Rockers PRYMER talks of coming together, music choices, releases of said music, and what the future has planned. One of the three members Josiah (Vocals, Guitar), talks of their current situation as far as releases, future plans and much more coming up fast!
1. Where did you get the idea for the band name, you planned it or did it come out just like that?
The band name was originally “Josiah Smith & The Poor Boy $pecial”. I wanted to change it to an actual name to make to make sure everyone felt as if they belonged to something bigger than just being in someone else’s band. We discussed ALOT of band names before deciding on Prymer. The band name comes from a part of a bullet that makes it go bang when the firing pin hits. Or a coat of paint you put down before the final coats go down. And that’s really what we want to do for you. Music has helped all of us through the best and worst of times. And most of all music helped us find ourselves and we want to pass that on to you. That’s what “Prymer” is; here to help you find the true version of yourself.
2. Why did you want to play this genre?
When we first started it was a lot more country/red dirt with more of a strong flavoring of rock n roll. It organically started becoming more rock than country but those roots are definitely still embedded in us. Through a lot of trial and error we slowly started becoming something more.
3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?what we are now and we will continue to evolve.
I (Josiah) have know Dillon Carey for over 10 years, we grew up different towns but within 20 minutes of each other. Dillon was one of the first drummers I’ve ever jammed with. We played a couple of times together when we were younger (between 14 and 17 years old) but nothing ever stuck until years later. I did not know Dylan Voss until the band was in the beginning stages of rolling. He actually grew up on the other side of the state. (Washington, Missouri) and went to college in Warrensburg (about 30 minutes from where I grew up). Our drummer at the time knew him and invited him to practice and he ended up sticking around.
4. Where is the band based out of and what is your music scene like there? Are there any local bands you could recommend?
We are based in the backwoods of Missouri. We are definitely in our own world out here really trying to create something that is our own. However, the closest scene to us is Kansas City which we partially belong to. There are a lot of good bands in that area. I would personally recommend The Stacy’s, Dirty BLVD, or Stone Eagle.
5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?
A lot of times it’s less of a moment of inspiration and more of a grind. We will spend days and hours writing l, pushing through the moments when we aren’t feeling motivated or inspired. But every song is different.
6. What are your songs about? (What specific themes do they cover?)
Our songs are all over the place. Most of what we have released is really just the telling of our story thus far. Our latest song “Left Lane Boogie” is about us getting our generator stolen and the venue writing us a bad check. The whole song is a promise to us and to you that no matter what happens we will continue to chase this dream.
7. Do you write your own songs? (Discuss the songwriting process in detail.)
We definitely write our own songs. Every song is different. Normally one of us will bring an idea to the table and we will look and play through it. Then we all collaborate and discuss and go through different options and ideas. We are all very open and honest about our feelings and preferences, which is very critical for success in a creative environment. Normally we don’t consider a song finished until we’re all happy with it and sometimes that can be a long time. Usually we experiment with our songs playing them live and seeing how certain parts work in front of a crowd before we finalize them. But that’s the beauty in the stage we are now, no one knows all of our songs yet so we can experiment like that and no one will ever know until we release it.
8. What have you released so far and what can someone expect from your works?
Our recent releases are Shatterpoint, Either Way, and Left Lane Boogie.
9. Do you have any new music in the works?
Our new single “Yesterdaze” will be coming out very soon. It is about my personal decision to stay sober.
10. How about playing shows and touring, have anything planned out?
We have been playing locally since 2018. We have been touring into other states for the past couple of years.
11. What plans do you have for the future as a band?
As a band we are going to ride this thing until the wheels fall off. This is our life and our passion. We will continue to tour and release music on a consistent basis as long as we possibly can.
12. Where can we listen to your band and where can we buy your stuff?
