Dave Lombardo has debuted a third and final single from his forthcoming album, Rites of Percussion (May 5, Ipecac Recordings), with today’s arrival of “Inner Sanctum” and an accompanying Displaced/Replaced created video (https://youtu.be/IoDW7CCQBpQ).

Over the two previously released songs, “Journey of the Host” and “Separation from the Sacred,” Lombardo has further demonstrated why he’s considered one of the pre-eminent drummers of the modern era. Revolver noted of the forthcoming collection: “ it features a massive range of instruments: a large concert bass drum, a timpani, a grand piano, and an array of shakers, maracas, Chinese and symphonic gongs, Native American drums, congas, timbales, bongos, batás, wood blocks, djembes, ibos, darbukas, octobans, cajóns and cymbals.” Consequence said, describing “Separation from the Sacred”: “Here he strips down to a minimal tribal beat, mostly foregoing cymbals for the pitter-patter of the skins and intricate rim work with his sticks” and The Stranger speaking about the lead track, “Journey of the Host,” said the single “flaunts Lombardo’s underutilized funk chops and showcases his power and dexterity.”

Lombardo is one of the busiest musicians working right now. Never one to rest on his laurels, the drumming pioneer recently released new albums with Dead Cross, and Venamoris, recently performed with his other new band, Empire State Bastard (also featuring members of Biffy Clyro), and soon hits the road with Mr. Bungle, followed by dates with The Misfits.

Slayer have announced that Paul Bostaph has officially replaced drummer Dave Lombardo in the band.

“Slayer’s Tom Araya and Kerry King are very pleased to announce that Paul Bostaph has rejoined the band on a full-time basis,” say the band in an official statement. “Bostaph will be behind the drum kit beginning June 4 when Slayer kicks off the first leg of its 2013 international tour in Warsaw, Poland. Gary Holt will continue to fill in for fallen guitarist Jeff Hanneman.

“Slayer’s 2013 itinerary will have them playing 35 dates that will include headline shows as well as a number of major summer festivals in Europe, Eastern Europe and South America between June and October. The complete itinerary is below.

“Paul’s a great drummer and a good friend, and we’re very happy that he’s decided to rejoin the band,” said Tom Araya. “We’re still pretty numb from the loss of Jeff, but we don’t want to disappoint our European fans, and we need to begin moving forward…having Paul back in the band makes that a whole lot easier.”

“I’m very excited to be rejoining Slayer,” adds Bostaph. “We spent a very intense ten years of our lives together, had a lot of fun, made a lot of great music, so for me, this feels like coming home.”

Bostaph was Slayer’s drummer from 1992 until 2001 and worked on the following four albums: Divine Intervention (1994), Undisputed Attitude, Diabolus in Musica, (1998) and God Hates us All (2001). Bostaph has also played with Forbidden, Exodus, Systematic and Testament.

The news will perhaps come as a shock to fans hoping that Lombardo would make a return to the fold despite his sacking from the Australian tour earlier this year. Lombardo made an appearance at the public memorial of former bandmate and Slayer guitarist Jeff Hanneman, who passed away on May 2.

Drummer Dave Lombardo, best known for his work with thrash metallers Slayer, took time out of his schedule of interview arrangements to talk to me during our phone conversation about his oddest fan experience, upcoming plans and the latest buzz on the band's newest release.


1. What can be said that hasn't been said about World Painted Blood?

Dave: What can be said that has been said about the new album? Ya know just about everything, maybe only 98-99% of it is really good while the other 1- 2% has your occasional has the points on what our whole goal was when making this album.

2. Have any remaining plans for this year leading into next year?

Dave: Just constant touring, get out there and play for the kids and have a good time.

3. Will we be seeing another chapter in the Unholy Alliance Tour - I saw you guys for my first time on the first round in 2006.

Dave: I’m sure there will be, those doors have never been closed but absolutely look forward to that when it arises.

4. Do you get ever tired or annoyed by Journalists?

Dave: *Laughs* Yes I do, but I’ve had my share of moments.

5. What would you like a listener to remember the most after hearing "World Painted Blood" all the way through for the first time?

Dave: The drums of course.

6. Come 2011 you'll have been a band for about 30 years, how does that make you feel, plan to celebrate in anyway?

Dave: No actually - no I’m not one to celebrate those types of things when they come around. Our management keeps track of those types of things, not me.

7. If you had to run into yourself as a child and tell yourself what you're in store for what would you say?

Dave: My Ex-Wife she is insane.

8. What has been one fan encounter that you will never forget?

Dave: This one fan got his foot bit off by a shark. That was the oddest experience; I of course signed his foot.

9. How did the signing go in Hollywood?

Dave: It was great.

10. Anything else you'd like to add?

Dave: Nope pretty much got it all covered.
