Pop punks FIX ME UP are currently hard at work upon what is their debut album! Some single's have already been released, with plans for a tour set around the new album, shows coming up beforehand, and the band just releasing more music! The band talks about their releases, new album, plans for the future and much else below.
1. Where did you get the idea for the band name, you planned it or did it come out just like that?
From the get-go, we knew we wanted a name that was both catchy and powerful. We spent weeks brainstorming, but it felt like hitting a brick wall. Living on the border in Tijuana, we're surrounded by American slang and lingo. One day, I overheard someone say 'fix me up,' which roughly translates to 'help me out' or 'give me a hand.' It struck a chord, especially with phrases like 'can I get my fix?' We connected the dots and realized it fit our band's vibe perfectly – we're all about providing an escape and support through music.
2. Why did you want to play this genre?
Pop-punk, punk rock, and its derivatives, as well as alternative music, have always been a huge influence in our lives. As a result, the genre felt like a natural fit for us, and we feel incredibly comfortable with it.
3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?
Yes, Julio and Mandys, our guitarists, were previously part of the band Nova Il. When Julio left Nova Il to focus on his project Foncal, Hugo joined as the bassist and brought along his friend Yovani. As both Foncal and Nova Il went on hiatus, we knew we wanted to keep creating music and performing live together. That's when Fix Me Up was born – a new chapter in our musical journey.
4. Where is the band based out of and what is your music scene like there? Are there any local bands you could recommend?
Being a band from Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico, we've experienced a mixed bag of reactions from the local scene. While some people seem apathetic, there's a small but passionate group of supporters who have been incredibly welcoming and enthusiastic about our new project. We're deeply grateful for their support – it means the world to us.
5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?
I believe that the main inspiration for writing our material comes from learning through various experiences, ranging from setbacks and adversities to joyful moments. From each of these, we learn to navigate life and fight with enthusiasm and positivity.
6. What are your songs about? (What specific themes do they cover?)
Our lyrics explore themes of resilience and growth, delving into the complexities of relationships, both personal and social. We write about the struggles and triumphs, the setbacks and victories, and the importance of holding onto values like empathy, kindness, and perseverance. Ultimately, our songs are about learning to navigate life's challenges and striving to be the best version of ourselves.
7. Do you write your own songs? (Discuss the songwriting process in detail.)
All of our music is composed and written by us, and our creative process is very dynamic. It typically starts with a musical composition proposal from Julio (our guitarist), and then the rest of us contribute musically – Hugo on drums, and Yovani and Mandys on bass and guitar. Mandys takes the lead on writing the lyrics for our material, bringing our songs to life with meaningful words and stories.
8. What have you released so far and what can someone expect from your works?
We're currently hard at work recording our debut album, titled 'Aunque No Esté Completo' (Even If I'm Not Whole). We've already released three singles: 'Treinta Once', 'Sin Ganas de Frenar', and 'Simp', along with the official music video for 'Treinta Once'. You can find all our music on YouTube and various digital music platforms.
9. Do you have any new music in the works?
We're working on our record, gradually releasing new music that will ultimately come together to form our debut album.
10. How about playing shows and touring, have anything planned out?
We have upcoming shows confirmed in our city for the next few months, and we're working on confirming two dates outside of the city. Our plan is to tour after the album's release.
11. What plans do you have for the future as a band?
Our plan is to continue working on our music, release more videos, grow our online presence, drop new singles, and perform at various shows and cities. We're excited to take our music to the next level and share it with a wider audience.
12. Where can we listen to your band and where can we buy your stuff?
You can follow us on any social media platform, but Instagram is where we're most active – find us at @fixmeup_band! And don't miss out on our music – it's available on all major digital platforms.
