Synth wave, rock band ECLECTOTRON says they are bound to no genre, but they have an idea of how they sound. With this they have gone on to release a couple of EPs, with a debut full-length album out soon! Some shows are set for play along with much more music as well. The band discusses with us their releases, plans, and more below.
1. Where did you get the idea for the band name, you planned it or came out just like that
The name “Eclectotron” came from the original idea behind the band- an eclectic mix of genres with the through line of electronic music elements in each song (Eclectic-Electronic). Things have definitely become a little bit more consistently synth-rock since the band's first year or two, but we still draw inspiration from new age, rock, dance, and metal genres.
2. Why did you want to play this genre?
The band was actually inspired by the announcement of Neotropolis, the immersive cyberpunk festival in the Mojave, but was also greatly spurred by synthwave, synth rock and synth funk bands of the 2010s. It just looked like too much fun not to try our own hand at it!
3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?
The band members were all slowly roped into their roles by band founder Reece Miller, whom they were all unfortunate enough to be friends with at the time of the band’s creation. Everybody knew each other to a certain extent, but they weren’t the fast friends they are now.
4. Where is the band based out of and what is your music scene like there? Are there any local bands you could recommend?
The band is located in southern California, with members in San Diego, Long Beach, and the San Fernando Valley in Los Angeles. There are many different music scenes in every manner of genre you can think of here- but we love our friends in the VGM, punk, metal, and synth/synthwave stuff! Some amazing local bands we’ve played with include Street Cleaner, Kirby’s Dream Band, and Shotty!
5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?
Musically we are hugely inspired by new wave of the 80s, synthwave of the 2010s, funk and dance of the 2010s, heavy metal, and classic rock. Thematically our songs are inspired by grand and often silly science fiction themes found in cult films, 90s and 2000s television, and anime from all eras.
6. What are your songs about? (What specific themes do they cover?)
Our songs all have a sci-fi through line- sometimes hard on the nose and sometimes a little bit less obvious. That being said we have love songs, songs of bold fighter pilots, songs of rebirth and renewal, anime intro anthems, songs about being brutally torn apart, and much more.
7. Do you write your own songs? (Discuss the songwriting process in detail.
We do write our own music- and there is no single process for every song. Many were written by one or two members, and others incorporate ideas from every member of the band. We let it happen organically, but we rarely record a song in rigid detail before we’ve jammed it out together and see how it feels. Sometimes lyrics come first, other times we have a riff or melody that feels really kickass and we start with that.
8. What have you released so far and what can someone expect from your works?
We currently have 2 EPs available to listen to right now, Late to the Party and Interstellar Woman, which you can find on bandcamp, Spotify, apple Music, and other major streaming platforms. We used the projects to kind of find our sound, and they’re a good representation of our first couple years as a band! There’s lots of synth, talk box, loud guitars, powerful female vocals, and zany sci-fi energy.
9. Do you have any new music in the works?
We are beyond excited to release our first full-length album! We’ve been working hard at it for many months, and we are extremely proud of what we have made. It definitely feels like a level-up to us, and it has been entirely self-produced.
10. How about playing shows and touring, have anything planned out?
We do have a couple shows lined up at Soda Bar in San Diego on September 4th, and at Resident DTLA on September 5th. We also are planning an album release show, but don’t have a hard date or venue for it yet.
11. What plans do you have for the future as a band?
In terms of our future, we are excited to have joined the Retrosynth Records family and are officially on their label! We look forward to releasing lots of music through them and performing alongside other artists on their roster.
12. Where can we listen to your band and where can we buy your stuff?
Please check out our Bandcamp! eclectotron.Bandcamp.com. You can find all our current releases there, and merch will be available to buy online very soon! You can also listen to our music on all major streaming platforms, or you can come to a show and buy it in person!
