Formed in 2001 by vocalist Steve Worley, SACRIFICIAL SLAUGHTER has spent the last decade proving themselves to be one of the most dominating underground acts from the United States. Into 2013 Sacrificial Slaughter proudly announces signing two record deals for the release of their sophomore-label-full-length "The Great Oppression." 1. What was the inspiration for the album name "The Great Oppression"?
Steve: The album name is a play on words about today's society, the scene we play in and the way
we live our very own lives.
2. Is this going to be a concept album?
Steve: It is not a concept album. I would very much like to do a concept album one day. But this
release is just another 10 tracks of our usual alcohol induced debauchery and world domination.
3. Why did you pick "Demand Degradation" as your single?
Steve: That song really stuck out to me early in the writing process and when the vocals came together
in the studio, I knew it was going to be the song that really caught peoples attention.
4. Where are you in the recording process of the new album?
Steve: Done! The album was recorded the week of Halloween last year in Europe.
5. Who is producing the album?
Steve: The album was produced by the band along side Paul Speckmann, Petr Nejezchleba and Pavel
Hlavica.
6. Where are you recording the album?
Steve: The album was recorded at Shaark Studios in Bzenec, Czech Republic.
7. What label will be releasing the album?
Steve: The album will be released in North America by Ossuary Industries and in Europe by Hammerheart Records.
8. How would you describe the overall sound of the new album? How does it compare to "Spontaneous Suicide"?
Steve: Every album has a natural progression. Each release brings us closer to finding the exact sound that we are trying to achieve. This is definitely our best effort to date and we are looking forward to sharing it with everyone.
9. Did the band have any definitive goals they were shooting for before the recording process began for this album?
Steve: I think we knew from an early point in the writing process that this effort was going to far surpass any of the previous releases. So we went into the studio with confidence and made it happen.
10. Are you using any new instrumentation you've never used in the recording process before?
Steve: No different instrumentation, sound bytes, or extra effects. Just our straight forward brand of Extreme Death Thrash that we've been bringing for years.
11. When did you start writing for this album? How was the songwriting process different/similar to previous Sacrificial Slaughter albums?
Steve: Some of the songs we used for this album were compiled from material that we've had for a couple years. Other songs were written in between tours and even road tested at times. We brought it all together in the practice studio and pretty much used the same formula that we always have. Guitar players will bring riffs to the table, put together all the structures with our drummer. Then when the song is ready we will introduce vocals.
12. How has the band’s sound evolved from your previous releases?
Steve: We all grow as musicians every release, so the albums naturally get better as the years go on for the band. We are already talking about ways we can improve for the next album before this one has even been released!
13. Did you feel any pressure to follow it up?
Steve: None at all.
14. It's been a few years since the release of "Spontaneous Suicide". Why such a long time period between albums?
Steve: We toured pretty heavily in support of that album for about 2 years. Then with the lack of label support, it was completely up to us to get another release out. So in 2011 we released 5 brand new tracks with an indie label in Philadelphia called HPGD productions. Did a few tours in support of that release which led to our signings with both Ossuary Industries and Hammerheart records for the 2013 release of our follow up full length "The Great Oppression."
15. Can you go into one or two tracks on the new album? If so, can you give us the track title and brief description of how the track sounds and how it came about?
Steve: We released two songs from the album for people to hear. The first you mentioned is "Demand Degradation." By far the most aggressive material we have ever released. A definite staple in the direction that the band is going. The next track we have available for download is "Communion of Lies." This is a cool track because it features Paul Speckmann from MASTER on guest vocals. Its a real thrashy song with raspy vocals, thunderous drumming and catchy leads.
16. How was the vibe in the studio?
Steve: The vibe was excellent. We were in a beautiful small town called Bzenec on the South Eastern end of the Czech Republic. The studio was built like a cabin, it had a real cozy feel. We had sleeper quarters and a small kitchen. It was really fun. I would get up early every day and walk to the market for breakfast material and cook for the guys before each recording session. The weather was beautiful, people were friendly and the pub was right across the street!
17. When can we expect the new album to be released?
Steve: It's now out in North America and will be out in Europe on June 1st.
18. What are your expectations for the CD?
Steve: I expect it to run its course. We'll tour on it all year and make sure it gets in peoples hands. Then after we've done all that it will be time to do a new one!
19. What are your upcoming tour plans?
Steve: Now through April 1st 2013 we have 32 dates across North America with the legendary MASTER. Then we will be making quite a few festival appearances throughout the Summer before returning to Europe in the Fall.
