VAIDMA Discussed New Album, Lyrical Context, Show Plans and More!

Slam heavy deathcore band VAIDMA discussed their debut album "Your Truth", inspiration, what their songs are lyrical all about, all new music, and plans to go out playing shows everywhere sooner or later. Find out all about it below.

1. Where did you get the idea for the band name, you planned it or did it come out just like that?

The name Vaidma comes from Vedma, which means “witch” in Russian. Originally, it was the name of a thall-based band with alternative themes, which is now called Illumirra. They’re very close friends of ours, since Barry, the guitarist of Vaidma, also plays in that project, which is based out of Japan. When I joined Vaidma, I was supposed to be a backup vocalist, but I started experimenting with different vocal styles. They liked what I contributed, and since my approach leaned toward darker and slammier themes, the overall style of Vaidma shifted in that direction.

2. Why did you want to play this genre?

It was mostly because Barry and I shared a passion for My Space era themed deathcore and death metal, so we wanted to bring that sound back. We’re aiming to capture the rawness of deathcore—the kind that feels like it was created in a lab—but present it in a way that’s fresh and reinvented.

3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?

Barry and I first met as neighbors. We used to play guitar and make music right next door to each other without even realizing it. One day, I added him on Instagram and complimented his guitar playing, and that’s when we discovered we’d been neighbors all along. It felt like fate. Barry then introduced me to Nevsky Schema, and from there we recruited several people—some fit, some didn’t. Eventually, we found our drummer, Aidan, and were finally able to move away from using drum backing tracks, which completely transformed our sound.

4. Where is the band based out of and what is your music scene like there? Are there any local bands you could recommend?

Vaidma is based out of San Diego, CA, a city with a thriving and diverse metal scene. It’s packed with talent and includes everything from heavy metal and metalcore to mathcore, slamming death metal, and deathcore. The scene is massive and competitive, which makes it tough to break through since everyone is so passionate about it. Along the way, we’ve made some great friends, but we’ve also encountered jealousy. We choose not to associate with artists who aren’t willing to support each other in working toward a common goal. Bands we’d recommend checking out would be Illumirra and subjugator also void ceremony which is Aidan’s other project he plays drums for them and Barry plays guitar for subjugator.

5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?

Our songs usually start with Barry, who writes the instrumentals, and we build from his guitar playing. From there, we layer in Aidan’s drumming style and technique. I handle all the lyrics, though I’ll sometimes get feedback from Barry to make sure the words match the instrumentals—and vice versa, I’ll suggest ways to make the riffs darker and more brutal.

My lyrics are heavily inspired by my past. I grew up with absentee parents and endured various forms of abuse, which made childhood incredibly difficult. I tried to stay positive, but most of the time it felt hopeless, and suicide was a constant temptation since I had no one to pull me out of the darkness. Over time, I had to confront my own victim mentality and recognize how it shaped me so that I could break free and not let circumstance define me.

I’ve survived a lot, and I channel those experiences into my music with the goal of using them for something greater. I still struggle with depression and PTSD, but instead of letting it consume me, I put it into my lyrics to show others that, no matter how dark things get, everything will be okay.

6. What are your songs about?

Our songs each carry a personal theme. Shackled by Fear is about living with anxiety and the constant battle against it. Your Truth focuses on absentee parents and the regret that comes with those broken relationships. If You Leave, I’ll Die was inspired by the time I rescued my ex-girlfriend from a suicide attempt while she was struggling with drug use and depression. Each track reflects real experiences and emotions, turning them into something others can connect with.

8. What have you released so far and what can someone expect from your works?

We released our debut album, Your Truth, and you can expect more music from us in the near future—each release carrying new stories and experiences to draw from. We’re always channeling our negative energy into our instruments to create crushing, slam-heavy deathcore and bring it to light.

9. Do you have any new music in the works?

You have no idea, it’s going to be a awesome year in 2026!

10. How about playing shows and touring, have anything planned out?

Playing shows we intend on expanding through California and when we get the time off work expand to Texas and Arizona area.

11. What plans do you have for the future as a band?

We intend on playing shows promoting our new album and simultaneously making sure to write and record any ideas we have for future material.

12. Where can we listen to your band and where can we buy your stuff?

You can listen to Vaidma on all streaming platforms also we have a sight on apple square that has Vaidma merch for sale.
