FYKE Stands Together When Awakened By These Questions

Emotionally driven act FYKE combines their sources of electronic, rock, and pop, to make music that has meaning to it. Off their music comes their latest single "Awaken", that comes off their newest album "Nightmares Deluxe". The whole band stood together to discuss the single, it's album, and just anything else that came to mind really.

1. What are your names and what do you do in the band?

ENIK: My name is Enik Lin. I am the lead vocalist, programmer, and producer of the band.

Mikee: I’m Mikee Fabella and I play bass and do back up vocals.

Steven: I’m Steven Delman and I play guitar.

Justin: My name is Justin Wright and I play guitar.

Gerard: My name is Gerard Christian and I play the drums.

2. How would you describe the music that you play and why did you pick said music genre?

ENIK: A mixture of electronic, rock, & pop blended with emotional imbalance.

Mikee: To me it can go under a lot of different categories. I would say pop and rock. I like a lot of different genres so being in a band that is really diverse makes it that much more fun.

Steven: Perfect mix of rock and electronic elements with strong pop melodies.

Gerard: I would describe our music as a mix of pop, electronic, and hardcore rock.

Justin: What they said.

3. Do you write your own songs and what topics do you tend to cover?

ENIK: We absolutely write all of our own songs. The goal of our band is to write songs that deal with current social issues such as racism, bullying, insecurity, mental issues, depression, suicide, etc. We want to spread awareness of these issues and convey a message of hope. Something that we feel that there is not enough of in music today.

MIKEE: Yes we do. Like Enik said, and we’re really grateful to have this sort of “platform” that we can use with our music to reach out to those who are dealing with these real life things they battle with on a day to day basis.

Justin: To expand on Enik’s and Mikee’s responses, we write about these issues because they are very real to us and we want people to know they are not alone. There is not much fiction in any of our songs. The stories they tell include many of our own personal struggles and we hope opening up our lives through these songs will have a positive impact to those who hear them.

4. Who are some of your influences and why?

MIKEE: Mine would have to be Underoath and Linkin Park! They literally changed the way I appreciated music and I’m forever grateful to them for doing that for me.

ENIK: I’m heavily inspired by my faith and life experiences. Musically, some of my influences are Max Martin, BT, The Prodigy, tons of 80’s electronic bands, a handful of Tooth & Nail bands, Linkin Park, Danny Elfman…. too many to name.

STEVEN: John Mayer is one of my biggest influences. He never stops learning and teaching everything he knows.  The 1975 is also one of my bigger influences along with Bring Me The Horizon.

Justin: My influences span from classic rock to current day rock. Some of my biggest influences include Led Zeppelin, Stone Temple Pilots, Guns N’ Roses, Jimmy Eat World, Acceptance, Circa Survive, Nothing More, and Bring Me the Horizon. These bands have inspired my guitar playing and I get a certain level of nostalgia when I hear their music.

Gerard: I’m a huge fan of EDM, so Porter Robinson is right up there because of his emotional music.  I also love Bring Me The Horizon.  Anything that gives me feels pretty much.

5. Where does a name like FYKE come from and does it have a meaning to it?

MIKEE: So FYKE is actually a really big fishnet. And we wanted to “catch” as many people as we can to spread love, positivity, and hope to people who feel like there isn’t any in this world.

6. Can you tell me about your latest single turned video for the track "Awake"?

MIKEE: It talks about the struggle but absolute love for music and making this our career. It’s about the sleepless nights, the stress, the friends we’ve lost on the way, the amount of times people have told me that you can’t make music your career. All those moments that might bring someone down have actually fueled me to keep on going. It’s about telling people that we don’t want to wake up from this “dream” of playing music. It’s really a tough pill for a lot of people to swallow (especially family members) to accept that this is what I want to do for the rest of my life. But to me, as soon as I see all the smiling faces at shows and all of the love our fans give us make this everything we do worth it.

7. Why did you think that a track like "Awake" was chosen as this single and video in the first place?

ENIK: One of our main goals in this band has always been to release tracks that we think are impactful. Each song that we have written has its own story and message. To not provide a visual solution to each of our tracks would be doing it injustice in our eyes. With the exception of the music videos for “Awake” and “Vices”, we shot and produced all of our other music videos ourselves with the help of our in-house video director Jae Yim.

8. Will there be any more tracks to come off your album "Nightmares Deluxe"?

ENIK: Everything that we were planning to release on our Nightmares Deluxe album has been released.

9. How would you describe your album "Nightmares Deluxe" as a whole?

MIKEE: I think that from the first track (Nightmares) I’d like people to look at it like the first chapter in any book. It may seem like it’s in a dark setting at first. But as you go through it all the way to the last song (FIN), I hope people can get a sense of this: Through any type of darkness in your life that you battled out of, you can actually use it help bring light to anyone else that may feel like there is no getting out of theirs. You can be that light to guide others out of their own nightmares.

GERARD: I would describe it as a salad bowl of emotions.  We cover a variety of sounds.  We are not leaning on one single sound.  I heard from people that they don’t get bored listening to it because of its variety.  As always though, I love the message behind it more than anything.

10. What other plans does the band have planned for this year?

MIKEE: We’re working on some things right now. So stay tuned!

STEVEN: New Music, music videos, and lots of shows.

GERARD: We plan and hope to spread as much of our message as we can to the world this year!
