Less Than Perfect Discusses Album Debut, All New Music, and Playing Live!

Modernized metal act LESS THAN PERFECT or LTP got together to discuss with us, their latest releases, new music in the works, playing live, and what plans lay ahead. Check it below.

1. Please tell us about the history of your band and its members.

Less Than Perfect was born out of chaos and consequences.  Formed in 2022 in Denver, LTP rose from the ashes of the pandemic with a mission to create powerful, uplifting rock/metal music that speaks to the human experience. The band’s roots are deeply personal: guitarist Andrew Matson was sent to prison as a teenager, found redemption through music, education, and service - and now performs alongside his daughter, powerhouse vocalist Kyra Matson.

They were joined by Chris Van Meter, a veteran drummer with decades of stage and studio experience who’s seen more backstage brawls and broken sticks than most, and Denny Underwood, a master bassist and music educator whose deep tones help lay the groundwork for LTP’s sound.

Together, they forged a group with purpose, driven not by ego or rage, but by the power of resilience and hope.

2. What’s the origin of the band’s name?

The name Less Than Perfect represents the truth we all live: that we are flawed, messy, human - and that’s where our power lies. The name is about owning our past, embracing our scars, being real, and recognizing that we are all Less Than Perfect. In a genre often dominated by hate and anger, LTP stands as a reminder that diversity and imperfection are some of our greatest strengths.  We’re not here to save the world. We’re here to remind you it’s still worth saving.

3. Where is the band based out of and what is your music scene like there? Are there any local bands you could recommend?

LTP is based out of Denver, Colorado, which has a gritty, diverse, and passionate music scene. There’s a unique blend of metal, punk, indie, and alternative rock bubbling through the city’s venues. We’ve been fortunate to share stages with both national acts and rising local talent. A few local bands we respect and recommend: Lola Black, Connax, and Blood Across the Sky.  Metal in Denver is about survival.

4. How would you describe your style?

It’s aggressive, captivating, and unapologetically human. We blend emotional depth and catchy riffs with the driving power of modern metal. It’s Metal with a Message that you can bang your head to.  Our songs tackle real-life battles: addiction, self-destruction, trauma, and transformation. If you want metal that makes you feel like burning down your past and building something better - welcome to LTP.

5. What have you released so far and what can someone expect from your works?

Or debut album “Progress” (2023) was a sonic punch to the gut - a raw, emotional journey through pain, healing, and growth. Songs like “Wasted Years,” “Divine”, “Choices”, and “Man in the Mask” deal with the idea of rebuilding yourself piece by piece. Our second album, “TENET”, dropped in early 2025.  It takes that same energy and pushes it to the next level. Tracks like “Own Worst Enemy,” “Take It All,” and “Habitual” explore the inner conflicts that can derail us as we work to grow.
Fans can expect depth, heaviness, and authenticity in every note.

6. Do you have any new music in the works?

Yes, always - we have a lot of material and we're constantly writing. We’re back in the studio recording four new tracks including “Never Surrender” and “Casting Stones” that are scheduled to drop in late 2025.

7. How about playing shows and touring, have anything planned out?

Yes! We’ve been building momentum on the live scene, playing alongside national acts like TRAPT, Faster Pussycat, Smile Empty Soul, HED(pe), Nocturnal Affair, and more. We’re now gearing up for a regional tour across the western U.S - bringing the full weight of our sound and message to every city that’s ever felt unheard. Our shows are more than just performances - they’re a space to connect, release, and recharge. No backing tracks, no egos, no negativity. You’ll leave with your throat sore and your heart open.

8. What plans do you have for the future as a band?

We’re not chasing likes, we’re building a movement. LTP isn’t just music; it’s a callout to anyone who’s been counted out. More records, more tours, more giving back - we work with recovery orgs, youth programs, and anyone trying to climb out of the pit. Our mission is to build a community around music that heals, empowers, and transforms. We want to inspire people to rise - no matter where they currently are in life. We’re also exploring multimedia storytelling - video, podcasts, maybe even a documentary - because the story behind the music is just as powerful as the sound itself.

10. What is it you’d like a listener to remember the most when hearing your music for the first time?

That we’re not alone, we’re not worthless, we’re not broken. No one is perfect, we’re all just different.  We all have struggles, doubts, and fears – and different strengths and weaknesses.  There’s joy and beauty in being Less Than Perfect. We want our songs to be a mirror and a lifeline—to remind people that we’re all in this together.  Even in the darkest moments, there’s a path forward.
