Melodic rockers CARBONWIRE have a debut album out, along with a new single out this summer! The plan for now, besides playing shows as they pop-up, is to release much more music, and of course world domination! See how the band discusses all of this right below.
1. Where did you get the idea for the band name, you planned it or came out just like that?
Kenny: Matt took the 2 dumbest sounding names and put them together.
Tanner: I joined Carbon Wire long after the band was created so that would be a question for Matt.
Matt: It was two words that sounded phonetically cool together - but looking back on it, it doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. Just phonetically satisfying.
2. Why did you want to play this genre?
Matt: It scratches a lot of musical itches. It’s challenging, but not overly so complicated that it’s all we’re thinking about onstage. Some of this new stuff is getting to that point though.
Seth: Because I grew up listening to rock and hardcore for it to make me a skilled drummer.
Tanner: I’ve always loved playing all kinds of music but especially when it comes to playing it with great friends like Matt, Kenny, and Seth.
3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?
Seth: I actually knew the others from the school musicians institute way before I joined the band.
Tanner: I’ve known these guys for years and have played with them when I first started going to school at Musicians Institute in 2018.
Matt: I knew Kenny and Tanner - I met Seth a few years after the band was formed, though.
Kenny: Yeah, we’ve all been in previous bands together, we mostly all met in music school.
4. Where is the band based out of and what is your music scene like there? Are there any local bands you could recommend?
Matt: We’re based out of Hollywood, CA! The music scene is really tight here - lots of collaboration and support from everyone. Against The Sun, Where It Lies, Breaking Serenity, Firing All Cylinders… to name a few.
Tanner: Carbonwire is based out of Hollywood and Hollywood is a huge music town. There are so many great bands and artists here such as The Vigils, RivetSkull, Firing All Cylinders, and so many more.
Kenny: We’re based out of Hollywood, California , there’s so many other great bands, Against the Sun, Firing all Cylinders, Fused by Defiance, Breaking Serenity, outside of great music is a greater community of amazing people.
5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?
Matt: Songs we hear and are like “We want to write something like that,” or some kind of creative input from somewhere… outside. It all has to come from somewhere.
Seth: Danny Carey from Tool, Eric Carr and Peter Criss from KISS, Richard Marx as himself, Bruce Dickinson from Iron Maiden, and last but not least, Yoshiki from X Japan.
Tanner: I’m not a big songwriter but when I do my life and experiences are what inspire my writing the most.
6. What are your songs about? (What specific themes do they cover?)
Seth: Our songs are about letting the bad past go and especially letting go of all drama, toxic people, and the bullshit to bring people into having fun from them to let go of what they’re going through.
Matt: I know I write a lot about what I’m going through in my head right now - it’s my way of solidifying what I’m feeling and processing it in a way. Giving it an identity so that I can look at it as a whole, rather than being stuck in it. Isolation, fear, existential dread.. All the internal stuff.
7. Do you write your own songs? (Discuss the songwriting process in detail.)
Matt: Yeah. Some of us have songs in our head, or ideas that need to come out. Usually I put together some sort of part - guitar/melody, etc and record it. Then the band will come in and add to it, and it becomes something bigger than any one of us. Everyone has a role in the process.
Kenny: We write all of our music, whenever a song idea is presented we all kinda pick apart the pieces and see what we can add without stepping on each other's toes harmonically.
Tanner: Like I said - I’m not really a songwriter but when I do I start out by writing poetry, then I find a guitar part that best fits the style, then add drums and bass to accompany it.
8. What have you released so far and what can someone expect from your works?
Matt: We’ve released one album - Amazing Disgrace. They can expect a heavy rock sound from that, but the new stuff is a lot closer to modern heavy metal. Super processed and everything. We wanted to try something different this time around.
Kenny: As of right now we have one full album released and our second album is in post production, all the songs are written and recorded and being mixed and mastered currently, what people can expect to hear, lots of guitar.
9. Do you have any new music in the works?
Matt: Yup. Our next single should be coming out sometime in late June - it’d be out a lot earlier if we weren't waiting 5-6 weeks for playlists to pick it up.
Tanner: We’ve been working on some more new songs that we think you guys will absolutely love.
10. How about playing shows and touring, have anything planned out?
Tanner: We just played two shows, both went great!
Matt: So far - releasing the album and playing shows, whatever that looks like. If the demand is outside of LA, then we’ll be there too. If that turns into a tour, we’ll be there in your city too.
Seth: Don’t know when, but I know our time of touring will be coming.
Kenny: We play pretty regularly, at least try to play a few shows a month, hopefully we start doing the whole touring thing soon.
11. What plans do you have for the future as a band?
Seth: In my opinion we’re gonna keep writing more songs and plan to keep growing as a band. And last but not least, plan a future tour.
Matt: Right now, creating the best possible music we can and playing that for as many people as possible. That’s always been the goal. Whether that’s five people or 5,000, as long as someone else is enjoying what we’re putting out.
Tanner: We plan on taking this band to the extreme. We want to play as much as we can and grow our fan base exponentially.
Kenny: World Domination!
12. Where can we listen to your band and where can we buy your stuff?
Tanner: You can hear our music on most major platforms such as Spotify and Apple Music. We also have a few music videos and live stream performances as well on YouTube.
Kenny: We have our first album on all platforms, Spotify, iTunes, Amazon and we have a website with all of our merch at Carbonwire.com but the best place to get our stuff is at our merch table at our shows. ;)
