Articles by "Invertia"

Industrial black metal act Invertia has been active as of late. They got signed with Ohm Resistance Records and released their sophomore album "Another Scheme of the Wicked", the follow-up to their previous self-titled debut release. Frontman vocalist, guitarist, and bassist Dave Coppola discusses of the follow-up and what lies ahead.

1. Let us get started by filling in our readers as to what the band has been up to in the past year.

Dave: Hi Natalie! Its been a great year!  Since we last spoke INVERTIA has been signed to Ohm Resistance Records and we released our sophomore album "Another Scheme of the Wicked". We played some live shows including a showcase for Ohm Resistance. We got to play with one of my favorite bands The Blood of Heroes, so yeah its been a crazy year.

2. How did you and Ohm Resistance Records come together? Are you pleased with what they have been doing for you thus far?

Dave: Well we had some of there artists remix some of the songs for the album such as End.User and Submerged.  I also had Justin K. Broadrick of Godflesh do a remix and he is also on the Ohm Resistance label in The Blood of Heroes. So it all just kind of fit nicely.  We are very pleased with Ohm Resistance for sure!  We will also be on a on a picture disc with the singer from At the Gates, where we did the music and he sang over it, so we are psyched for that as well.  That release will also feature remixes as well as work with the Science Slam Sonic Explorers, and the track is called "Deep Time Predator".

3. Can you tell us how this album differs from the previous ones? What can we expect and what is the message behind it?

Dave: This album differs in the sense that we just got better at honing in on our craft.  The message is one of paranoia, darkness, it's a hatred for the church and state and a genuine disdain for all things lurking in our shadows and in the cracks!

4. What was the recording process like this time around? Was there anything different that happened or was it the same old studio thing?

Dave: It was the exact studio we used for the self titled album, but again this time with a little more experience going into it.

5. How was the vibe in the studio?

Dave: It always is a blast, it's what we do, so we always look forward to it.  So when your doing something you like to do it just flows, most of the time.  There are times that the whole session goes nowhere but that's few and far between.

6. Did the band have any definitive goals they were shooting for before the recording process began for this album?

Dave: It was just the next set of songs really.  I don't make a lot of goals going into an album other than finishing it.  I like to wait for the surprises in the studio so it's not boring. On the flip side of that, other things are very rehearsed before entering the studio.  But sometimes even the rehearsed stuff will bring the biggest surprises.  That's the best part of the creative process for us.

7. How does the album art relate to the music on the album?

Dave: Damn, we got lucky on that.  The art was done by an artist out of Brooklyn, NY named SHVL FCE.  It shows the chaos of the album, the shapes and shades of gray and black really show a certain misery and grimness that captured the music perfectly!

8. Did you use any new instrumentation you never used in the recording process before?

Dave: No we did the drum machines, guitars, bass and vocals but the newer material will have some more FX than previous material.

9. What does "Another Scheme of the Wicked" mean to you all?

Dave: It means: We are back for another round of madness, so hop on board!

10. Did you feel any pressure to do this follow-up?

Dave: Yeah for sure, I new people would react differently to it but it had to be better than the last.  If feel we achieved that we this album.

11. Where is the new material headed?

Dave: It's nuts! This album will be more dynamic in the sense that everything won't be a gazillion miles an hour and constantly in your face. There will be some material that's slower and colder that's just nasty!

12. What's your favorite song on the album right now?

Dave: My favorite on the album is "Cross-Eyed Christ" right now, my favorite song to play live is "Void of Community".

13. Have you heard of Invertia?

Dave: Who????????? Hahaha!!!! Thank you, Natalie!!!!

Oppressive black metal/industrial music from New England, metal guitarist Dave Coppola and electronic artist Tim Winson meld forces and create a unique hybrid unlike others within the genres one they like to called Invertia. The duo discussed the band's latest self-titled release as well as some t-shirt making plans? For more info feel free to check them out HERE.

1. Can I get a backstory on the band/band biography?

Invertia was formed around 2003. At the time, Dave had been working on writing songs with faster tempos after being in other metal related projects. Tim had been focusing on conceptual electronic noise & the combination of the two became a sort of industrial black metal band.

2. What type of band are you?

We are a little oppressive & a little overwhelming.

3. How did you guys come up with your band name?

Invertia means "reversed," it means "upstream," it means "all things are relative," and "opinions don't count." We made it up, we didn't know it was a real word. It is kind of inverted, and the end of it sounds like it could be this little girl's name, it starts scary & ends nice.

4. You just released your self-titled album this month, do you feel that's a big statement? Band's tend to name their albums self-titled when they feel it's indicative of the sound they've been trying to craft. Do you feel this is the sound you've been trying to achieve with the band?

The sound on our first album is really a collage of two people coming at it from very different backgrounds & once we completed the album it was obvious that this was the sound that would come from that approach. There will always be elements of the sound on our first album that remain through out our music so long as we work together because of that collage.

5. What lyrical theme do you guys use in your music? What message do you want to send?

Dave: "It kinda goes along with the band name, and the things that make me angry, and I can channel that into Invertia and not carry it around with me, thank God. Some people don't have an artistic outlet, or any outlet at all. I don't know how they get through life, and I think that has something to do with the world that we live in today."

6. What bands have influenced your band and its sound?

From black metal bands like Mayhem & Darkthrone, to Industrial bands like Ministry, Godflesh, & Skinny Puppy, or hardcore punk like Misfits & Dead Kennedys, IDM bands like Autechre & Squarepusher, and Noise & No Wave artists like Merzbow & Glenn Branca, we have a ton of influences, but nobody sounds like us because of that.

7. Who writes the songs? Do you have a song writing process?

Dave is everything that's analog and Tim is everything that's digital, though it is very much an equal collaboration. We start with the riffs, arrange them into a song, write beats & digital effects. Once a song begins to form, Dave will write lyrics to it. We add samples & see if it takes.

8. You've also mixed for your second album the follow-up to your self-titled release. What can you tell me about this follow-up release?

We are currently mixing it down for release hopefully in December. We try to make music that WE want to hear & listen to, because we are fans first. We worked on our debut album for a few years before we released it to make sure that it was solid & we are doing the same with the follow-up album.

9. How does this release differ and compare to your self-titled and how has the sound evolved between the two?

Obviously it is going to be a continuation of what we started with the first album. It's like Evil Dead 2; the same, but better.

10. Not only are you two albums down but writing material for what would be your third album, you just can't stop pushing can you?

Hey, we gotta make plans! The third album so far seems to be more experimental but we will have to see how that plays out.

11. Tell me about the side solo projects Tim and Dave are involved with, TranZi3nT and R3TRD?

TranZi3nT is Dave's industrial murder metal project & R3TRD is Tim's work sculpting sound, both projects keep the creative process flowing for us.

12. You mentioned of starting your own record label to put out your own material whatever it may be tell me what drew you to this process and why?

Just to have goals & keep moving forward. Both of us are interested in creating all types of music & our own label would be a sort of home for all of it.

13. Why did you want Perpetual Alert to be remixed?

Tim: "I did it as a fluke, as an experiment to see how much we could twist the song & it actually worked. It is another example of trying to push the boundaries of traditional metal into something new, which is an essential part to how we view our own music."

14. What are your expectations for all these releases?

We are hoping to finally quit our second jobs.

15. What can the fans expect to see from you in the future?

Well we don't play live so maybe we will make some t-shirts.
