Industrial screamo band PROTOKOLL 19 have been creating music for a while now, releasing two full-lengths, along with some remixes here and there. A couple of members of the band got together to chat with us about themselves, music, and the future.
1. Where did you get the idea for the band name, you planned it or did it come out just like that?
Travis: Mostly played off the whole pandemic situation as I wanted the era of when the thought of this project was created to be tied into the name.
2. Why did you want to play this genre?
Travis: I recall the first day I heard the genre, it was Suicide Commando playing at the club. That moment I heard the pattern of the leads, the bass thumping and it was all tied together with an aggressive vocal style, I was hooked.
3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?
Jayson: Prior to starting this band I played keyboards and Travis played drums for another band.
4. Where is the band based out of and what is your music scene like there? Are there any local bands you could recommend?
Jayson: We're from Tampa, FL and we're fortunate to have a very large goth/industrial scene here. If you're looking to check out some other local to Florida I'd say 00tz 00tz, Obsidian and Astari Nite.
5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?
Travis: I wouldn't say there is a specific person, there is definitely multiple artist that are influences for my writing style. As for what really inspires me, it's the support we receive from our family, friends, and our fans. That and a good horror movie. 😅
6. What are your songs about? (What specific themes do they cover?)
Jayson: Most of our songs are about mental health struggle and usually use occult and dark themes as surface level analogy.
7. Do you write your own songs? (Discuss the songwriting process in detail.)
Travis: absolutely, everything is written by Jayson and myself. No AI or third party. I start off composing the music, then I will send it over to Jayson, then Jayson records vocals and sends it back, then we will review it together. Often we exchange more of our ideas together that may improve the track just a little more before wrapping it up and releasing.
8. What have you released so far and what can someone expect from your works?
Travis: well we have a some remixes floating around or pending to be released by the artist they were made for, and 2 full releases, "Mental Decay" and "Somewhere Between Purgatory and Hell". Anyone discovering us that I have had the pleasure of talking to has mentioned how well they relate with the lyrics, others also expressed being fond of the aggressive vibe.
9. Do you have any new music in the works?
Jayson: We always have new music in the works. The feelings never stop coming and there's always something new we feel we need to get out.
10. How about playing shows and touring, have anything planned out?
Jayson: As it stand right now we have quite a few things in the works and some stuff announced already. The best thing to do is follow us on social media to keep up today with these announcements.
11. What plans do you have for the future as a band?
Jayson: We will continue to write new music and travel to new places to give more people the opportunity to see us live.
12. Where can we listen to your band and where can we buy your stuff?
Jayson: Our music is available for streaming on all major platforms and if your looking to purchase it in digital or physical CD formats you can do so through our bandcamp.
