Finland's own five piece melodic death metal act, Prayed and Betrayed has combined a unique style of music and context that has lead them to create their third release to date. Along with some line-up changes and other mishaps since forming, nothing can stop these guys for they have shows and touring and newer tunes all within their minds and hearts and even souls! The entire band got together to discuss this release and the future plans.

1. Introduce yourself, tell me what you do in Prayed and Betrayed, and how long the band has been together.

Our band was born in the summer of 2012 but this line has been locked down since spring 2014! The band mates are as follows; Antti Lukkari (Guitars), Panu Korhonen (Guitars), Samuli Paananen (Vocals), Otto Puusaari (Bass), and Juho Shuomi (Drums).

2. Tell us the brief history of your band.

Antti: Our band was formed in the summer of 2012. The first idea of a band like this emerged sometime in 2011 between Antti and Panu. The band went through a couple of line-up changes and the current line-up has been around since the spring of 2014. At the moment we have successfully managed to gather a group where everyone's motivation and talent are at the right level so we can fully operate as one.

3. Where is the band based out of and what is your music scene like there? Are there any local bands you could recommend?

Antti: Our band is based in Jyväskylä Finland. The metal scene here is pretty active and there are a lot of current bands. Pretty much all of your friends has some kind of band going on. Mostly some sort of metal genre. It's very nice considering arranging shows etc. It's quite easy to find bands to play with and because the scene is good there are a couple of good places where it isn't too hard to go and play. But some bands we would recommend would be Lost Society and Frosttide. Those are two great young bands rising from here right now.

4. What type of band are you?

Panu: We have lots of different elements in on music so defining it is not too easy. If you had to pick one genre it might be modern/melodic death metal. Especially our new record has lots of stuff going on. We have
fast brutal parts as well as melodic "hit-choruses". Complex drum stuff and groovy guitar riffs are also a big part.

5. Why did you want to name the band Prayed and Betrayed? What does it symbolize and represent for the band?

Panu: Actually our friend invented the band's name. It doesn't have such a huge meaning or anything. It fits with our bands lyrics which often refers to social issues, religion and stuff and it sounds cool.

6. Who are your musical and non-musical influences?

Antti: Well bands that we've been listening to and started the urge to start this band would be; Hypocrisy, Amon Amarth, COB, Kataklysm etc. Even though it seems to be bit of a cliche nowadays but you gotta say that everything you hear and see everyday can be somehow be influential to your writing process and the songs you create.

7. What are your songs about? (What specific themes do they cover?)

Panu: Usually they revolver around social issues/problems that humanity has these days, kind of looking like the days would be critical with how telling everything and everyone that's twisted that it's just our own faults.

8. Do you write your own songs? (Discuss the songwriting process in detail.)

Antti: Yes I am responsible for the material. The writing process usually starts when I get the basic idea and the mood for the song down. It might be a weird order to determine the mood of the song before having anything written down but yet that's how our songs are born and work. Then after the idea is sealed comes the very first riffs and the songs take off from there. Like for example on our latest record it felt right to do something a bit different and go for our slowest yet melodic and grunting song yet. That's how the title track was born. I usually write the whole thing down including every instrument then share it with the others when the whole thing is ready. But in the rehearsal phase the songs shape into their final form as everyone come sup with a little of this and that.

9. How does "The Abundance of a Sickened Mind" differ and compare to your previous releases? Why did you see fit to release another EP as opposed to a full-length release?

Antti: Well we actually don't ever like to talk about our earlier material hehe. We were completely unready when we made our first EP. Now the music is much more technical and the songs are written better and well thought out and everything is produced better. We basically consider the new EP our first real release and it's kind of a new start for the band. We have a new frontman with a better fitting voice to our music. Our first EP we were still kinda looking for what direction to go, it definitely didn't show our full potential as musicians. We took our time to make things right with this new release and everyone else along with it and are happy with it.

Panu: There are a coupe of reasons for another EP. At this point we are still looking for a label, we are convinced that this EP would be enough to make that impression. What we mean by that is that labels aren't going to go through bands with self-made full-length releases. They are asking for a couple of the best songs to prove yourselves plus other promo material like photos, live videos, etc. Money is obviously an issue but we want to be able to do good quality songs that cost us studio time and we picked 3 well produced songs that are hopefully enough to prove our potential.

10. Do you have any favorites off this EP? If so, which and why?

Panu: One of the points for doing a short EP was to not have any weak songs and we are happy with all 3 songs. Still we made "Deafblind" our single which has gotten the most attention. It is one of those fast kicking ass songs with a earworm chorus. And the title track is definitely a fun one, one of our slowest songs so far and even a little synth is in the background but still heavy as can be.

11. What should labels/zines/promoters know about your band? Why should they be interested in it?

Panu: First, they should hear our music and let it speak for itself. The latest release shows our variation and musical skills. Even though, we know there are a bunch of melodic death metal bands espiecally here in Northern Europe, we still claim to have the uniqueness and our own style within our music. Band wise we are extreme dedicated with this and at the moment we are strongly focused on promoting our band and getting to our goal and scoring a good deal and killer fan base!

12. Where can we listen to your band and where can we buy your stuff?

Antti: You can listen to us on Facebook, YouTube, and Spotify. And buy our stuff for from iTunes, Bandcamp, Google play, and Amazon, or you can contact us at prayedandbetrayed@gmail.com!

13. What plans do you have for the near future as a band?

Panu: Right now, we are promoting our EP as much as possible. We want to get the word our and reach new fans. Getting a decent deal is another target our number one right now when it comes to label searching. There's a couple of shows happening in the fall here in Finland too.

14. What is it you’d like a listener to remember the most when hearing your music for the first time?

Antti: Well hopefully the songs themselves will get the listener pumped and wanting to add them to his or her playlist. Hopefully our cool variation of elements within the songs will leave something ringing in their heard or ears if not both, that will make them want to hear it again and again and again!

15. Any final words of wisdom?

Antti & Panu: Check out our new EP "The Abundance of a Sickened Mind"! If you already have, we thank you! You will hear from us soon!

Melodic death metal band Exhumation from St. Petersburg, Russia have been doing their thing since 1997. Now years later come 2014 they are still playing shows, touring, and of course writing and recording along with releasing new material. They have recently been hard at work at their latest EP release "Bread Buttered on Both Sides". Guitarist Vasily Ovchinnicov and vocalist Irina Bardina talk of that EP and the plans they have surrounding it.

1. Can I get a backstory on the band/ band biography?

Vasily: Well, in a pair of words, Exhumation began in 1994, when our now former drummer Alex Kovalev and his two school friends decided to make a band. The band changed its lineup in 1997 and released the first demo “Wandering” in 1998. The record soon became popular among the RU metal underground and the band was actively gigging till 2001 when internal tensions lead the band to split. In 2008 Alex Kovalev and me decided that the time has come for Exumation to be “exhumed”.

 2. How did you guys come up with your band name?

Vasily: A funny story, in 1994 we were not pretending to be much too original, and the criteria for choosing a band's name was like: something horrible, something about death, something that scares, so at that time we were sure that “Exhumation” fits well. However we released our first record after the band with the same name form Thessaloniki we haven't even heard of.

3. Where is the band based out of and what is your music scene like there? Are there any local bands you could recommend?

Ira: Initially, the band is based out of St. Petersburg, Russia - the city of art, drugs and rock-n-roll and a home of thousands Russian bands. But most of us were not born here, lots of musicians come to this city every year to try luck - just like me – I was born in Siberia and moved to St.Pete to play metal and live a “rock-and-roll” life) There are tons of bands representing all possible genres and styles, singing, growling, squealing and playing all sorts of instruments, from electric guitar to sitar. If you want some good music stuff, you can check up Svartby, Stalwart, Free at least, Kenotaf, there are also lots of interesting bands in neighboring Moscow – like Seducer’s Embrace or Demons of the Guillotine, all these guys are also real good dudes.

4. What lyrical theme do you guys use in your music? What message do you want to send?

Ira: In our lyrics we appeal to the dark side of human nature, ‘cause we all got skeletons in a closet, you know, some of them are pretty big. We want people to think of things they've never thought of before; to ask questions they've never asked before.

5. What bands have influenced your band and its sound?

Vasily: Among others - Dissection, In Flames, Dark Tranquillity, At the Gates.

Ira: For me personally, well, I think Pantera, Children of Bodom, Slayer, may be Guns ‘n’ Roses and some other good old bands from the 80-th and 90-th; they definitely gave me some food for thoughts.

6. Is there any story or concept behind "Bread Buttered on Both Sides" title?

Ira: Well, yeah. Initially, we were looking for a title which would reflect the duality of our system, the backside of social order – and the backside of human personality, too. And then we suddenly came up with “bread buttered on both sides” – it was exactly what we needed, ‘cause it hints on the duality of welfare and, therefore, of the system we live in – the well-being of those, who are on the “upper side of the slice” is built on the blood of those, who are on the “lower side”; people on the “upper side” cannot see the backside of their welfare; people on the lower side cannot reach the top. That also gave us an idea for the cover-art.

7. Who produced "Bread Buttered on Both Sides" and what was it like working with them?

Ira: This EP is self-released, but the mixing and mastering were made on “Navahohut Studio” by Arkady Navaho, we've worked with them before and are very satisfied by the results of our collaboration.

Vasily: To my opinion, Arkady Navaho is the best metal producer in Russia, it is not the first time we’re working with him and besides of being highly professional, he is a very good person and a good friend.

8. Who did the cover art for "Bread Buttered on Both Sides" and how much input did you have on it?

Ira: As soon as we came up with the idea of the title, I also drew a sketch for the cover art – the hand of a “man in bandage” (who also appears on “Windwalker” and is a kind of Exhumation symbol) holding a slice of bread with the city on the upper side, rotten and bloody on the backside. But if something starts to rot on one side, it will soon be rotten all over, that’s just a matter of time, right? We only needed an artist who would be able to catch this idea and draw exactly what we wanted – and we've found one. The “breadcity” was drawn by Michail Larin (MosaEye), a brilliant artist who also drew the cover arts for many other Russian metal bands (see the links for some of his works: https://www.behance.net/mosaeye, http://mosaeye.deviantart.com/).

9. Why did you see an EP to be more fit than another full-length release?

Ira: Making a full-length is quite a long-term process, what we needed is a quick and bright release for the audience to get interested in our upcoming album. Due to the lineup changes inside the band the sound and manner have changed, we've become more aggressive, and we wanted to show what to expect from us this time – by the way, we've already got some absolutely new stuff for you guys to check up soon!

10. Do you have plans to release another full-length in terms of a follow-up or will it be another EP release?

Ira: Definitely a full-length, we’re planning to release a brand new one end 2014, currently we are into work at the new material.

11. What are your upcoming touring/show plans?

Ira: We’re planning to have some gigs here in Russia and also in Finland this fall, but not so many, our main purpose for now is to finish our work on the new stuff.

12. Where can we listen to your band and where can we buy your stuff?

Ira: Most of our albums, including the new EP are currently available in most online-stores, like TuneCore, Amazon or iTunes. For the official merch or CDs you can contact us directly by e-mail randy.1989@mail.ru or visit our official page http://vk.com/exhumationspb.

13. What is it you’d like a listener to remember the most when hearing your music for the first time?

Ira: First of all, we’d like them to remember us!) We wanna do something that was not done in the past, and we don’t want to be an-another-somebody. Some of the latest releases make you feel that you've already heard it all before, I hope we’re NOT that kind of dudes. We’re really into our music, so it’s always good to find people ready and willing to share our passion, we truly appreciate it.

14. What can the fans expect to see from you in the future?

Ira: I think, what our fans can expect is some good music! We also plan to shot an official video end 2014-beginning 2015, that’s gonna be awesome!

Vasily: More Exhumation, more gigs, the upcoming album and hell a lot of drive and passion!

15. Any final words of wisdom?

Ira: Wisdom? Well, what I know is, if you want to reach something –anything – better start right now, and never give yourself a fallback in case of failure - ‘cause if you do, you WILL fail. As Dime used to say - Getcha pull, dudes!

Vasily: Keep calm and listen to Bread Buttered on both Sides!

via his official Twitter account (@YoshikiOfficial) during a special Q&A session, where he will answer questions from fans using the hashtag #AskYoshiki.

YOSHIKI successfully completed “Yoshiki Classical World Tour Part I” after 13 shows in 10 countries in June, which was followed by a performance in front of 4,000 European fans at the 15th annual JAPAN EXPO in Paris. Yoshiki is scheduled to make an appearance and perform at OTAKON on August 9th
and 10th, an anime culture event happening in Maryland, featuring guest performers PATA and HEATH from X JAPAN.

Tickets for X JAPAN’s highly anticipated October 11th concert at Madison Square Garden were sold out as soon as they went on sale on August 1st. Since their debut at Rockefeller Center press conference in New York on August 24th 1992, X Japan’s explosive live show has captivated a worldwide audience. Everto Signum is highly inspired by Nature. The band was formed in the beginning of 2010. By now, they have a stable line-up that consists of 3 young and creative individuals: a vocalist, a guitarist and a drummer. By 2012 they recorded and released their debut album "Enneachotomy". Musically, that album is rooted in traditional black metal, having melodic leads, atmospheric interludes and natural sounds. The lyrics narrate about fusions and confrontations of the forces of Nature, creating parallels with negative human senses and impressions. Each of the 9 songs describes a landscape/scenery and a natural force acting as a main subject.

This year, they have arranged and recorded 4 new songs released as an EP under the name "Synergy." Its lyrics introduce the concepts of synergies between the elements of Nature. Musically, it is also based on traditional black metal riffs, incorporating lead melodies and progressive elements. They went ahead and released a video for one of the songs called "Stirred Ambiance" which can be heard HERE. This EP is out now and the artwork and tracklisting can be seen below.

TRACKLISTING:

 1. Cold Inception
 2. Stirred Ambiance
 3. Elemental Synergy
 4. Atrae Materiae Monumentum (Lux Ferre cover)

Chicago, Illinois THE ATLAS MOTH have always been a hard band to fully categorize simply because of the myriad of elements and influences that seamlessly amalgam together to create one of the more distinct sounds in the American heavy music scene today. Over the years through the band’s endless touring jaunts and putting out releases that display the band’s crushingly heavy yet beautiful take on their style of progressive crushing psychedelic metal, The Atlas Moth have made quite the name for themselves.
Now with their third full length album “The Old Believer”, under their belts they have something they can rely on to help create further material and even further touring and show playing for themselves for many more years to come. Guitarist and vocalist Stavros discussed this release and plans in-store for themselves.

1. First of all, who are you, and what do you do in the band?

Stavros: My name is Stavros, I play guitar and sing in the atlas moth.

2. Can you give those of us who aren't familiar with The Atlas Moth a brief history of the band and can you please describe your sound for those who have yet to hear your music?

Stavros: We started back in 2007 as just a way to write some songs. It was just me and our original drummer. Soon after, Dave and Alex joined and we recorded our first EP in December 2007 with Andrew. He wasn't a part of the band when we recorded the EP with him but by the end of the session we asked him to join. At the time and, for the most part, our first record were very much in the sludge category. I'd say we have progressed greatly since the original concept but we came from a sludge/doom background and that's still something we that comes through our sound no matter what.

3. The Atlas Moth does the name in anyway involve an actual moth?

Stavros: It's one of the world's largest moths. It initially came from a documentary called driver 23/the atlas moth. We wanted a name that didn't pigeonhole us into a certain genre.

4. What would you say are the bands biggest collective musical influences, and also individual ones that you feel can be heard in the record?

Stavros: I'd say between the 5 of us Deftones and Pink Floyd are our main influences collectively. Personally, on the new believer, I was listening to a lot of new wave when we wrote it. We always look towards band that do different things.

5. You have released two full lengths on Profound Lore Records. Are you happy with being a part of the label, and what are some of your favorite label mates?

Stavros: Profound lore is fantastic and they have taken great care of us now. We are also lucky to have a ton of friends that are on the label with us like Wolvhammer, Pallbearer, Agalloch, Loss. We are actually out with Subrosa right now who are just incredible.

6. Could you take us through the all bearer writing process of The Atlas Moth? How does one of your epic songs come to be?

Stavros: On this record, we would sit at Andrew's home studio and Dave, Andrew or I would record a riff or keyboard part or loop or whatever and we basically would trade off tracking over and rearranging the songs until we had a good idea. We all write our own parts. The band is a completely collaborative effort.

7. What does The Old Believer mean to you all?

Stavros: To me, it was a way of stepping away from the doom/post metal scene. We started this band with the idea of being able to sound however we want and not think that something isn't possible. We never want the constrains of a genre and this was my way of saying we stand on our own.

8. How does the album art relate to the music on the album?

Stavros: I think it shows the varying contrast of light and dark. Our music tends to have both of those elements happening at the same time.

9. Can you tell us how this album differs from the previous ones? What can we expect and what is the message behind it?

Stavros: This is the most personal record. I think we have become greater song writers and it shows. The record was something that helped me get through a particularly dark time of my life and my hopes are that it will help someone else out the way it helped me out.

10. How did you guys choose who you wanted to have as guest vocals on the new album?

Stavros: Purely timing. We always wanted all of our friends to be a part of something with us but it always comes down to who is available at the time.

11. Do you think there is an element of the band’s sound that you would like to push out further on the next batch of songs? With so much going on in your sound, obviously there are elements that might get further explored?

Stavros: Ya know, I never try to write a certain way. I just play what comes naturally. If it just doesn't flow, I put my guitar back down. I want it to feel as natural as possible. But with that said, I really enjoyed some of the more electronic elements and would love to try to incorporate more of that in the next record.

12. What does the band have planned for the rest of this year?

Stavros: Right now we are on tour with Boris and Subrosa and we have a Canadian tour in sept with some friends who I cannot say yet but it will be rad. We are also doing a west coast run in October which includes a stop at the Southwest Terror Fest with Goatsnake and Neurosis.

13. Anything else you want to say to the fans?

Stavros: Can't wait to see ya on the road.
