Hardcore punks Terror got signed to Victory Records not so long ago and have released their debut under their name called Live By The Code. Frontman Scott Vogel talks to us yet again about this latest effort and how he manages to keep the scene pure and fun!


1. What made you guys decide to form a band?

Scott: I was actually the last piece to the puzzle. This thing was going happen with or without me. For the year before Terror began, I was content for a while not being in a band and all the bullshit that comes with playing in a HC band. But after a while the itch started and wouldn't stop and here we are today. I think this shit is just part of my DNA.

2. How do you think being in LA changes your sound?

Scott: You know I think Terror kinda brought that real hard and raw style to LA with a groove. I can't think of anyone that was here before us doing it. Strife is close, but Terror has more of a NYHC feel. Yet we still are influenced by Suicidal and even Chain of Strength. I think we are rounded out by HC and metal from across the world.

3. Tell me about the album, Live By The Code.

Scott: Its drops today. And it’s really good. We are very excited for it to finally come out. Thanks to Chad for his producing skills. Tony and Victory for fighting for Terror. Biggie for dealing with me and the whole Terror crew for being still hardcore.

4. If you could go back and change something on the album Live By The Code, would you?

Scott: Nah. This is it. The essence. The movement. The most high.

5. How do you think the band's sound has evolved and changed over the years?

Scott: Its always Terror. It’s always in your face, hard-hitting HC. But we elevate. We grow and learn and try and expand. New blood has also given us the twists we needed to continue.

6. What is your opinion on sites posting your guys material and other bands material?

Scott: Check our shit out and if you feel it go buy the record. We put as much into the layout and art as we did the songs. You’re only getting a piece of the puzzle if you don't get the visuals, lyrics and photos, etc.

7. How do you guys feel about the classifications in metal? Like hardcore, metalcore and other subgenres and how some get a negative rep.

Scott: Terror is a hardcore band. 110 percent. We are open-minded and listen to and play with all sorts of bands, but to us, this is a whole lot more then music. This is a community that we are happy to be a part of.

8. What is your opinion on the current state of hardcore?

Scott: Its alive and well. Amazing bands all over the world. Cool venues and scenes and people being proactive. Old friends are starting businesses and getting their lives in order from things HC taught them. Babies are being born that are parented by people I saw in the pit not too long ago. AF is still going strong and new bands like Suburban Scum and Malfunction and just beginning their journey.


9. What plans do you have for the near future as a band?

Scott: Today the record drops. We’re doing lots of touring in the USA this summer. Hatebreed and Every Time I Die starts today. We have the Lamb of God and All Stars Fest tour up after. We’ll be in Costa Rica for the first time in May. Europe of course and the wheel keeps turning.

10. Anything else you want to say to your fans?

Scott: Fans are for rock bands. Terror’s got friends and supporters who make these shows, tours, and records as much as we do. We salute them. Much respect to Backtrack, Strife, H20, Madball, Your Demise, Comeback Kid, The Set Up, Guilty, No Turning Back, Reaper Records, AYS, Born From Pain, Code Orange Kids, Broken Teeth and I guess I’ll stop there. TERROR has released a new music video for “Live By The Code”, the title track from their forthcoming album, out April 9th. Frontman Scott Vogel stands firmly behind the belief that hardcore is about more than music… it’s about community, respect and sticking to your roots. Vogel comments, “This video is a perfect look at the energy and heart of Terror. When I first found the scene this energy gave me a feeling that I never felt before and it still moves me to this day. Shot in Germany this past fall, this show was one to remember.” Check out the video for it HERE.

TERROR vocalist Scott Vogel comments, “When I was in high school, I would go to ‘Home of the Hits Records’ in Buffalo, NY and every week I would check for new Victory releases. Growing up, Victory Records always had the best hardcore bands, period. They had this awesome packaging and vibe that I loved. INTEGRITY, STRIFE, BLOODLET, EARTH CRISIS -it was a fucking amazing time for hardcore. Later, I met Tony when he came to Buffalo to see SNAPCASE. We stayed in contact and made plans for my second band DESPAIR, but soon after we broke up. Victory and my band BURIED ALIVE worked together for years. They also had HATEBREED, BLOOD FOR BLOOD, ALL OUT WAR and REACH THE SKY, all bands I've always respected and held in the highest regard. This summer I hung out with Tony and we had a wild night in Chicago. We talked about the good and bad of hardcore today and just had a blast. No business talk, no nonsense. We were under contract at the time so there wasn't even room for it. As we got ready to release Live By The Code, TERROR and Century Media debated on how to release the record right and VICTORY RECORDS seemed like the best fit. Tony and I are both insane. We both come from the same place. We both scratch and fight to stay afloat. We still believe in the essence of hardcore and still love WARZONE. This is pretty fucking exciting.”

Vogel claims Live By The Code “hits harder than Keepers Of The Faith”, calling it the “dirtiest, rawest and most hardcore record we’ve done since Lowest Of The Low”. While the album is set for an April, 2013 release date, fans can expect to pre-order their copy of the album soon along with other merch packages. A brand new music video for their album-titled single, “Live By The Code” is also on the horizon, so stay tuned.

Hardcore metallers Terror frontman Scott Vogel caught up with me to discuss the band's upcoming DVD "No Regrets, No Shame: The Bridge Nine Days" that consists of their much earlier works when the band was on their original label Bridge Nine Records. Besides that all new music will be happening within the upcoming months along with touring left and right find out what else was said.

1. So why now, why has No Regrets, No Shame: The Bridge Nine Days come to see the light of day?

Scott: I think our original record label, Bridge Nine Records, just unearthed the footage. It was professionally shot by Ian McFarland from Blood for Blood, when he was first starting out making videos. He was out in California to shoot a music video for the song "Push It Away" and he just filmed these 2 shows for fun. He has since gone on to do a bunch of commercials, music videos, and music documentaries, so it’s cool to see some of his earlier stuff. It is also the 10th year that Terror has been a band, so it’s a way of showing where we were at in our first 6 months of being a band as compared to where we are now.

2. What do you think of the material on this release looking back at way back then, how does it make you feel?

Scott: We still play a few of these songs live so they are certainly still a huge part of the band. Lyrically, they encompass everything this band has ever stood for. When we started, we went full on. We had a demo and started touring immediately, playing all corners of the world. By December, we recorded and had released Lowest of the Low, which was our first release on Bridge Nine. It was an intense and fun time to be out there, playing new songs, to new and old faces.

3. How does it feel to have been around for 10 long years?

Scott: It's flown by. As a band, we have always just looked to what was next. I don't think there was a grand scheme or plan, it was always about just keeping moving, keep writing songs we believed in, keep playing anywhere and everywhere in the world, and have fun playing the shows. If you aren't having fun or no longer believe in the songs you are playing then there is no point to even be out there away from home for 9 months a year.

4. What's new in the recording of your music?

Scott: We will be recording a new album in a few months with Chad Gilbert from New Found Glory, once again helping us produce it. We were extremely happy with our last album, Keepers of the Faith, and hope to surpass the effort, anthems, and urgency that we captured on that release.

5. Do you plan on hitting the road and going on tour anytime soon?

Scott: YES! I don't think we have stopped since 2002. We have a European tour coming up in April. We will probably do a full US tour this summer, and we will do a UK tour this fall. I'm sure we will add some more stuff somewhere in between!

6. What band did you have the best time touring with?

Scott: We have always had a great time touring with Hatebreed. My second band, Despair, toured with them in 1996, and Terror has been touring with them and playing shows with them since 2003. They have always been one of my favorite bands since I first heard them. My longtime friend, Frank Novinec, who played guitar in Terror from 2003-2006, plays guitar for them now, so it's like a big family tree. They are one of the hardest working, most successful, and best hardcore bands ever, so we always look forward to touring with them or playing festivals with them.

7. What the best prank you’ve played on bandmates or other bands?

Scott: It wasn't really a prank, but our old guitarist Doug Weber always rode in the back of the van and kind of had his own world back there. He would get out the back door when we would stop at gas stations. We didn't pay attention one time, and we left him at a gas station in the middle of nowhere, and didn't realize it until about an hour later.

8. How did you get started in music?

Scott: My older brother was into punk bands. That was never really my thing, but I liked the intensity of some of them. We went to see DRI in 1987 and I was just hooked from there, and I started to go to every hardcore show I could possibly go to. Eventually, that led to me singing for a hardcore band in the early 90's.

9. You've toured all over the world but is there a place Terror has not set foot in but would like to?

Scott: We have yet to go to Africa and would love to. That is pretty much the final frontier as far as touring for Terror goes.


10. Was there a song or album that inspired you to want to perform music?

Scott: The first albums I was extremely into were the first two Black Sabbath records, and Whodini's "Escape". I have always loved all forms of music as long as it was honest, real, and raw.

11. So what ís next for you guys?

Scott: We will be recording a new album shortly, and touring all over the world to support it! We will see you on the road.
