Alternative rockers PRAYERS ELECTRIC has released a couple of EPs, with all new music also in the works. Some shows are set, with more music to be made that will make people enjoy it! The band talks about all of this below.
1. Please tell us about the history of your band and its members.
I’m Jem, and I play guitar and sing. Farris plays drums and sings backing vocals. We met in a four-piece called Drat. He originally came in to cover a gig after the drummer left, learned the songs and ended up staying.
When the other members moved on, Farris and I kept playing together because we enjoyed it. We still had gigs to honor too, so there was a practical reason to carry on. I split my guitar into guitar and octave-down bass, and we started working out what the two of us could do. That became Prayers Electric.
2. What’s the origin of the band’s name?
Farris came to me with Electric Prayers. He said it reminded him of those neon church signs you see in places like Las Vegas. I turned it around to Prayers Electric and we both loved it. He came up with the words; I just swapped them round!
3. Where is the band based out of and what is your music scene like there? Are there any local bands you could recommend?
I’m in Old Trafford and Farris lives on the Wirral, but we’re a Manchester band at heart. There’s plenty going on here, and I like hearing bands who have their own ideas about what a song can be.
YAANG and Dead Stilettos are both well worth a listen. Seeing people around us making interesting music makes me want to get back in the room and make something.
4. How would you describe your style?
I’d say alternative rock with big riffs, a lot of fuzz and something you can dance to. There’s a punk energy to it, but we both love a catchy melody. My guitar is LOUD, and Farris gets the whole thing moving on the drums.
It sounds great, it’s fun and it’s a bit silly. We take the music seriously, but we like enjoying ourselves onstage too. Come and watch us. That’ll probably explain it better than I can!
5. What have you released so far and what can someone expect from your works?
We’ve released two EPs, No Hope or Cause and Going Round Again. The newer one came out in August, and “Eyeballs” is a good place to start. Expect riffs and hooks, hopefully a few that stay with you. We’re very proud of both records, and I hope you like them.
I hear us finding our feet as a pair across those EPs. We’ve already improved so much, and I’m excited to hear things getting more polished as we keep going. I can’t wait to see where we take it next. Both EPs are also out together on CD and pink cassette, a nice little capsule of our work so far.
6. Do you have any new music in the works?
Yeah, we’re trying a lot of new things out. I’ve been drawing inspiration for new chords and harmonies from The Beatles, and Farris has talked about how listening to Queens of the Stone Age has been feeding into what we do.
There’ll be new songs popping up in our live sets while we work out which ones will go on the next release. It’ll be good to get them in front of people and see how they feel outside the rehearsal room.
7. How about playing shows and touring, have anything planned out?
We’re playing Telford’s Warehouse in Chester on 9 October. We’d love to see you there. Beyond that, we want to get further around the North West and the rest of the UK. I’d love to put a proper UK tour together, but that isn’t booked yet. We put the confirmed dates on our website:

8. What plans do you have for the future as a band?
Farris said his priority is to make music we love and for people to enjoy it, and anything beyond that is a bonus. I think that’s a good way to look at it. I’d love a UK tour and some bigger festivals as well. Mostly, I want us to keep getting better and keep enjoying it. We’ve come a long way already, and I’m excited about what happens if we keep going.

10. What is it you’d like a listener to remember the most when hearing your music for the first time?
How much fun we are, hopefully! People tell us the songs are catchy, and I hope they’re right, because my goodness, they get stuck in my head. If someone comes away humming something and wanting to hear it again, I’d be very happy with that. Even better if it makes them want to come and have a dance at a show.
