Agon Has Discussion About This Particular Musical Project of the Metal Kind!

AGON is a musical project out of Florida. Since forming, this project has thus far released an album, split, and couple of single's as well. More music is in the works currently, with another album likely to emerge soon enough. The person behind said project Andre Basora, goes into discussion about it.

1. Please tell us about the history of your band and its members.

Agon was created back in 2018 by me, Andre Basora, when I wanted to release some of the music I was writing at the time throughout the past months. I am still the sole and only member of the band in which I write, play, record, produce, and master all of the music myself. But, I would wish to bring in some band members to play shows and tour when this pandemic situation is over.

2. What’s the origin of the band’s name?

I found out about the word “agon” when I was trying to find a name for the band using the language of Black Speech because I am a huge fan of Lord of the Rings and Tolkien. As I was browsing through a list of words and phrases, I saw the word “agon” which stands for dawn in the Black Speech language. I liked it and thought it would fit well, so I chose it. Recently, I did some research and I found out that agon is an ancient Greek term that signifies struggle or a conflict. It could be used in many instances such as athletics, literature, or theater, but the use that best suited what I had in mind was the sociopolitical theory where agon can refer to the idea that the clash of opposing forces necessarily results in growth and progress.

3. Where is the band based out of and what is your music scene like there? Are there any local bands you could recommend?

The band is based out of Miami, Florida where the music scene is very far away from the field and genre of metal. The grand majority of music here is Latin pop, reggaeton, and EDM/club music, but there is a growing underground metal scene here in the city. Some local underground bands that help build the metal scene here are Amenorrhea, Choose Death, CRUD, Devalued, Gnosis, Gouge Away, Los Reyez Bong Death, Maedusa, Sapraemia, Shroud Eater, and Torche to name a few. I highly recommend them.

4. How would you describe your style?

My style for Agon is any type of extreme metal that I can fathom up with that can blend different elements and genres together. I like experimentation, psychedelic hints, orchestral elements, and anything out of the box to combine genres and fuse together sounds to create something uniquely Agon.

5. What have you released so far and what can someone expect from your works?

I have released so far a full length album, a split, a solidary single, and two singles for my upcoming EP that will come out in September. The debut album contained elements of atmospheric blackened doom metal with hints of psychedelia and avant-garde in there, as well as the split with fellow local blackened drone project Choose Death. The upcoming EP contains a complete change of sound as I made the songs a lot harder and punchier with an emphasis on death metal, sludge metal, punk, and grind elements to the songs. This also made the songs turn out a lot shorter being between two to four minutes in length compared to the debut album where the songs were seven to ten minutes long. I plan to have each of my releases and projects be unique in their sounds but still feel like it is Agon.

6. Do you have any new music in the works?

I have plans to release a second full length album and I have a majority of the music worked out and written for the album. As I stated in the previous question, this album will be a complete change in sound once again and it will contain elements that I have previously used as well as new elements and genres that I have had in mind. I plan to release it by next year.

7. How about playing shows and touring, have anything planned out?

I plan on playing shows in the future, but the only problem I face is finding band members to join and play my music for those live performances. So far the main plan I have is to release my EP, release some merch, and finish writing my second album. Due to the current pandemic at hand, touring and live shows won’t be in my mind for some time.

8. What plans do you have for the future as a band?

For the future of the band, I plan on creating more music under the name of Agon and go out to play shows around the world. I hope to grow as an artist and a musician throughout the years to make Agon be a household name in the metal underground scene as well as in music in general. A man can only dream, but with great perseverance can a dream become a reality.

9. Where can we listen to your band and where can we buy your stuff?

Everyone can go listen to my music on a grand majority of streaming platforms such as Spotify, Apple Music, Tidal, Deezer, Google Music, etc. Search up either Agon, Hollowed Lake, or Engraved Power to find my profiles and releases. The best platform to listen to my music, purchase merchandise, and greatly support me is through my Bandcamp where you can easily find me as Agonmusician. Here is the link to save the trouble: https://agonmusician.bandcamp.com/.

10. What is it you’d like a listener to remember the most when hearing your music for the first time?

I would like the listener to remember the instrumentation, the power, the atmosphere, the grandiosity, the theme of whichever release they decide to embark on. I want them to remember the feeling they got when listening to my music for the first time. If they keep on listening to my other releases and here the differences between each other, the unique qualities they have among each other, and the diversity that each release has, I would be completely happy and thankful for all of those who love my music and support it. I just really care about my music and its effects on me, and to whomever it resonates with, I thank them for liking my music and supporting my art.
