Color Out Expresses Creativity and Originality When Creating Music!

Solo rock project COLOR OUT was created by Dave Hedrick who comes from Nashville, TN. Color Out is heavily influenced by the early 2000's rock, and wants to expand upon the acts that came before, having a sound both unique and creative. Find out what Dave himself had to express about the music he creates.

1. Please tell us about the history of your band and its members.

It all started back in early 2015. I was living in Chicago and was in a band for about a year and we were getting ready to record an EP. When we started the writing process for the new EP, it was clear we were headed in different directions musically. I ultimately made the decision to step away and looked for an outlet to release some of the new songs I had written. I decided that I would start a solo project and this is how Color Out formed. In April 2015, I released the Color Out EP which to this day has the most popular song, “Mercurial”. This song also features the lead singer of The Dangerous Summer – AJ Perdomo. I was blown away with the response to the first EP. I honestly never imagined anyone outside of my family listening to these songs, and suddenly I had a small following. This validated what I was doing and motivated me to continue writing music.
Since 2015, I have released 3 EP's and will be releasing the 4th EP on 3/13/20. It’s been really cool to see this project grow and reach a global audience.

2. What’s the origin of the band’s name?

The name has somewhat of a dual meaning. I originally got it from a gambling term. “Color Out” is something you tell a dealer when you want to leave a table and consolidate your chips. I grew up taking gambling trips to Biloxi with my brother and friends so this had somewhat of a special meaning. The other meaning comes from living in Chicago for 5 years. Winters are long and snow is plentiful, so the name made perfect sense as there is very little color from November – April.

3. Where is the band based out of and what is your music scene like there? Are there any local bands you could recommend?

Currently based out of Nashville, TN. Nashville is obviously known for it’s country music roots, but the city and scene is changing and it is very accepting of all genres. What’s crazy about living here is that everyone is an amazing musician. I’ve been downtown and heard some of the best guitar players playing to an empty room on a Monday afternoon.

4. How would you describe your style?

I guess you could say my music is a mix of Pop/Punk and Emo. I really try to steer away from one specific genre and I think that is what has helped me find some success. It’s 100% rock, but there are elements that cross genres. It’s really all about the song and the emotions in that specific song. I have songs where I scream with heavy breakdowns and other songs that are strictly ballads with acoustic guitars & strings. I think a perfect example is on this upcoming EP. There is a song “With you” that is a completely different sound for Color Out, but it tells a different story and the music matches that story.

5. What have you released so far and what can someone expect from your works?

I have released three EP's and a couple singles over the past 5 years. I am really proud of the catalog I have released so far. I think there is something for everyone in these songs. If you listen through the songs, you will find the music to have a lot of energy and emotion. I really try to write relatable lyrics and I think that is what a lot of people connect with.

6. Do you have any new music in the works?

On 3/13/20, I will be releasing my 4th EP titled “Perspectives”. This EP has a lot of energy and there’s one song “Perspectives” that I think a lot of people will connect with. I think we have all had those nights out with a significant other or group of friends that we don’t want to end. This song is about those times, enjoying life and living in the moment.

7. How about playing shows and touring, have anything planned out?

As a solo project, touring presents several challenges. With that being said, it’s really cool to see people all over the world ask when you will be playing in their country. The ultimate goal is to hit the road and play these songs live across the world.

8. What plans do you have for the future as a band?

The future is bright for Color Out. As a songwriter, I am constantly working on my craft and trying to write better songs. I think I have taken a step forward on this new EP, but it is a never-ending journey. Music is everything to me, so I look forward to continuing to write and release new music.

9. Where can we listen to your band and where can we buy your stuff?

10. What is it you’d like a listener to remember the most when hearing your music for the first time?

Hopefully just the raw emotion in these songs. I hope the listener feels something and connects to the lyrics with something going on in their own life. Music has been there for me through the highs and lows, so hopefully my music can do the same for someone else.
