Hardcore act CONCRETE have their newest album "Mortualis" out via Upstate Records, with some treks of shows aligned here and there, with an expansion for overseas to happen within the next few years. The band discusses how they formed, releasing music, and shows they have set thus far!
1. Where did you get the idea for the band name, you planned it or came out just like that?
It just kinda came out. We researched it and looked for others with the name ahead of time but not everyone does. Years later we wish we had picked something a little more unique but we’ve built a brand with this so it is what it is.
2. Why did you want to play this genre?
We started out more hardcore and it’s morphed into all aspects of extreme metal. Most would classify us as death metal now but we play it because we’re fans and we love it.
3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?
Lenny (vocals) and myself (Jon, guitar) did but as members have changed over the years it’s been a product of circumstance. Being in a band is like being in a family.
4. Where is the band based out of and what is your music scene like there? Are there any local bands you could recommend?
We’re from Albany NY and the scene here is thriving. No matter what style of heavy you’re in to, Albany has it. Invoke thy Wrath, brick by brick, altar, intrusive, malefic, halo bite, flatwounds, horse grave to name a small handful. There really is something for everyone here.
5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?
I write the music based off of how I want the music to feel to you. Lenny then writes lyrics about all the negative shit in the world.
6. What are your songs about? (What specific themes do they cover?)
They cover depression, anxiety, war and injustice. There’s a lot of bad in the world and this is how we deal with it.
7. Do you write your own songs? (Discuss the songwriting process in detail.)
We write our own music. Riffs or feelings is where they begin and once the music is set then we fit lyrics to the music.
8. What have you released so far and what can someone expect from your works?
We have released 5 albums that range from straight up New York hardcore to the most extreme metal we could write. It’s much more punishing as you get to our later works.
9. Do you have any new music in the works?
We just released an album “Mortualis” on Upstate Records. We’ve got a few more releases coming later this year to look out for.
10. How about playing shows and touring, have anything planned out?
We’re doing a lot of short runs at the moment all over the US but hope to get overseas in the next year or two as well.
11. What plans do you have for the future as a band?
Take it as far as we can and play the biggest shows we can. We just love playing.
