Articles by "Her Bright Skies"

Swedish rockers HER BRIGHT SKIES began way back in 2005, releasing their debut EP in 2007 called "Beside Quiet Waters". After a year had gone by the band would go on to release their debut album "A Sacrament; III City". This would lead to several more releases, including the sophomore album "Causing A Scene" in 2010 and follow-up "Rivals", with other EP's released in-between! After playing a handful of shows and touring all over the place, the band would break up, going on a hiatus of sorts somewhat. Coming back sometime year, to release a new single titled "Bored". Now the band has taken the time to catch up, since talking with us way back in 2012 and 2013. Find out what was said from the chat below!

1. Having provided coverage for Her Bright Skies since around 2011 through 2013, the band would cease to exist after that timing. So what happened to the band, did they break up, go on a hiatus, or a bit of both?

We didn’t really call it a break up but in many ways it was. All of us went on to do other things and although we kept in touch, no one was really creating music. At least not for HBS.

2. Two interviews were conducted one in 2012 with the follow-up in 2013, discussing previous content, touring, and what not, so has much changed since then, has the band's line-up gotten more or less, band member's changed or is everything the same as it was prior?

Everything is the same with the exception of Jonas returning as part of the band. He never really left, but didn’t tour with us anymore.

3. So tell me about your newest and only single titled "Bored", was the band that bored that they decided to come back and release said single?

No it’s not really about that. The song is purely about escapism, a recurring theme in our lyrics. We just kind of sat down and said we want to write more HBS stuff and then ‘Bored’ happened.

4. What and why did the band decide to come back, what was it that changed?

I guess we all missed writing songs together. That’s pretty much it really.

5. Besides the new single, does the band have anymore content that could lead to an upcoming release, whether that be an EP or album, or that hasn't been decided upon yet.

We are doing it song by song right now. Who know it might turn into an EP or album. We haven’t really thought that far ahead to be honest.

6. Will the band be re-issuing or re-releasing any of their previously released content, from the years way back when, to those who may have not gotten their hands on it?

You mean as physical CD's or vinyl? Maybe, that’s a long-shot though. Everything is way easier with digital isn’t it.

7. During the old content's era the band was signed with District 19 and then Panic and Action, so is the band still signed on with someone or are you taking the DIY approach?

We are entirely independent and plan to stay that way unless something insane comes along.

8. Why did the band go with naming themselves Her Bright Skies?

No idea. Can’t remember anymore. It was too long ago. We were just kids.

9. Way back when, you kept saying in both previous interviews, how you guys had like 50 songs for said albums, do you still have those songs still at hand that we might be able to hear?

They’re not really songs, just concepts. Might be a chorus and a verse, that’s it. Believe me you don’t want to hear some of it.

10. Does the band have anything in the works as far as shows and or touring?

Nothing at the moment. We’ll see if that’s something we want to do in the future. For now we’re just focusing on writing our music.

11. What about current plans, what does the band have in-store for the rest of this year that is 2020?

We have more songs on the way that’s for sure. But that’s about it!

12. Would you like to add or say anything more?

Thank you all for listening and hope you’ll like the song that comes out on May 1st.

Her Bright Skies last spoke to us when their previous album came out now sometime later their follow-up release entitled "Rivals" is out and guitarist and vocalist Petter "Pete" Nilsson took sometime over the holiday season to discuss this all new release.

1. Album three is out, how does this make you feel?

Petter: We're stoked for sure. It's our best album yet and we couldn't be more proud. It's the first album that we feel we've really found the sound we wanna go for.

2. So tell me how does "Rivals" differ from your last release?

Petter: It's more raw, rockier and it isn't afraid to be different. From the writing process to the mixing of the album it's all about being open-minded and not being afraid to include certain things that we otherwise maybe wouldn't have.

3. Are there any comparisons between the two?

Petter: We're still very focused on strong choruses and strong intros. that's what we're always aiming for. The other parts are secondary but of course important as well.

4. How would you describe the overall sound of the new album?

Petter: As I said before it's rockier and different from what other bands are doing right now I think. It's definitely heavier but in a way poppier than the previous albums. For some it may be a blast from the past, since we've brought in some old school rock n roll influences. Things we listened to while growing up and wanted to include on the album.

5. Did the band have any definitive goals they were shooting for before the recording process began for this album?

We wanted the songs to feel more alive. I guess that's what we always talked about. To let them breathe and sound less processed and more of a rock album.

6. Are you using any new instrumentation you've never used in the recording process before?

I think we have a banjo in there somewhere, but other than that, we tried to keep it simple. There are some synthesizers in there as well but this album is more guitar driven than anything we've ever done.

7. When did you start writing for this album?

We started in 2011 and wrote a whole bunch of songs. Out of like 50 songs we picked 11 that we really really liked and continued working on them. So it's been a long process but totally worth it in the end.

8. Did you feel any pressure to follow it up?

There were times when we felt we didn't have enough good songs but once we put our heads together we figured out ways to make the songs we had better and more interesting so there have ups and downs. And of course we were nervous about how people would react to the new approach, but now that it's released, we're happy with the response.

9. You released a video for the song "Lovekills" in it vocalist Jaybee wears a unique "Rivals" jacket did he design it himself?

Yeah he did. He just turned up one day with that jacket and he's pretty much been wearing it ever since, haha.

10. Can you tell me about the video for "Lovekills"?

We wanted to make a kind of un-serious video, where we'd joke about ourselves being "bad boys". In the end it wasn't that clear what our intentions were so now either people think we're bad mothatruckers or just douchebags. ;)

11. What does Her Bright Skies have planned for 2013?

Lots and lots of touring. That's pretty much all we have planned right now.

12. Wold you like to say or add anything?

Keep your eyes open for dates in your city. We'll be hitting a lot of different countries. Hope to see you on tour!

Jönköpings/Swedens finest have announced plans for the recording of the follow up to “Causing
A Scene” (2010).

In June the band will start tracking with Shep Goodman (Four Year Strong, Head Automatica,
Get Scared) in New York City.

“ After several months of working our asses off we’re finally in the process of narrowing down over
60 songs written. We can’t wait to start tracking and just have a great time in the States. This feel
like it’s going to be a big step forward from our last album“ Causing A Scene” and we’re really
proud and enthusiastic about how things are coming across and how the songs are sounding so
far. In a way we sort of went back to our roots this time and a lot of people may be surprised by
the new direction.”

The album is scheduled for a late fall release on PANIC & ACTION.

Sweden's pop punks Her Bright Skies have taken the use of genre labeling to a whole another level being called such genres as Emorock, emopop, popcore, postpop, poppunk, postcore, metalcore, and even popmetal? It tends to get a little crazy yet pretty confusing to say the least. Anyway these guys released an album two years ago titled "Causing a Scene", that has caused them to develop their own distrinct source of sound that has accompanied to their liking and appeal. The band went ahead and spoke to me while during their break period over the holiday season and told me what they have got planned for good old 2012.

1. Happy New Year! How is the New Year treating you and the rest of the band?

Happy New Year to you too! It's been good so far. Can't complain. We've just taken some time off and enjoyed the holidays.

2. "Causing A Scene" was released two years ago have you written anything new?

Yeah, we've written about 50 new songs actually. Now we're in the process of finishing them and fine tuning. It's sound amazing so far and we can't wait until we get to show them to the fans!

3. So your musical style is described as being a Nordic sound, while the musical language is American but since your from Sweden you perserve that Swedish accent quite well. How do you manage to do it?

Of course we are inspired by the bands that are from around here so it all comes pretty naturally when we write. In our opinion it gives us that little extra edge that is needed to compete with the big names!

4. Why did you not include "Ghosts Of The Attic" on your last album? Is it going to be just a single or included on a future release?

We wrote it a year after finishing up Causing A Scene but we still wanted to release it. We don't know if it'll be on a future album or not though.

5. You also made and released a video for this single tell me about that, where was it shot and how long did it take and was it fun?

It was shot at an airport just outside of our hometown. Freezing cold and it took a looong time but we had a lot of fun so it didn't matter. Doing music videos is definitely one of the best parts of playing music in my opinion.

6. Besides that video you have several other videos out "Little Miss Obvious", "Burn All The Small Towns" did you work with the same director? What do you think about thoses in comparsion to your latest works?

No it was a different director every time. Burn All The Small Towns was filmed in the northern parts of Sweden and Little Miss Obvious outside of Manchester in England. I definitely like Ghosts the most. We worked closely with the director and after a lot of hard work it came out just the way we wanted it to.

7. What about touring and shows have you done anything or plan to for this New Year?

We hope to able to tour the whole world in 2012. We've done a lot of tours so it's time to come back and see if the band has grown as we hope it has. Can't wait to get back on the road again!

8. Have you guys played any shows overseas or plan too?

We got some plans. Focus right now is on finishing this record but we've also been discussing different tours so it's definitely in the works.

9. What's the music scene like in Sweden, are there any bands you'd recommend?

There's a lot of great bands from here. Check out Adept, indevotion, Chemical Vocation and Intohimo. All very talented bands. Sweden has a lot to offer but i feel like it's fallen in the shadows lately. Look at the swedish history and we see amazing artists. So it's only a matter of time before we burst out into the world market once more.

10. What else can we expect from Her Bright Skies for 2012?

Music, videos, contests, shows. Anything we can think of, we try and do. So there's bound to be few surprises aswell.

11. Is that yor final answer?

Is that your final question?

Her Bright Skies is a band from Sweden and after forming in 2005, their career as musicians began to take flight. In 2007 they released their first EP "Besides Quiet Water" via Dirty Pretty Promotions and 2008 saw the release of their debut LP "A Sacrament, I'll City" that got them signed to District 19 Inc. Two years went by and Her Bright Skies has done it again with their sophomore LP "Causing a Scene" (2010) with all new label Panic & Action.

Her Bright Skies is a mix up of pop punk meets heavy metal by using the screaming formula every now and then on a selection of tracks whereas the pop punk side comes on more of the melody ballad stance. Like for instance "Hollywood Dreamin", aims towards the melody/ballad structure whilst "Sold Our Souls (To Rock & Roll)", maintains the heavier approach and appeal. "Little Miss Obvious", "Shake U", are others that can be included in the heavier side that is Her Bright Skies, while "Sing It!", "Kiss Like This", and "Pretty Things", fall back on the ballad melody feel. The lyrical content is strong and in-depth having lots of heart and soul that you can really tell how vocalist Johan Brolin is able to use his voice in a variety of ways being able to really put what he's feeling into the song makes it more emotional and up front.

Her Bright Skies has got it going on and is likely to draw in more attention that will further develop and expand as their career continues to grow ever so stronger.
