Barnsley band Hands Off Gretel has been invited to present a live music video showcase at Música Mundo 2017 (September 6 to 10th) an international music conference in Belo Horizonte, Brazil.
“It’s amazing that a group of students over 5,000 miles away have been working on our game and listening to our music. We have a fantastic international fan base and we are so proud that they chose Hands Off Gretel out of all the bands they could have chosen around the world.” Lauren Tate (Singer/songwriter Hands Off Gretel)

The bands video performance at the conference on September 9th will mark the launch of a free web browser game, developed by a group of Brazilian students, The Mad Freaks Studio at the University of Fumec in Brazil. The gaming students, who are avid fans of the band, were inspired by the music video "One Eyed Girl", a colorful carnival video that the band produced themselves. The students were inspired by characters from the video to create the online game, which includes music from Hands Off Gretel and has a string of anti-bullying messages.

The students and the band have worked collaboratively over the last few months to tweak the game and will now work together to promote each other through a dedicated Facebook page for the game and a showcase presentation at Music Mundo. Episodes 1 and 2 will be released at Música Mundo 2017, which is promoting interaction between music and games, fostering business innovation and entrepreneurship. The game will be available to play online on September 15th with further episodes planned for October and December. The game is designed to entertain, but also warn about bullying and its dangerous consequences.

Singer and songwriter Kimberly Freeman has announced her third solo album, Secret Lullaby, set for release on July 1, 2017. Perhaps best known as the guitar slinging front woman of rock band One-Eyed Doll, Freeman is exploring new sonic territories on Secret Lullaby, including progressive rock leaning tracks (“Rust,” “Cream and Sugar”), heavy piano ballads (“The Thief,” “Journey Of Art”), and even R&B-inspired beats (“Amnesia”, “The Missing Link”). Teaming up again with longtime producer and bandmate Jason Rufuss Sewell, the pair have created a magical and colorful collection of songs unlike anything they’ve released thus far.

Jason Rufuss Sewell says, “We spend a lot of time in the studio. In fact, it's our favorite place to be and sometimes we get very creative and make songs that just don't fit in the One-Eyed Doll rock drums and guitar vein. Over the last few years we've been crafting this Secret Lullaby concept and we're both really excited to let our fans hear what we get up to when we don't set any limitations or preconceived notions of what style of music we're ‘supposed’ to make, and just let our creativity flow. One-Eyed Doll is still going strong, and we have some big announcements coming. For now, we hope our fans will appreciate this very special album.”

To coincide with the announcement, Freeman has released a music video for the single “Rust,” which is featured on Secret Lullaby. Freeman explains of the track, “‘Rust’ is the tale of a ship who falls in love with her captain and hopes to keep him with her at sea forever. In his loneliness, the captain loses his mind and follows the sound of a siren, plunging the two to their tragic fate.” The imaginative music video for “Rust” can be seen here: https://youtu.be/avYGEuYFr7k.

Freeman ties her natural knack for storytelling into the album explaining, “I'm often inspired by other people's stories, and Secret Lullaby goes there a lot. Most of the songs aren't about me, and some of them aren't even told from the perspective of a human. Each song has its own special background, but here are a few examples:

‘The Missing Link’ is the true story of Oliver, the so-called, ‘Humanzee’ who was kidnapped from the jungle, exploited by his handlers and touted as the missing link between humans and chimps. He was eventually abandoned to an infamous animal testing lab for years, where he went blind. Eventually, he was rescued and taken in by a sanctuary called Primarily Primates in Texas, where he met his best friend and fellow ex-lab chimp Raisin. In this song, Oliver tells Raisin the story of his career as the Humanzee, his time spent in the lab and finally, his meeting of her. I was inspired to write this song after meeting Oliver and Raisin at the habitat. Oliver was a very sweet chimp, and so was Raisin. They were really cute together, like a little old couple.

‘Hoof Horn Tooth Claw’ is told from the perspective of a young pregnant pygmy goat who doesn't understand the changes that are occurring in her body. Jason, my producer and bandmate, had a goat farm when I met him, so this song reflects a little bit of that time and place in our history.

‘Lions and Lilies’ is a memorial to Jason's late grandmother who had a beautiful garden of lilies and lion sculptures. She was a brilliant woman, multilingual, owned a translation company and had her own cooking show on Telemundo. The only lyrics are, ‘leones y lirios,’ in tribute to her love of the Spanish Language.

‘Journey of Art’ is told by an old dog who was both blind and deaf. His owner, Art, was a kind man who loved him very much, but who's untreated Schizophrenia made him unintentionally neglectful of both his and the dog's health. However through the years, they were inseparable best friends. Very shortly after the dog died, so did Art.”

Unbeknownst to most, Freeman has a Secret Song Club that only a handful of die hard fans have been invited to join. A few of the songs featured on Secret Lullaby have been leaked there, and fans who pre-order the album will receive an invitation to the club and gain access to the several unreleased tracks, and receive instant access to the first single, “Rust.” Fans can pre-order Secret Lullaby at https://kimberlyfreeman.bandcamp.com/.

A duo act is quite something else but for One Eyed Doll it's nothing. This duo made up of Kimberly Freeman (vocalist/guitarist) and Jason Rufus Sewell A.K.A. Junior (drums), work together to create a style that is a little bit of everything; goth punk, horror punk, synth punk, experimental, and heavy metal quite the combo is it not? Well by combining all of these genres they have released an array of releases including their latest taking the concept approach called "Witches". When discussing this said release, Kimberly Freeman had this to say “This is a "concept" album and is based on historical research of the Salem Witch Hysteria."  Adding on that “Many of the lyrics are direct quotes from the original handwritten witch trial court documents. The songs explore different personal accounts from real people and touches on theories about why it happened. It's meant to be listened to in one sitting, from beginning to end, like a movie.”

While this concept is instated they did not just take use of these ideas with them during the writing and recording process, they took these pieces of works, to a place where the ambiance would fit the creative outpouring of the ideas that the members of the band were experiencing and expressing. “Even though this is probably our heaviest album yet, it was written almost completely on banjo and mandolin in the Redwood Forest near Santa Cruz, CA,” drummer “Junior” Sewell boasts. “It has this great "forest metal" vibe. It was also all written at once with several melodic themes that appear throughout the album. Though each of the songs stand alone, you can listen to it in one sitting and it feels like one long song like Pink Floyd "The Wall" or "Tommy" by The Who.”

When it comes down to it, this release is as the band says is heavy duty material like songs "Black In The Rye", "Witch Hunt", "Stillness",  and "The Ghosts Of Gallows Hill", really take all that's been said here and embraces it, allowing the music to travel throughout the release, from the start to the finish. The instrumentals for one, are catchy, very easy going and impressive, allowing the vocals to work along the top of it all, like floating if you will, as it all cycles together. The rest of the album aside from these songs, is pretty much the same ordeal, it's embrace and impressive, having the music and instruments working well together, that it makes it sound collective and creative more than it should.

One Eyed Doll have got a solid release here, and should stick to this formula more often because this one does work, and as said, it is quite impressive and very embrace to the listener hearing in on it all.

Goth punk rock duo One-Eyed Doll has done it all from being featured here or there to playing shows, going on tour, writing and recording music, to so much more there an act that can't be avoided. Frontwomen vocalist/guitarist Kimberly Freeman discusses about the band, side projects, new music, and much more!

1. Please tell us about the history of your band and its members.

Kimberly: I had a band called, "Ghetto Princess" back in 2005. At that time, Jason had a recording studio in Austin. He showed up to one of our performances and offered to record our first album, which ended up being "Hole". I lost all of my band members before the album was even finished (some of them before it we started) and decided to change the name and just start fresh. He made several more albums with me over the years as band members came and went, and we became great friends. I finally had the idea to ask him to be in the band, and he fell for it! :) Haha, and it's been amazing ever since! Wish I'd done it way sooner!

2. What made you want to be a duo type of band?

Kimberly: I kept losing band members and didn't want to cancel our booked shows, so my drummer at the time Scotty and I just played without them. We thought we'd just do that until the right bandmates came along, and I guess they never did. I don't think very many people were on board with my style. Everyone I auditioned wanted to change everything about my music. In the meantime, I wrote music that just Scotty and I could pull off and still sound pretty good. Simple, chunky riffs, really fun stuff.  In the early days, I was so scared to be up there without any other type of guitarist or bassist on stage, that I made cardboard cutouts, duct taped instruments to them and pretended that they were alive.

3. How did you guys come up with your band name? Is there an actual One-Eyed Doll?

Kimberly: It's a reference to my grandpa Bernie Jones, who had one eye. He was a great comedian, actor and musician all his life. I'm just trying to fill his big old clown shoes. :) There's also a little bit of a velveteen rabbit story behind it as a secondary meaning, and I reference the third eye a lot. It's a few things, but I think of Bernie as the main inspiration.

4. What lyrical theme do you guys use in your music? What message do you want to send?

Kimberly: There really isn't one. Writing has always been my emotional and intellectual outlet. As a kid, I wrote hundreds of poems and went to great lengths to hide them. They were my precious secrets, and I would've felt devastated and exposed if anyone had ever found them. Poetry was the only way to explain how I felt about the things that I couldn't talk to anyone about... even if I was only writing to myself. My writing has always been for me. It's the one thing that I do only for myself. I love that I can share it now with people who appreciate it, but I don't think I'm trying to tell them anything. I'm just doing what I've always done. I would like to say that it's been really amazing to share my songs, though.. and even more amazing that anyone wants to hear them. It's been a journey of healing.

5. How would you describe your style? Which bands influenced your music?

Kimberly: We sound like a squeaky toy being run over by a lawnmower. I think our influences are pretty wide, but they range from riot grrrl to Chinese pop, and a various places in between.

6. Tell me about the song "Committed" and why did you pick it as your single and video choice?

Kimberly: It's one of my oldest songs, kind of a piece of my personal history. I wrote it when I was 17 or 18, before I ever picked up a guitar. Committed has been way past due for a video, and I was just waiting for the right opportunity. It's an important song to me. I can't even remember playing a show without it!! It's possible that we've never left it out of a set.

7. This song seems to have taken a heavier direction, but it's only available as a single, will it be included on a future release?

Kimberly: It depends on some beeswax things pertaining to the album in the works right now, but we did originally plan for it to be on there. I'm hoping we'll be able to tell you all about that soon!

8. Do you guys have any new music in the works?

Kimberly: A poop load.

9. Do you have any other side projects happening?

Kimberly: Heck yeah! We're always making lots of different styles of music. Most of that comes out as, "Kimberly Freeman", since its not something we'd play at a One-Eyed Doll show. We've got possibly my favorite album yet coming out in that department.

10. How easy is it to keep the motivation going on a daily basis for One-Eyed Doll?

Kimberly: Jason is a great motivator. He's always sooo positive and confident and strong. I'm not nearly as strong as he is, and I have so much self-doubt sometimes. Jason inspires me to pick myself up and keep on moving. I don't know where I'd be without him. He's my hero!

11. What plans do you have for the future as a band?

Kimberly: We're going to be the first female president of the United States.

12. Is that your final answer?

Kimberly: Umm... yeah! I mean.. I think? NO?! I can't take this kind of pressure.. CATCH!

*throws cat bomb and runs away*

I'll get you for this, Natalie Perez! I WILL BE AVENGED!

*rides away on a hippo, the most dangerous animal*
