The northern lords of symphonic melodic-death metal are back! 8 years since the release of their last album "Firefight", BLACKGUARD have released "By My Hand" (featuring Morgan Lander of Kittie), the first single for their upcoming album "Storm".

"This has a been a very long time coming, but we’re all elated to finally share with you our first single from 'Storm'. We have no shame in saying this album is by far our best/heaviest/fastest/bla bla bla, you’ve heard it all before, but sooner than later everyone is going to know why we feel this way. We’d like to send a huge thank you to Morgan Lander of Kittie for doing an amazing job on the chorus of this song, hopefully, she can make it out to a show or two to perform it with us."

Swedish melodic metal maestros SOILWORK will kick-off their world tour in North America – their first time headlining in this territory in almost three years. The 54-show trek through the U.S. and Canada will feature support from Jeff Loomis, Blackguard, The Browning, and Wretched.

“With [the new album] The Living Infinite nearing completion, all of us in SOILWORK are excited to announce the first of many killer tours to come!” states  drummer Dirk Verbeuren.  “We can’t wait to take some of our new songs to the stage and with two CDs worth of material, picking a set list is gonna be interesting to say the least… We look forward to once again bringing you metal the SOILWORK way!”

Canadian power metal band BLACKGUARD are proud to announce their return to Europe, supporting KAMELOT on their upcoming European tour beginning November 2nd in Eindhoven, Netherlands.

Vocalist Paul Zinay comments “We had a blast conquering North America with Kamelot and now it's time to conquer some new territories. We are very honored that we were asked to join them on this tour and we'd like to give our deepest thanks and gratitude to Thomas and all of the Kamelot crew for extending us this invitation. BLACKGUARD is hard at work on pre-production for their fourth album, STORM. Vocalist Paul Zinay releases an official statement on the band's progress.

"Hey everyone!

We are currently hard at work and pre-production is coming along very nice. Everyone here is ecstatic over the material we have. Our new guitarist Louis is a riff machine and working his ass off to help make this the best BLACKGUARD album to date. The writing process this time around is unlike anything we’ve done before.  In the past, one or two people would make up the vast majority of material for the album. This time, however, everyone is contributing ideas and music and the results are beyond my expectations.

We will be heading into studio in September to start tracking and we’re hoping to have the record out in early 2013. Lyrically, I’m taking a step into new territory by trying my hand at writing a concept album. This won’t be as intricate or vast as “The Emerald Sword saga” or “The Metal Opera”, but this will be an exciting and new challenge for me nonetheless.

That’s it for now. We’ll try to update everyone as often as possible. In the meantime, keep your eyes open for some exciting tour news that will be announced in the coming weeks.

OVERKILL have announced a brand new batch of dates aptly dubbed "KILLFEST 2." Supporting will be Belphegor, Aborted, Blackguard, System Divide and Diamond Plate.

The band is currently in the studio gearing up for their next un-titled release due out next year with a one off performance planned on the "70,000 Tons Of Metal Cruise."

Canadian titans Blackguard have been touring like no tomorrow, since the release of their latest works “Firefight”, the band find themselves igniting the flames ever so higher that this coming summer will be unlike any other. The guys took some time out of their heretic touring schedule to answer some questions about the groups' newest release, Firefight and what else is lined up for the remaining year.


1. You've done nothing but touring as of recent; how is this tour currently going?

Paul: We're on the road right now with Symphony X and Powerglove and it's going very well. It's a bit of a departure from the Deicide tour we did a few months ago; a little more tame and not as violent crowd wise unfortunately, but people are digging the new tunes we've been busting out for this run. This is our first tour playing Sarissas and Wastelands and it's interesting to see how people are reacting to these songs in a live setting.

2. How do you decide the first and last song that you will play?

Paul: We have a planned set list that doesn't really change much from night to night. We decided on starting with Firefight to give people a good boot to the face musically right off the bat, and since Sarissas and Wastelands are slower songs it adds a nice dynamic throughout the set. We've been ending with either Allegiance or This Rounds on Me from the Profugus Mortis album. It's sort of a coin flip each night over which one we end with but I like ending the set with some of our older songs since they're really upbeat and people seem to enjoy them.


3. You then have the summer off and will be hitting the road with Kamelot and Alestorm? What else is in store?

Paul: This summer we're going to be playing the Heavy MTL Festival in Montreal. This is going to easily be our biggest show to date so we're very excited about it. We've only done one other outdoor festival a few years ago but this one is far bigger in scale and has more of a European open air feel to it. I'm not sure what night we're playing but KISS is headlining one of the nights and I can't wait to see them play finally.
Right after the Kamelot run we'll be joining up with Evergrey and Sabaton for the tail end of their tour. The Absence and Powerglove are also on that tour which makes it all the more fun. We're having a blast with P.G on this tour and The Absence is also buds of ours.

4. Where haven't you guys been?

Paul: Too many places to count but we're working on that. This past year we were able to scratch Mexico, Germany and The UK off our list and there's more to come.

5. I was at your Deicide show in Hollywood and you did the 'Tornado of Death". Have you had that as your annual tradition? For those who don't know what that is, can you explain it?

Paul: No actually I just started doing that a few nights earlier on the tour but it's something I’ve wanted to try out for years.

The “Tornado of death” is essentially a hybrid “wall of death” and Circle pit. The Tornado starts as a circle pit and the designated time/signal everyone is suppose to run into the centre or “eye” of the “tornado” making for some violent pits. The nights we did it, it worked really well and I think we're the first to ever do something like that.

6. So you left two labels and are settling in with Victory Records, are they what you wanted in a label?

Paul: They are because they were the most dedicated and enthusiastic about building the band and putting real effort into bringing us to the next level. I'm not going to sit here and bash Sumerian or Nuclear Blast because they are amazing labels and have done incredible things for the bands on their respective rosters. Unfortunately they just weren’t the right fit for us at the time and their priorities elsewhere, but that's the business, not every band can be the priority all the time.


7. Your brand new album 'Firefight' is out. What are your thoughts on the album?

Paul: I think it's a great step forward for us musically. We wanted to make a meaner record and take a step out of the “folk” realm while still maintaining our love of classical and orchestral elements. I think we've done and great job and I’m even more excited about what we're going to do next.

8. What is a "firefight"?

Paul: Get a group of your friends together with as many Molotov cocktails as you can muster. Make two teams. Add alcohol, and watch the magic happen. (Add flaming arrows for added effect)

9. How did you guys come up with name Blackguard? What does it mean?

Paul: We were brainstorming names and I believe it was out bassist Etienne who brought up the name. The definition we found for it (among many others) was “a group of vagabonds travelling from town to town.....” For me that's a rather appropriate description of the touring lifestyle so I was all for it.

10. Do you want to say anything else to our readers?

Paul: I really want to thank everyone who's been supporting the band over the years and continues to do so. For those of you who have no idea who we are, come out to a show, have a beer and jump in the Tornado.

Ten years ago Montréal, Québec Canadians Blackguard came together and one year later released their debut "Profugus Mortis" (2009) via Nuclear Blast. Now two years have gone by and the band has swapped labels turning towards Victory Records to help them out with releasing the follow-up entitled "Firefight". There style has been classified as folk/melodic death metal meets power metal when compared to their previous release.

But in any case Blackguard’s sophomore release “Firefight” has kicked it up a whole lot more than what was presented on 2009’s "Profugus Mortis". The vocals for one are more in-depth stepping into a darker era in which they resemble a similarity to that of Alexi Laihio of Finnish metallers Children Of Bodom. The intro stands its ground with its battling drum beats with chorus ruckus of tough sounding men with clashes of crash of broken glass makes this album ignite with a powerful flame that unleash a fury of embers that enlightens the title track 'Firefight". Establishing their guitar metal leads with double-bass drums and chorus structure that lies in the backdrop connects this tune together quite well in the long-run.

"Wastelands", presents a more slowly in-depth approach yet still consists to be heavy and deep relating to a head-banging formula instead of the faster rapture that was used beforehand. Now "The Fear of All Flesh", is quite heavy having a building process that’s aggressive in every possible way, constant leads, breakdown choruses, impressive harmonies, raw vocal tactics it ignites the music leaving nothing behind.

Victory Records did the right thing when taking on the fiery blaze that is Blackguard. Their melodic yet thrash metal style with death metal attics is just the beginning of what will ignite into a flame so strong it will decrease into a pile of ashes seeking to resurrect again and again.

Who hasn’t heard let alone been to the world famous Whisky a Go Go? It’s home to its makers Motley Crue among others but though its known for  its heavy metal business just up the street is another venue dishing out the heavy metal goodness the Key Club. God Is Dead - To Hell with God Tour was just finishing up its rounds since its conclusion was drawing to a close later this week. This tour itself was delivering a course of various metal genres that would satisfy even the pickiest of metal heads. It offered Pathology, Neuraxis, Blackguard, Belphegor, and Deicide.

Now this line is quite the mix-up getting the night to a heavy start was Pathology who recently replaced their singer Matti Way, with vocalist Johathan Huber, (I Declare War), the band has seen better days and moved forward with continuing their love of performing and making music. Frontman Johathan Huber has taken his chances on this new role and has managed to pull it off quite well. Pathology’s heavy duty presents really builds up the crowd’s energy pulsing loud blaring guitars with fast rushing drum beats that keeps the music rotating non-stop.

PATHOLOGY:





Now Blackguard who’s been known to play alongside the power metal genre had stepped down from their normal routine and taken a chance a whole another crowd and the crowd ate them up spitting them right back out. These melodic death metallers portray a power metal style when it comes to their earlier works "So It Begins" (2007) and "Profugus Mortis" (2009) but their next release 'Firefight" (March 29) that consists of a much heavier style sense than this older rubbish. With that said, Blackguard has fast guitars with deep guttural growls that keeps the music in motion as such the band went on to do a “tornado of death” which is a combination of the “wall of death” with a “circle pit” so in other words just picture a tornado and then having it ripped down the middle then clashing together like a giant tidal wave, minus the water of course except fill it with rowdy metal heads ready to knock your block off.

BLACKGUARD:






So that leaves Belphegor and Deicide remaining. Now these two acts have engulfed themselves with the context of Satanism, witchcraft, bondage, hatred towards God you know the “typical” everyday material you’d come across in your daily route of life. Belphegor erupted the stage with their own material of hatred filling the crowd with chanting riots of “hails and horns” breaking into a mosh pit frenzy. Their ability on the other stage is very straight forward and legit having their music being played clear and through, that it possesses its own demonic entity.

BELPHEGOR:







Now was the time for Deicide a band who’s been around for 24 years will continue to cause such a ruckus God himself could not even risk trying to stop them. For Deicide worship another being they like to call Satan. Frontman Glen Benton who’s known for branding the upside down crucifix onto his forehead is quite good at his abilities of vocals and bass performance. The crowd on the other hand was aroused with anticipation at Glen’s appearance let alone his band mates as they broke out into a non-stop night of mosh pitting rapture that caused people to slip and slide every few seconds. Other fans jumped at the chance of surfing atop the crowd to get upon the stage while then being snatched up by the security guards and carried off the stage. Some were lucky enough to get away with that while some managed to leap for their life into the sea of people dressed in black.

DEICIDE:








The God Is Dead- To Hell With God Tour was quite the crowd pleaser gaining much approval from all in attendance.
