Swedish melodic death metal pioneers At The Gates have announced the release of their new album, The Ghost of a Future Dead -- out on April 24th 2026 via Century Media Records.

The follow-up to 2021's wildly adventurous The Nightmare of Being, this upcoming release marks a special tribute to frontman Tomas Lindberg, who tragically passed away in September 2025.

The Ghost of a Future Dead was recorded and mixed by Jens Bogren at Fascination Street Studios in Örebro, Sweden, comes with artwork created by Robert Samsonowitz / www.rbrt.org.

At The Gates checked in with the following comment about The Ghost of a Future Dead:

"We are proud to finally share some news about our eighth studio album, 'The Ghost of a Future Dead'. The album will be released on April 24, 2026 - more than two years after it was completed in the studio.

"As you all know, Tomas Lindberg passed away last year due to complications from his cancer treatment. Over the past few years, we worked closely with Tomas, discussing and refining every detail to ensure nothing was left to chance.

"In accordance with Tomas' wishes - including the album title, sound mix, track order, artwork, and overall presentation – 'The Ghost of a Future Dead' remains true to form. It combines the ferocious energy and hard-hitting powerful melodies that is the essence of At The Gates. This album is Tomas' legacy".

The album's powerful opening song "The Fever Mask" is being launched as a single today and comes with a heartfelt in memory tribute video to Tomas Lindberg assembled by longtime collaborator Patric Ullaeus / https://www.revolver.se, which can be now seen here: https://youtu.be/EEpFYm-S8qk

At The Gates have released a new song called "A Stare Bound In Stone" in a video-clip created by Costin Chioreanu / Twilight 13 Media.

AT THE GATES frontman Tomas Lindberg comments on the track as follows: "For the second single release of the album we wanted this menacing stormer, fast aggressive verses, heavy chorus and an evil mantra of an ending. This, for me, depicts the desperate, urgent mood of the record. I think it could be one of the most aggressive songs we have ever written. This album is so diverse, and includes so much different elements that it is hard to boil down those essences to just one song. This song has a lot of them though, more to come soon. For the video-shoot we wanted to work with Costin on this one, as he is an essential part of this record. We felt that he knew exactly what kind of emotions we wanted to get across, and how to capture them artistically. I see this video as a brilliant complement to the song. Enjoy!"

Swedish melodic death metal pioneers AT THE GATES are launching the first single from their much anticipated new album, "To Drink From The Night Itself", by debuting the music video for the upcoming album’s title track!

AT THE GATES frontman Tomas Lindberg checked in to comment about the track as follows: "So, for the first song to present to the public, we chose the title track of the album. Which is also the opening track of the record. To us, this gives a presentation of the attitude of the album: raw, hungry and desperate. It also gives an introduction to the whole concept of the record. We live through our art, and the whole album deals with the concept of art. Art as a tool either for revolution, or suppression. To drink from the night itself is just that, a metaphor for living and breathing through art. Of course the concept goes deeper than that, but this song is the heart of the concept, the fierce call to arms so to say. We are still at war, but this time we are fighting the abyss, the abyss of apathy and oppression. It is an aggressive song, but also contains a lot of the other elements of the band´s sound on this record. Melancholia, desperation and struggle. For the first video we chose to use Patric Ullaeus again, as he is good at capturing the raw energy of the band playing live. In the video you can also see glimpses of the art used for the cover, so it binds it all together nicely. Enjoy."

Swedish melodic death metal pioneers At The Gates have just completed the recording process of their upcoming studio album with producer Russ Russell (Napalm Death, The Haunted, Dimmu Borgir, etc.) at Parlour Studios in the UK. The album will be entitled “To Drink From The Night Itself” and follows up 2014’s acclaimed comeback release “At War With Reality”. The worldwide release date will be May 18, 2018 via Century Media Records.

Vocalist Tomas Lindberg checked in with the following comments: "We have wrapped up the recordings of the new record, and we are super psyched! It has been a smooth process, and very creatively fullfilling. All people that we have worked with on this project have stepped up to our vision of the final product, and we are very excited about the result.

As you might have seen, we have worked with Russ Russel on this one, and he is really a master of getting the most intense takes out of us, and also has an ear for the rawness that we were after for this one. The vocals were recorded with Per Stålberg here in Gothenburg, and he always makes me deliver to a 100%. Right now we are getting the mastering done, and every new song that is bounced to us produces huge grins on our faces. This album sounds hungry and mean.

The title of our new record will be "To Drink From The Night Itself", and it is, again a conceptual record. More details about the concept will be revealed once the album is more on its way. But it connects with the deep roots of the band, and has connections with some of the themes on "The Red In The Sky Is Ours".  2018, we are ready, let´s do this!"

The Decibel Magazine Tour has established itself as the extreme music destination of the spring, bringing metalheads a thoughtfully curated lineup that celebrates the genre's proud and diverse global legacy. The fourth installment is no different, as Swedish melodeath legends AT THE GATES join forces with U.S. hardcore heroes CONVERGE and U.K. death/doom supergroup VALLENFYRE, with yet one more very special opener to be announced this December.

"Super-stoked at finally getting to be part of the Decibel tour!"enthuses AT THE GATES frontman Tomas Lindberg. "A great mag, with great people behind it! And finally being able to rip out new stuff in front of a U.S. club audience? Sweet! The bill looks amazing, too! The most relevant hardcore band on the planet and the fiercest old-school death metal band on the same night as us? Excited!"

Four-time Decibel cover stars CONVERGE continue to not just push, but outright obliterate the boundaries of extreme music, most recently with 2012's All We Love We Leave Behind. "We are excited to be part of this fantastic and diverse tour," says frontman Jacob Bannon, who designed the tour logo and art. "For me, AT THE GATES are one of the most important bands in contemporary heavy music. It will be an honor to tour the country with them."

Boasting present and past members of PARADISE LOST, MY DYING BRIDE and AT THE GATES, old-school death-dealing supergroup VALLENFYRE can't wait to debut songs from 2014's critically acclaimed sophomore stunner, Splinters. "This will be VALLENFYRE's first U.S. tour, and what a tour," beams frontman Gregor Mackintosh. "I think this is the most diverse and exciting bill of any metal tour I have seen this year. Great to be a part of it. We will be injecting some British filth into your unsuspecting American ears. Cheers."

We know you can't wait to GO to war with this lineup either, so here's your chance to score a great deal and avoid standing in line. There will be a number of VIP premium packages available in each market, providing you with a limited edition T-shirt, 18 x 24 tour poster, "Skip the Line" pass, exclusive digital tour issue of Decibel Magazine, a coupon for 15% off a purchase on Indie Merch's webstore, and free digital sampler from Century Media. Seminal Swedish metallers AT THE GATES are back! Following the heat of an ample and highly praised live-reunion, the pioneers of the "Gothenburg style" melodic death metal sound have announced that they are working on a comeback studio album with the classic line-up of their latest masterpiece effort from 1995, Slaughter Of The Soul, expected to be released worldwide by the end of 2014 via their new label partner Century Media Records.

AT THE GATES checked in with the following comment statement:

"So, here we are almost 24 years since the birth of AT THE GATES, and some 18+ years since our latest album 'Slaughter Of The Soul'. A lot of years have passed and we have embarked on some life-changing reunion tours and shows the last couple of years.

So, why make a new album you might ask, and why now? Well, what we learned from the last couple of years hanging out and playing shows together, is that we enjoy what we do to the fullest extent. We love playing music together, and we love to hang out as friends. But, as a musician, we constantly write new music. It's a huge part of our identities.

We are fully aware that we have made some very drastic statements in interviews as well as the closing words on the DVD about the longevity of AT THE GATES, but things change, situations change and people change. When Anders sent the first song last summer, we had zero expectations of the outcome. We only knew one thing - That it sounded amazing! At the time we weren't even sure there would be an album, but as things progressed, more songs came into existence, and we knew we were on to something great.

We know you are all curious about the new material, and to make a simple explanation of where we are at musically, we would describe it as a perfect mix between early AT THE GATES & 'Slaughter of the Soul'-era AT THE GATES, trying to maintain the legacy and the history.

We chose Century Media as a worldwide partner for the upcoming album. We have all been friends for years with people at the label. Jonas & Anders have a history with THE HAUNTED there (as well as Adrian with PARADISE LOST).

So, we hope to bring you updates about the progress of the new album soon. The plan is to record the album in June/July with a tentative release in October / November of 2014 on Century Media Records."

-AT THE GATES

Century Media Records added: "We are extremely proud and super excited to have teamed up with one of the most legendary and influential bands in metal. AT THE GATES have not only been a staff favourite since their very inception, but also a group of members that we individually like, respect and are always glad to support. As the reunion shows of the recent years have demonstrated, AT THE GATES are currently on top of their game and more relevant than ever before within and for the metal scene of these days. We truly look forward to pushing AT THE GATES to new heights with their new album 'At War With Reality'. Let's...GO!!!"
