Scarlet Serenity Gets Together to Discuss EP, Touring, and More!

Scarlet Serenity is a three piece Rock band from Grande Prairie, Alberta. Fusing pop-punk with a love for metal Scarlet Serenity are quickly becoming a common name and the boys took some time to discuss their upcoming EP, the Real Sick tour and more!

1. Introduce yourself, tell me what you do in Scarlet Serenity, and how long the band has been together?

Joseph: I'm Joseph Lawless I play the guitar and sing for Scarlet Serenity, I began the vision of Scarlet Serenity when I was about 13.

Broden: I am Broden Eagles and I play bass in Scarlet Serenity. We formed less than a year ago.

Kyle: I'm Kyle Langdon and we've been kicking around for a year now as the real deal.

2. Can I get a backstory on the band/ band biography?

Joseph: Long story short, I some how convinced these guys to pretty much give up anything and everything in their lives to pursue this crazy little dream with me. I'm more thankful than words can explain and I love these guys.

Broden: I don't really think we have one, aside from like... When we all met. At first Joseph and I hated each other and now we're inseparable.

Kyle: As little hooligans in school I met Joseph and my mother wouldn't let me hangout with the kid but I knew there was something special. I met Broden through Joseph and here we are, blood brothers till the end.

3. Where is the band based out of and what is your music scene like there? Are there any local bands you could recommend?

Joseph: We're based out of Grande Prairie, Alberta. Alberta actually has a bumpin' music scene. Do yourself a favor and check out my boys in Arrival Of Autumn.

Broden: The music scene is a lot different than most places. There isn't much of it but you can always tell that it's there ya'know?

Kyle: From what I've seen with the local music scene, bands are more about being flashy elitists and worrying about other bands than creating art. I have no friends.

4. How did you guys come up with your band name?

Joseph: I was looking for something with almost a Guns N' Roses vibe to it. Simple, rolls off the tongue but also has some sort of positive and negative imagery because I don't care if you're Jesus fuckin Christ, everyone has two faces. [Laughs]

5. What bands have influenced your band and its sound?

Joseph: Guns N' Roses, Motley Crue and Fall Out Boy are my jam!

Broden: Avenged Sevenfold, Black Veil Brides, Escape the Fate.

Kyle: Personally I love Jack White, band influences would be Avenged Sevenfold, Guns N' Roses.

6. What lyrical theme do you guys use in your music? What message do you want to send?

Joseph: We're a band who looks forward to evolution, that being said our lyrics always vary depending on the song. If anything we just want people to know that there are people out there who are just as fucked up as you and together our voices will echo for eternity. I just want Scarlet Serenity to mean as much to someone else as it does to me.

Broden: Basically just do whatever the fuck you want and own up to the consequences of your actions.

Kyle: I want people to be comfortable in their own skin. Don't walk around like you own the world, walk around like you own the ground you walk on.

7. So what can you tell me about this new EP?

Joseph: Our EP is called 'Bad Jokes & Half Truths' and is set for release late June/Early July, 2015.
It's sexy, dirty, poppy and heavy.

Broden: It's the best damn record I've ever heard. [Laughs]

Kyle: Broden knows whats up!

8. Where are you recording the EP?

Joseph: We're self-producing it straight from our apartment to be honest. We really dig the old school raw DIY vibe.

Broden: There is no place like home baby.

Kyle: Our mother fucking home.

9. How is the vibe in the studio?

Joseph: Considering that we do it from home the vibe is always really chill and relaxed.

Broden: Very rock n roll. Booze, cigarettes, the lifestyle of making music. Music being everything and not really giving a shit about anyone's perspective on you.

Kyle: Every day it's different. There are days where it's chill, it's stressful, it feels like my utopia. My kinda place.

10. Where are you in the recording process of the new EP?

Joseph: I would say we're roughly 60% through production. We plan on doing a lot of rad things to promote it and can't wait!

11. Did the band have any definitive goals they were shooting for before the recording process began for this EP?

Joseph: Personally I was just tired of all these sub-genres and wannabes. I wanted something cool and exciting. Real genuine rock n roll. I'm tired of self-proclaimed "Rockstars" preaching about how this isn't cool or that isn't rock n roll enough. Just be yourself.

Broden: Not really, we just kinda went in, wrote what we thought sounded cool and went from there. Bad Jokes and Half Truths was the outcome.

Kyle: We just wanted to be the biggest damn band in the world, a rock n roll masterpiece.

12. Is there any story or concept behind the "Bad Jokes & Half Truths" title?

Joseph: It pokes fun at the amount of shit talkers and word twisters out there. There seems to always be 3 sides to the story and you never really know if to laugh or consider the truth.

Broden: If it's giving me attention I really don't give a shit, let's give em' something to talk about!

Kyle: It's about people judging you before they know what you're actually capable of. People can say what they want but until your actions prove what you're saying you don't really know who I am.

13. Who did the cover art for "Bad Jokes & Half Truths" and how much input did you have on it?

Joseph: My good friend Scott Cumming designed it. I've worked with Scott for years and I pitched him the vision I had for the artwork and to no surprise he brought it to life, and a fantastic job at that.

14. Are you using any new instrumentation you've never used in the recording process before?

Joseph: We've been experimenting with samples and stuff a little, it sounds sick.

Broden: I'm playing bass which is pretty cool coming from a guitarist background.

Kyle: I've never really played drums until one day I hopped on a kit and the boys were like "You can drum!" Can't say I've ever used a DAW but I've learned a fuck ton.

15. Did you feel any pressure whatsoever?

Joseph: Being our debut release it was nice in a way because there were no outside expectations or a reputation to live up to. This EP is pretty much a demo with some glitter and Jack Daniels mixed in, so getting our foot through the door might be some sort of pressure I guess.

Broden: A little bit at the start because I wasn't sure how it would all go down. It really impressed me and it's better than I had expected.

Kyle: Nah dude, I felt no pressure going into this EP. It came natural to all three of us.

16. When did you start writing for this EP?

Joseph: I began writing Bad Jokes & Half Truths in the summer of 2014 shortly after a breif taste of success almost made my head explode.

17. Can you select two songs from "Bad Jokes & Half Truths" and tell us what inspired the lyrics for them?

Joseph: 'Wretched Days' is a little bit out me being kinda troubled with myself. Different problems and choosing various ways to cope with those problems knowing it could lead to my destruction. It eventually comes full circle in a "You'll remember me" type way. My mind has always been a little hot and cold but it makes for great entertainment. We also have this rad opener to the EP that doesn't exactly have any lyrical content but it's really cool in almost a Tim Burton/American Horror Story vibe.

18. What can the fans see from you guys in the future?

Joseph: We're teaming up with Rise or Die Promotions as part of a compilation disk that will be distributed on select dates of the Real Sick tour co-headlined by Chelsea Grin and The Word Alive brought to you by Monster Energy. The tour kicks off on April 28th in St. Paul, MN and ends on May 23rd in Mexico City, MX.
