Progressive Post-Hardcore from Essex, UK called Raise These Sails have been hard at work writing all new material that is to be recorded come the New Year for a new EP release. So this time around the band went back to discuss their current EP "Allignments" and single "Godzilla was born here".


1. Where is the band from and what is the music scene like there? Have any band recommendations?

We're from Witham in Essex, the music scene is pretty good we get some sick bands playing near us a lot. Yeah check out our good friends "Who's Diving? Bear's Driving!"

2. What type of band are you?

We're a Post-Hardcore/Metal band.

3. Where does a name like Raise These Sails come from and mean?

It doesn't have any one particular meaning its just a name we've always liked, plus I love Pirates so that's pretty cool.

4. Tell me about the song "Godzilla was born here".

Godzilla is about being messed around and let down and the anger that comes from that. It's my favorite song from the EP.

5. Who would you say are the band's most influential acts?

We each have very broad music tastes so we each are influenced by a variety of bands. As a whole I'd say we take influence from Stray From The Path, The Devil Wears Prada etc.

6. What are your plans for new music?

We're currently writing our next EP that will be recorded in January.

7. What is your favorite song to perform live?

Personally my favorite song to play live is Mantracker, I love how fast that one is.

8. What’s the best and worst shows you've ever played?

I don't think we've had any bad shows to be honest, but personally my favorite show was when we played with Legend and The Elijah at Camden Barfly.

9. Tell me about your instruments (favorite brands…etc).

Connor - Epiphone Les Paul Junior with emg 81 and a Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier through an Orange Cab
Andy - LTD m-10 and a Randell rh100 Head through a Marshall 1960 cab. Harry - Fender Jazz Bass and an Ashdown 300 Evo 2 Head through a Hartke VC410 Cab.


10. What else does Raise These Sails have planned between now and the New Year?

We have a few shows lined up for December but our main focus is writing for the EP at the moment.

Solo artist Benjamin Lemieux or Ben has been posting cover tunes left and right on YouTube and connecting with everyone else via Facebook. So now he's taken some time to talk about his covering abilities and what else he has in-store.


1. What type of music do you guys play and what is your role in the band? I am the singer of Brookline Drive and we are a Pop Rock band.

2. Your first cover was done by One Direction's "Live While We're Young" why go with this particular song?

When I first heard the song I was hooked. I thought it was so catchy and that it'd be fun to sing!

3. What other cover songs do you plan on doing next?

I just finished up a music video for a mash up of two Justin Bieber songs! Gonna have to check it out to see which two ;)

4. You've had the chance to share the stage with various acts Hot Chelle Rae, Hey Monday, Neon Trees, what were those experiences like and who would be the artists of your dreams to tour or share the same stage?

It's been great to be able to share the stage with such big acts. I can't wait to see what the future brings! I would love to share the stage with Maroon 5. I'd have to be on my A game for that one!

5. Aside from covering songs do you have your own material you have written?

I'm actually writing now. I am putting out my first single this winter. I'm really excited about it.

6. Will you be releasing an EP or full-length with the covers and your own material in the future?

I will release an EP in the spring most likely. Not exactly sure on my time frame so far. You can definitely expect a bunch of music from me.


7. Who are some of your musical influences you really look up to the most?


I really like The Rocket Summer a lot. I respect a lot of different singers and musicians so it's hard to say which I take influence from the most.

8. What else can we expect to see from you guys for the remainder of this year?

As for Brookline Drive, we will be playing our last show of the year December 9th in Boston. After that the band plans on taking a break. As for me I will pushing full steam ahead and you can expect new covers and my fist single along with some sweet shows!

As Summer Dies spoke with us in 2009 and now a few years later they are still going strong as before except with a lot more experience, releases, and much more on the horizon!


1. What type of band are you? Can you give ma brief summary what has the band been up too since we last spoke in 2009?

Well weird a weird mix of metal, punk and goth I suppose, I guess the closed bands we sound like would be the Deftones or AFI... As far as what we've been up to we release an EP and a new full length last year called "After Ever After" that was in Hot Topic stores. We did some Mayhem dates and most recently was on tour for 5 weeks with Psychostick and Ventana.

2. What are your songs about? (What specific themes do they cover?)

Most of them are kind of autobiographical , usually relationships with people , life in general.

3. Do you write your own songs? (Discuss the songwriting process in detail.)

Yes we write our own songs basically one of us usually Adam comes in with a skeleton and then we write it together from there.

4. Who are your musical influences?

The Deftones, Therapy, AFI, The Smiths, The Cure, Iron Maiden, the Smashing Pumpkins to name a few were pretty all over the place there.

5. You have several releases out "Sincerely" "Ashes" "Close Your Eyes" and "After Ever After" which was the one that started things off and who followed that lend up to right now?

Close your eyes was our first release then Sincerely then Ashes, then After Ever After is our newest and were in the midst of writing a new EP we hope to have out in early spring.

6. What kind of expectations did you have for the album when you first started writing the new material?
How do you feel about the record now, that it's done, pressed, and been out for a while?

Honestly we want everything we do to be bigger and better than the last thing , we kind of write for ourselves ya know, now that the newest record is out its fun  to play those songs live with a better lineup, but looking forward to the next one. :)

7. Why did you want to go and call the album "After Ever After" what does the title represent and is this a concept release?

It's kind of a personal thing for Adam and kind of tribute to his late grandmother, as far as the record it's pretty angry i was going through a nasty breakup at the time and we were dealing with cutting ties from a few members , its about people turning out to be not who you thought they were.

8. How do you describe your music to people?

Its definitely different and dark.

9. What image do you think your music conveys? hopefully a good one. :)


10. What shaped together As Summer Dies and how has your sound progressed since you first got started?

When Adam i got together we didn't really have a vision we kind of just played stuff we liked and it was good cuz it made us unique in a world of cookie cutter bands and i still feel that to be true today.

11. How do you feel your latest album fits in with the rest of your releases?

It's a progression its more complex lyrically and musically we always try and push ourselves in the studio.

12. What inspires you to do what you do?

Just a love of music and creating it as art.

13. What advice would you give to fellow bands?

Play for you and follow your hearts work hard and don't let the haters get you down.

14. How does music affect you and the world around you?

It's pretty much at the center of everything I do.

15. What are the biggest obstacles for bands?

People don't seem to have the loyalty they used to its all about the next single as opposed to an album and we refuse to really write that way cuz to us it's still art maybe were dinosaurs haha.

16. Do you have anything else planned for 2012?

Well we did lots in 2012, 70 plus shows a new record, so 2013 hopefully will bring a new ep , a bunch of touring again and new fans!

Australian blackened symphonic death metallers Advent Sorrow long awaited debut "Before the Dimming Light" is quite a work of art, with a style like this the saga that is Advent Sorrow is only just the beginning.....


1. Where are you guys from originally?

We come from Perth Australia, which is labelled the most isolated city in the world, but we still have all the good stuff like cheese, toothpaste and those fragrance pine trees you hang in your car.

2. How did you come together?

I guess the same way a lot of bands start these days, internet ad with members all loving the same music and being able to work well together. a couple of us have been friends before the band started and have come together.

3. What is the origin of the band's name?

Pretty much ADVENT "the coming or arrival" and SORROW " Mental suffering or pain caused by injury, loss, or despair", describes our sound with aggression and classical symphonic sorrow.

4. What type of band are you?

We seem to drift into a few different styles coming from our influences, but a Blackened Symphonic Death Metal band has kinda stuck with our current EP.

5. You guys have a unique sound, which bands would you say influence you the most?

We try and stay away from the from the typical Dimmu Borgir, Cradle of Filth etc, normally we listen to a lot of soundtracks and doom metal to keep us inspired.

6. What was the inspiration for the EP name Before the Dimming Light?

Before the Dimming Light is very symbolic. Before the Dimming Light is a concept based EP on a murderer and his victims. Before the Dimming Light in our concept means multiple things, but the meaning most applicable is "before the dying soul". The dimming light, is our murderer's dying soul.

7. Will you be shooting a music video for any of the tracks off the EP?

We are currently filming a music video for one of the tracks which is coming along quite nicely, should be out before the end of the year.

8. Tell me about the song "Before The Dimming Light"?

Before the Dimming Light is the first track off the EP. It is actually the end of the story as well so to speak. The song is about the murderer's final moments as he recaps his victims whilst in prison and contemplates his inevitable hanging. It describes the moments before the hanging, being hung at the gallows and what happens to him having been hung.

My mind corrupt, drowning in a fog of depravity and silence.
This long rope tightens tighter round my throat!
My body lies still, yet superstition remains!
Suddenly, one last hatefilled outcry!
"Your daughters sobbed and wept!"

9. If you could go back and change something on the album Before The Dimming Light, would you?

Probably not to be honest, we made do with the best environment/work area we had and the response from the EP has been huge! We have learnt a lot from the experience and we plan to put our new knowledge into the album, but we can't complain with how the Ep has worked out.

10. What are your songs about? (What specific themes do they cover?)

Before the Dimming Light is a nightmarish insight into the tortured mind of a murderous lunatic; each song describing but a particular chapter and stage of his descent into madness.

11. Do you write your own songs? Can you discuss the songwriting process in detail?

We write all our own songs, and the songwriting process can differ song to song, or at least it did when we put the EP together. Rhys usually starts off the song writing. Once the initial foundation of the song is laid out, then everyone else makes any changes or improvements. The concept is written by Rhys, as well as the lyrics for each song. Constantly he gets feedback from the band regarding the lyrics and the concept itself so as to make it as interesting and shocking as possible.

12. How do you describe your music to people?

"Its pretty fast like black metal with keyboards and stuff".

13. What image do you think your music conveys?

Hopefully it conveys a few different images depending on the song. We try to evoke a real sense of atmosphere with our instrumentation and vocals.
We hope that when you are listening to Before the Dimming Light, that you are sucked into a horrific image of despair and violence.

14. What live performance experience have you had?

We have played many live shows over the years and get the most satisfaction when we unleash our music on the crowd. Playing live allows us to take advantage of our costume and stage presence. We love nothing more than drowning the crowd in smoke and blasting them with murderous music.

15. How do you rate your live performance ability?

As I said, we love playing live and I believe that a live performance is what conveys the music most effectively. We work hard enhancing our stage show by adding various elements and are always trying to come up with something original and fitting with the music.

16. What is your favourite song to perform live and which one really gets your energy up and blood pumping?

We actually enjoy playing the slower songs live and taking advantage of the smoke machine with the loud orchestral keyboards. The crowd loves the outro to Withered By Her Curse. It is crushing and epic. Seeing the crowd's reaction to it is one of my favorite things. It is why we do what we do.

17. How do you promote your band and shows?

Promotion is an increasingly difficult thing nowadays, with so many competing bands, with similiar styles. Coming from Australia doesn't make things any easier! Word of mouth is the best form of promotion, so we try to make as best use of that as we can. The more people that have heard of us, the more likely we are going to be able to extend out of Australia.


18. Describe your show, visual and musically for us.

They say a picture can speak a thousand words, so here's a photo from the launch of Before the Dimming Light.

We dress in tattered clothes, adorn war paint, spit venomous music at the crowd and drown them in smoke and mist.

19. Who in the band would win in a headbanging contest?

Jordan would win hands down with his milling! if his boots weren't so heavy he would be the next Felix Baumgartner.

20. What is your favorite headbanging style to use?

Mainly milling, can't beat it!

21. How many band t-shirts are in your personal collection?

Too many! from ones i regret buying to the decaying ones i shouldn't be seen in public wearing.


22. What advice would you give to fellow bands?

Don't act like chogs and always drink your milk.

23. What are the upcoming plans you have lined up for the rest of this year?

We have gone straight into writing are first full length album so we are pretty busy, we plan to jump on any shows or festivals we can so that we keep active live.

24. Anything else you want to say or add?

Peasants, raise your fists! Big thanks to anyone who leaves us feedback or purchases our EP! It all helps fuel us to tour and work on the album.

Europe's Kill The Lycan has has it's downfalls and up-rises since its formation and release of its EP "Avalanche". Now that things have changed for the better there is no telling as to where these guys will end up next!


1. What does it take to Kill The Lycan?

Silverbullets!

2. Where did the name come from and is there a story behind it?

The name came from the motion picture “Underworld – Rise of the Lycans”! There’s a vampire in the movie screaming: “Kill the Lycans!” and so we took the singular tense.

3. What happened to your frontman and has there been any luck with finding a new one?

All good times come to an end, and at this time there was the end for this era, and a new one will come for sure! Until now we don’t have a new one!

4. What was the inspiration for the EP name Avalanche?

It was our first recorded CD, and the CD “Avalanche” should come down to earth like an avalanche! And so it did!

5. If you could go back and change something on the album Avalanche, would you?

In this time it was the perfect match for us, but nowadays we came to a point where our style and influences have changed a lot, and everything is getting heavier!

6. What are your songs about? (What specific themes do they cover?)

The lyrics in “Avalanche” are most likely about situations in normal life and all their surroundings!

7. Do you write your own songs? Can you discuss the songwriting process in detail?

Yeah we just play our own songs, we did a cover of Backstreet Boys “Incomplete” a while ago, but we’re not playing it any more!

The songwriting process starts with Stevo’s riffing then Erik kicks in with his ideas and that’s the point when the raw structure can be heard. And then Michael and Siti join in for the final processing. In the end the vocals overdub it! And that’s it!

8. You mentioned that your in pre production phase for the debut album what have you gotten in mind for it?

That’s true we’re right in the middle of our pre production phase for our debut album! The only thing we can say for now is, that it’s getting heavier, faster and a lot more aggressive and mature than ever before!

9. How much different do you think this one will be in comparison to your EP?

It will be definitely a different world!

10. What image do you think your music conveys?

Pure Brute.

11. How do you describe your music to people?

Fast, Heavy brutal Metal.

12. What live performance experience have you had?

Not enough!! We want more, more and more.

13. How do you rate your live performance ability?
Invite us and find out!

14. What is your favorite song to perform live and which one really gets your energy up and blood pumping?

I’d say Rise up  it was the first song we wrote for the EP and it’s the strongest song on it in my opinion.

Five piece post hardcore act from Southern Maryland called When Cities Sleep took the time to discuss with me their formula with how they came about to what can be expected on their EP "Limitless". Check what all went down below.


1. Where does a name like When Cities Sleep come from and mean?

Band: We went through a whole list of different names we were thinking of and When Cities Sleep was the one we could all agree on.

2. Tell us the brief history of your band.

Band: Our bassist and lead guitarist originally started the band when they were in 9th grade. After a couple years and a few member changes we've been hauling ass to make the best music we can.

3. What type of band are you?

Band: Post Hardcore/Metalcore/Rock

4. Tell me about the title for your release Limitless?

Band: We picked one of our songs that meant the most to us. In the song Limitless, it's about breaking away from someone who had been controlling and basically holding back any future plans. This someone set limits as to how much our vocalist could go and he ended up letting that person go, ultimately making his future limitless.

5. Who writes the songs, what are they about?

Band: Mike, our vocalist, writes all the lyrics.

"Limitless": Explained in question 4 above.

"Monster": Anyone who tries to get away with lying and cheating

"Reflections": This song is about when Mike had his doubts about our band and was considering joining another band and in his mind he felt selfish only to try and further his singing career but was blinded by that thought and realized that in this band is where he belonged.

"Holly Station": This was written about a former band member who, at the time we kicked him out, was very spiteful and treated us like shit. So…yeah.

"Calamity": This was Mike's personal message to his father who had passed away in 2004 and basically we were hoping through this song we could connect with those who have also lost loved ones.

6. How would you describe the overall sound of the new release?

Band: Southern, heavy, ambient. Like the old stuff but way better.

7. Did the band have any definitive goals they were shooting for before the recording process began for this release?

Band: Yes. We actually had some things we needed to get straightened out like getting our van situation straight and getting our music out to more fans beyond the MD VA DC areas.

8. Who are your musical and non-musical influences?

Band: We all have our different influences.
Mike: Zac Johnson (I See Stars), Austin Carlile (Of Mice & Men), Haley Williams (Paramore), and Matty Mullins (Memphis May Fire).
Justin: Memphis May Fife, Texas In July, Motionless In White, I The Breather, Upon This Dawning, The Devil Wears Prada, Asking Alexandria.
Alex: Memphis May Fire, Sleeping With Sirens, Attack Attack, Issues, Frank Ocean, Horizons, I See Stars, In Fear And Faith, Incubus.
Ricky: The Word Alive, Attack Attack!
Austin: Of Mice And Men, Paramore, Thomas Lang, Memphis May Fire.

9. Are you using any new instrumentation you've never used in the recording process before?

Band: No, not really just better skills.

10. When did you start writing for this release?

Band: In the summer of 2012

11. Can you go into one or two tracks on the new release? If so, can you give us the track title and brief description of how the track sounds and how it came about?

Band: "Calamity", was originally only a chorus and when we went to the studio everything kinda fell into place around that chorus. 

With "Monster" we were trying to go for a more "mainstream" feel with similar sounding guitar riffs throughout the song instead of technical riffs displayed in our other songs.

12. How do you promote your band and shows?

Band: Our bassist does all of our design work and we try to use that to our advantage with flyers, promo videos, etc.

13. Describe your show, visual and musically for us.

Band: You're gonna have to come out to one of our shows and find out ;)

14. What are your dreams and goals?

Band: To have our music be heard and play for great fans and make a career out of it.

15. How much more can we expect to see from When Cities Sleep for the rest of this year?

Band: More shows, a possible label, and maybe some extra little goodies you'll have to stay tuned to find out.

Finland dark rockers Six Inch have got all new music in the works but for the time being their current releases of demo recording's can be heard across the web. Andy and Kim of the band spent some time to discuss the matters of music that can be good or bad however you look at it.


1. Where does a name like Six Inch come from?

It's the Finnish men's average penis size. Maybe couple inches too much but we're not that humble.

2. What's the music scene like in Finland, have any band recommendations?

Too much rap and pop but still quite versatile. We prefer rock and metal and would recommend Stam1na and Amorphis.

3. You've released four different releases over the years which would you say is your best and worst works?

All of the releases are demos but we're working on our debut album at the moment. The quality of the album will be much better and it will be our best release for sure. When talking about demos we can't decide which is the best and the worst.

4. Can you tell me about your demo recording of "Cripple".

Cripple was a demo song that was written in five minutes and recorded in an hour. :D

5. What is the song "Cripple" about?

"I feel myself like a cripple baby!" That's the whole idea. Savvy? ;)

6. Do you have anything else new in the works as of right now?

Amazing debut album and single song with music video.

7. Since your band is a dark rock metal group did you do anything dark and demonic for Halloween?

Andy sucked blood and Kim sucked cock.

8. What about shows is there a tour or any traveling over to the U.S. or nothing is set in stone.

At the moment we have three upcoming gigs in Finland and probably a mini tour in Spain. We're ready to come to the US any time if there is a right kind of promoter there. Arrange us gigs please. ;)

9. Helsinki is your hometown are you familiar or friends with the Helsinki vampires The 69 Eyes?

Position 69 is familiar to the whole band. Nothing to do with Jyrki and the guys. :)

10. What are your songs about? What specific themes do they cover?

The demo songs are all about being an asshole. The album will be poetic and cinematic. While the themes are all gothic.

11. Do you write your own songs? Can you discuss the songwriting process in detail.

Sure. Usually someone of the band composes a song and then we transcribe it together. Andy and Pinja write the lyrics.

12. Who are your musical influences?

Marilyn Manson, Evanescence, Nightwish, Korn, Deftones... These are the main influences for the debut album.

13. How do you describe your music to people?

Horror, dark and melancholic music from the middle of the darkest blood during the coldest time of winter.

14. What image do you think your music conveys?

It causes deep depression and raises suicide statistics. Or makes you happy.

Brutal couldn't get more heavier than with Century Media Record's latest additions the Grand Supreme Blood Court! With their history being quite massive as it were the band has seen past it and moved forward with an all new release called "Bow Down Before The Blood"  is literally punishing and unpretentious death metal of five veterans who just do what they do best – honest and uncompromising death metal is simply what you get. Guitarist Eric Daniels took the time to discuss the band's origin story of their past, how the song writing is done within their atmosphere, and just what the deal is with the almighty death metallers known only as GRAND SUPREME BLOOD COURT!


1. Can you give me a brief summary as to how the band came about?

Bob Bagchus - Drums
Martin van Drunen - Vocals
Alwin Zuur - Guitars
Eric Daniels - Guitars
Theo van Eekelen – Bass

The original idea was to do an project with the name The Company Of Undertakers. The reason it was not lifted from the ground was the busy schedule and commitments of everyone in this project. Some riffs kept laying down, nothing picked up, also some complete song-parts. The long distance between our home-towns also wasn't very lucrative. But after a while Bob, Martin and myself we looked through the material we made that time ago, went into the rehearsal-room and finished two complete songs. Those songs also are being recorded on the album. Because this was a new start and beginning, Martin came up with the name Grand Supreme Blood Court. It was born and to be meant as an band of its own, not a project-status anymore.

2. What’s the origin of the band’s name?

Well, the origin of the band’s name is the combination between the Grand Jury and the Supreme Court. But the Blood Court did exist and perhaps it exists although still in current time. The whole idea behind this concept to create an album which the song titles match with this idea, music-wise and the lyrics as well. Martin created the band-name and his expertise to write the lyrics and song titles as the album title as well.

3. How did you get signed with Century Media Records?

We had offers from 3 record companies, they were interested in GSBC. As you’re right, according to the past relationship with Century Media, and they were the ones who really took interest and had some sort of schedule how to release the album. It’s a big family, very professional and the relationship is friendship. They know what they want from us, and we know what to expect from them, although they surprises us in a nice way every time. The people there are hard workers, dedicated to the right kind of metal, and with a kind way of correspondence. That all, made us decide to get involved to build up the relationship between band and record company. I've always worked with them in the early asphyx-years and it felt comfort. So never change a winning team!

4. What inspired the album title and is it a concept album?

The album is an concept-album about the Blood Court.  All lyrics are bounded together for this idea. Martin wrote the whole concept. It is too much detail to tell about the lyrics but the main inspiration is that the Blood Court is coming on earth, don’t know where it came from, and will judge everyone inside the court a brutal death. When you are picked out and dragged inside the court you know already going to die. Which way you’re gonna die you don’t know that’s the decision about the grand jury and judges. After the task is done for the Blood Court it will vanish to another place nobody knows where to. This is the story for the album like a comic is written for it, packed in brutal lyrics and of course music.

5. What are your songs about? What specific themes do they cover?

The songs reflect pure agony, horror and the story about the Blood Court. One song is about “Public Castration”, to give attention towards child-abusers and how the Blood Court will deal with this sick persons. The main concept about the lyrics are the hate we feel against the things in life we dislike most, and the virtual Court which gonna verdict this. Combined with the brutal music this whole album fits like the lyrics part and the music part.

6. Do you write your own songs? Can you discuss the songwriting process in detail?

Yes we write our own songs. Alwin, Bob and me we together composed and arranged all the songs for the record. 2 songs were made earlier, and those ones we did Martin, Bob and me to made them definite. About 2 years ago I started to compose riffs and recorded them into my pc, made mp3 from that sent to Bob and Martin, they liked it right away and they were feeling good I was becoming back to make music again. Together Alwin and I we did the most riff writing, we are a golden tandem as said, we know each other what we like and the best way to compose the riffs together. You will hear two guitars on the album, just that extra touch to complete the songs. That we have many possibilities in future to make solid good songs. First I collect the best riffs I made, recorded them at home, and sent it to the other guys.

Together Bob and I discuss on how a song begins and what kind of song we want to make, like mid tempo or doom-like begin of a song. We work that out, and just see how the riffs fits together. On the writing process for this album, Alwin and I did compose a lot together. Most riffs I made however Alwin his ideas and riffs fitted with mine and when I was stuck he filled in exactly. The structure inside the band is very open. Everyone can ventilate their idea’s, it’s not from 1 person only. I like it this way, cause the feeling we all like the definite songs is much more right. The goal is to make the best songs together. Cause I had more time, due to the busy schedules of the other boys, it was natural that I made a lot of riffs. It was relax to do so on this way. Alwin has the skills to make demo-songs at home. We played the guitars live in the computer, and he made the songs ready with computer bass and drums, to get the idea of the song and the counts of the riffs. It was fun and thrilled to do so. We did all 10 songs this way, and when we decide the songs are final, we record all songs in studio with the guide of the demo-songs. We recorded at Sonic Assault studio with Frank as engineer, and it was nice to do so.

7. Who are your musical influences?

Bands like; NECROVORE, FUNERAL BITCH, MALHAVOC, old SLAUGHTER (can),
old POSSESSED we like most to give an idea where we put inspiration. Bob and I we are really huge horror/thriller movie freaks. Also that atmosphere which created in those movies we use in our music.

8. How would you describe your music to people?

Brutal, heavy, mid-tempo changed with doom-parts, songs with a drive, music played with the heart and souls.

9. What image do you think your music conveys?

Horror, death, excitement, rough, raw, to the bone!

10. What are your expectations for this CD?

The real fans to dig this one up, play the good live-shows, opportunities to continue our music, and the most important item….satisfy our fans.


11. What are your upcoming tour plans?

No touring plans considering the busy schedule of everyone involved in GSBC. We do live-shows, our first show is on the 1st of December in Ingolstadt Germany, the premiere-show of GSBC; also the chance is big we play at the Party San next summer. We do like to play the festival shows and some club-shows too.

Cleveland, Ohio coreheads Fallen Captive have gotten the fiery passion of metalcore running through not only their blood streams but their veins as well. Thus the "Edge of Collapse" EP demonstrates the intensity and brutality that courses through these guys since day one! Bassist Michael Tata talked to us.


1. So where does a name like Fallen Captive come from and is there a meaning behind it?

Michael: The name was chosen from former bass player, Matt Lampa. We were trying to come up with something that would catch people’s attention and Fallen Captive sparked our interest. We think the name fits well with what we do musically and it has stuck with us ever since.

2. "Edge of Collapse" is your debut EP how does it feel to have it out and about?

Michael: It’s awesome! We’ve had a great response from it so far and we can’t wait to show the world what we have in the works for our next release. (E.O.C. is actually our 2nd EP, we released a 4 song EP in 2010).

3. What does the title "Edge Of Collapse" represent and is it a concept release?

Michael: Edge of Collapse is not a concept release but the name represents a struggle. We all go through struggles every day, whether it’s big or small, but in the end these struggles help us grow and we become stronger. In our writing, our lyrics are about going through a negative situation and making a positive outcome. Our lyrics come from our own personal experiences. Which is why I believe people like them; they are relatable.

4. What are your songs about? (What specific themes do they cover?)

Michael: I guess I kind of covered that with the previous question, but to go more in depth about the songs is that they come from our past relationships and the people who are involved in our life.

5. Do you write your own songs? (Discuss the songwriting process in detail.)

Michael: We absolutely write our own songs. As far as the process goes, our guitarist, Jim, starts the process off with some of the riffs he comes up with. He then brings them to practice and we build off of them. Jay creates his drum parts, Jim and Rob collaborate together with the guitar work, I add my parts for bass, French adds his keys to the mix and Mitch fits his vocal to the music.

6. Who are your musical influences?

Michael: We all have different influences when it comes to our own personal tastes in music, but I think we could agree and say that without Killswitch Engage, As I Lay Dying, August Burns Red and many more, this band would not exist. I think the fact that we all have different tastes in music helps us with the diversity in our music.
7. Do you have material written for your full-length?

Michael: We just finished filming two music videos that should both be out by the end of the year. Since we are done filming we are currently writing some new material but not enough for a full length just yet. When we put out a full length, we’re going to give you a full length; 60 minutes is the plan. We don’t like to rush our writing process because we want these songs to be the best that they can.

8. How do you describe your music to people?

Michael: Describing our music to people can be challenging at times. We don’t really sound like any other band out there so comparing ourselves to somebody else just isn’t right. We’re considered metalcore but we add a little bit more than your average metalcore band. We definitely have something for everybody who enjoys heavy music.

9. What image do you think your music conveys?

Michael: We would like to think a positive one. Overcoming obstacles is important in our journey through life and hopefully we make people see that through our music; that they can overcome any obstacle that life brings them.

10. You're having two opportunities one to play alongside Born Of Osiris and Unearth while the other is Asking Alexandria, As I Lay Dying, among a ton of others how does this make you feel?

Michael: We’re very excited for both! We’ve played with all 4 of the bands that you just mentioned before and have even gained a personal relationship with some of them. It’s an honor to be playing with some of the biggest bands in the world and some of them that you’ve even looked up to starting our musical journeys. We are definitely looking forward to playing in front of the crowd for both of those shows and looking forward to seeing some of our old friends as well.

11. How do you promote your band and shows?

Michael: Facebook is definitely our primary resource for our promotions. We usually promote through our social networks, with flyers and of course going to other shows and just talking with people.

12. Describe your show, visual and musically for us?

Michael: Our live shows is what makes people turn their heads and say “Who is this?” When you see us perform live, we’re not there to just play you our music, but we’re there to put on a show and make sure everyone is having a good time. Stage presence is so important when putting on a show and if the crowd sees you moving and having a good time, chances are they will be doing the same. With all our personalities on stage, you definitely get a good variety of presence depending on who you are watching. You can expect to see us in our goofy, intense and epic presences. You can typically see me hanging upside down from ceilings while playing, Mitch likes to get carried all the way to the bar to do a shot and then get carried back to the stage, and you can also see us chasing each other around the stage. Come see us at a show and hang out!

13. What inspires you to do what you do?

Michael: This has probably been the easiest question so far haha. What inspires us to keep doing what we’re doing is, without a doubt our fans. Without our fans we are absolutely nothing and I can’t express or even put into words to tell you the feeling that these people bring to us. It’s a privilege every time we get to play on stage and whether it’s 5 or 500 people, we are going to give you all that we have!

14. What advice would you give to fellow bands?

Michael: Keep doing what you love and always have fun! Being in a band is a lot of work and very expensive, but it’s worth every single penny and second!

15. Remaining plans for the rest of this year are what?

Michael: Our plans for the rest of the year include writing new material, playing some awesome shows like Born of Osiris and Asking Alexandria, releasing two music videos and also giving back to our fans with a special show we will be announcing soon.

Loud hardcore rooted rockstars What Hands Are For took some time to talk to me about how the band came together, to what their name symbolizes, how their influences are inspired, and what else they have in-store between now and the rest of their musical career!


1. How did you come together?

We pieced ourselves together over a couple of years. Most of us were involved with the local metalcore craze of the mid 2000's. we came together as an opposition to the kind of music we were playing as teenagers.

2. What type of band are you guys?

We are a loud band. We named our first EP Loud Ass. People routinely tell us to turn down and it will help us sound better, but we have yet to listen because... We're sadists. We are rooted in hardcore but our branches are all over. We write songs to be catchy, but they come out darker. I'd like to say we sound like a lana del rey lip augmentation.

3. So tell me why the name What Hands Are For does it symbolize or represent anything for the band?

It's a line in a Smiths song. We had many terrible band name ideas. We had just about settled on Go West, but ... They are a band already. Perhaps you remember the classic King of Wishful Thinking?

Anyway. We figured Pretty Girls Make Graves and Panic! At the Disco were onto something so we listened to The Smiths- Handsome Devil and tah-dah...that line  resonated with us. Most people think it's about jerking off or copping a feel or playing music. But it's more controlling than that.


4. You released an EP "...Please Believe Me" can you tell me where the title came from and is it a concept release?

The title please believe me was pulled from the song Me Myself and My Terms, which is this self comparison to Charles Foster Kane, but there is a certain desperation in trying to have that kind of control. Things unwind. Balance is lost. Challenges become impassible. There is a lot of talk about being two different people, the self being portrayed or the so-called real self and it's a fight figuring out if either one of them are good or bad...  But they both want to be validated.


5. Why did you pick Jungle Riots as your single?

It's awesome, and we wanted to work with Kyle Black!

6. Tell me about the song Jungle Riot?

Well, following what PBM was about comes this song about the idea of living life to the fullest and changing who you are to follow your dreams and looking back on the wreckage it's caused.

8. Do you guys have any new music or side projects in the works?

We have a series of EPs we are releasing thought out 2013 starting in January. The project has so far taken on the name These Trying Times because its been three years in the making. shout outs to college and capitalism for making that time between releases possible. Also our drummer is in another band called Spirit Fangs who are a wonderful indie rock band turned hardcore with a great ear for songs.

9. Where do you see What Hands Are For in 5 years?

Dead as fuck or sold out theaters.
