We Drift", and "Let Them Bleed", features raw talent with flawless musical ability that stands out like no tomorrow for instance "As We Drift" its accompanied by a sooth piano melody that enforces that rock balland tone that really captures the music. Whilst "Let Them Bleed", is the band's leading single and brings their source of style to a closing point adding on more that we can expect.

Perhaps a full-length album in the making? We can only hope for the better.

Fake Figures will be shooting a music video for “Something Deadly” with director DJay Brawner (Stick To Your Guns, Gym Class Heroes) on Feb 11th/12th. In addition, Fake Figures have announced 2 upcoming shows with Will Haven.

02.03.2012 Billy O’s - Ventura, CA w/ Will Haven
