Hollywood trio Stretford End recently contacted me to talk with them about how their journey began, where it's gotten them, and where it's headed next. Besides that Stretford End have released not just one but two releases, entitled "Prelude", and "Air-Conditioned Life", in which of course all leads up to the follow-up which is being produced by Gus Cryns, who's worked with such acts as; Panic! At The Disco, Foxy Shazam, and Motion City Soundtrack. So sit back, relax, and get to rock your socks off because lead vocalist, guitarist, and pianist, Alex and percussionist Prentice are giving us the lowdown.

1. How did the band come up with the name Stretford End?

Prentice: I happen to be the world's biggest Manchester United Supporter. On the west side of the stadium Old Trafford faces the town of Stretford, and is known as the "Stretford End".  A very loud and supportive section that is known to be as loud as a 747 airplane taking off!  We thought that would fit perfectly!  ...Also to secretly show my undying love and support to the club!  Hahaha.

2. How did US Management and Artist Development Company, The Inner Light Agency find out about Stretford End. What was involved in getting signed with them?

Alex: We heard good things about Damon and iLA from other bands that he has worked with, so we sent him a demo. He liked what he heard and after a few phone calls we signed with them.

3. How long had Stretford End been together when you were signed by US Management and Artist Development Company, The Inner Light Agency?

Alex: A little more than a year, at that point.

4. Did you ever get to the point where you said it's never going to happen?

Alex: I think we get to that point about once a week hahahaha.

Prentice: HAHA yeah that seams about right!  Sometimes twice a week. Oh God.

5. You’re currently in the process of working on your debut full-length how did you get involved with working alongside with Gus Cryns? Who's worked with such acts as; Panic! At The Disco, Foxy Shazam, and Motion City Soundtrack.

Alex: We actually had sent out a bunch of demos to producers, one of which was John Feldman who Gus was working for at the time. Gus liked our sound and contacted us, offering to produce "The Entertainer", one of the tracks off our first record. We really enjoyed the experience and the chemistry we have together in the studio, so we recorded our last E.P. "Prelude" with him after that. We're just continuing that relationship into this next batch of material.

6. When can we expect the debut album to arrive?

Alex: We're shooting for March 2011 at the moment.

7. How does it come in comparison to your other releases "Prelude", and "Air-Conditioned Life"?

Alex: We've really come into our own and found our sound with this record. With "Air-Conditioned Life" we were figuring out who we want to be as a band, and you can hear that experimentation continue all the way through "Prelude" as well. With "Letters On Sunspots" we've created a sound that is all our own; new yet familiar at the same time. We run the gamut from Rock to Indie to Pop but this time it all sounds like the same band.

Prentice: Absolutely. Alex and I have been writing together for a while, and we finally feel now that with "Letters" we have found our "voice" or "sound".  It’s a very unique and ambitious sound that was only achieved through trial and error.

8. Who was behind the artwork for these albums and is there a theme or a meaning behind them?

Alex: I've done the artwork so far, mainly because we didn't have it in our budget to hire a proper artist. The themes that I deal with in my lyrics are usually the current social issues of our time, along with the broader experiences of life, death, love and hope. The theme of "Letters On Sunspots" is speaking the truth when no one wants to hear it.

9. What is your best fan experience?

Alex: We have fans?

Prentice: AHAHAHA!  We went out to dinner last month at BJ's on a pretty packed night, and was seated in a corner booth. It was a spot visible to the whole place.  Constantly everyone there was looking at us. The waitress was so sweet, and asked for our autographs, and a group of ladies at a table next to us asked our waitress as well to get our autographs for them.  Alex accidently broke his wine glass, and it was brushed off, and he was served a new glass and more wine at no charge, and we got like free food at the end too.  It was pretty awesome!

10. If a young musician came up to you - what advance would you give them about getting into the business?

Alex: Don't do it. Not unless you're absolutely sure that it's what you want to do with your life, and are prepared to sacrifice everything for it. If you are, then I would say take your time building your band; make sure that you have good players and your personalities work well together.

Prentice: You must willingly accept the fact that you WILL lose everything before you reach a gain. Especially when it comes financially and emotionally you just need to be ready at all costs. If you think this will come easy and lightly, sadly you are FOOLED! Make sure the guys/girls you are playing with are on the same page of the story you are on!  And stick together till the end.

11. What's the band's favorite song to play live?

Alex: For me, it's always whichever ones are the newest.

Prentice: Any song that the crowd likes!  Hahaha. Personally it’s Starstruck.  That song gives me a lot of freedom to go off into a drum fantasy and have my Tommy Lee moment! ;-)

12. How does the band go from one show to the next?

Alex: In a battle-weary 1992 Dodge Caravan. The old girl has a hard time with hills.
Prentice:  Hahaha yeah, those hills are a bitch.


13. What does the touring cycle look like for Stretford End?

Alex: So far this band has only been on little mini-tours. We hunger to do something bigger, but without a label funding is a major issue. So Millionaires, invest your money now and see a return in as little as 30 days!

14. Where do you see Stretford End five years from now?

Alex: Most likely we'll be the house band at a Taiwan donkey show. Don't forget those drink specials folks! Tip yer waitstaff!

Prentice: VEGAS!  NEW CIRQUE DE SOLEIL!

15. Does your family support you all being musicians?
Alex: Everyone in the band is lucky to have incredibly supportive families.

Prentice: Absolutely! They are all amazing supportive people.  We need that!

16. How about the holiday season what do you hope to find under your Christmas tree? Do you have any New Year's resolutions?

Alex: I want a sloth, because they are awesome. I would name him Mr. Sniffers.

Prentice: I want an official Red Ryder carbine action two hundred shot range model air rifle!  And yes, I know! I won't shoot my eye out...

17. What will become of you guys come 2011?

Alex: God, that sounds so cryptic. I foresee a lot of crying.

Prentice: Besides making fun of the people who believe the world will end the following year?  I don't know... Play some amazing rock and roll and destroy Biebermania.

18. Do you have anything to say to our readers?

Little is known about it but Mattel is going to be releasing it. Coming during the first quarter of the New Year is Clawdeen Wolf's Dead Tired and Bed Playset. Though no photos are available at this time, but it should be a lot like Frankie Stein's and Draculaura's bedding play sets. Now all that's left is the wonder of what theme is behind this, what do you think the daughter of the Wolfman would be caught sleeping in?

Originally using the name Winterwolf as their calling card, death metal/thrahsers now known as Deathchain, have gone through their genre with four albums on their plate. But now two years have passed and what has the band been up too since their last release "Death Eternal" (2008). Well working on the follow-up of course and its entitled "Death Gods".

With this genre has to come great musicians and that is what Deathchain is, they go the extra mile to make sure their material sounds on key and is heavy as hell itself. The eight tracks come packed and ready each extended to four and a half minutes in length having this music seem to last a lot longer than it should, but what’s the harm in that? Opening tune "Storming the Death Gods", really captures their style nailing the numerous breakdowns with constant blast beats that makes each and every solo played on the other selection of tracks that more pulse pumping.

Another set of tunes has to include "The Lion-Head", and "We Are Unearthed", each provides that adrenaline rush of pulsing energy that keeps the music flowing from start to finish. In the long run Deathchain, still has what it takes to keep this genre in check and will continue to do so, for many years to come.

Former frontman Ronnie Radke of Escape the Fate was just released from jail.  But what do the fans have to say about this? A lot of the fans are quite pleased and overrun with joy. Now that Radke is a free man and on the prowl once again what will become of him? Well it just so happens that Radke has formatted a project that he's been in tune with since his departure from Escape the Fate, entitled Falling In Reverse. So now that he's free to do what he's been known to do best, we shall see what will become of this mismanaged misfit that has been unleashed.

Modesto, Californian's Crow caught up with me to discuss this new formation of rock n' roll. Blending the combination of Alice in Chains meets Pantera; Crow have built a solid ground for what they want out of this project. But this isn’t the only project that has been created; Wooden Jesus was formed using some of the same members of Crow so by doing this a whole another reality has been built.
 
1. So you have to tell me does the name Crow have any reference to the film of the same name? Have you seen any of those films?

Andrew :  I’ve always been a huge fan of Black Sabbath, Pantera, COC, DOWN, Metallica, Sepultura, Alice, GnR, Zep, Floyd, Skynyrd etc.,  these are all the bands I grew up listening to and are heavily influenced by and initially wanted to form a band in that same vein musically.  I was writing these riffs and songs and knew I needed a name for the project so I decided to call it Stoned Crow and then eventually just Crow. Then I started playing with Zach and we would jam on Crow and material that would later become Wooden Jesus with him on drums. Then Wooden Jesus formed and we just kept working on Crow whenever we could until now. So to answer your question, no., and no.......I did have the soundtrack though haha.

2. How about telling me about the band, why did you want to create this project? Is it different than your other project, Wooden Jesus or would you say the same?

Zach:  Like Andrew mentioned, we’ve always wanted to have a band like this, writing music like Sabbath, Corrosion of Conformity, Down, Pantera ya know, just heavy shit that moves, shit that can groove out or be aggressive as fuck ya know, different moods all in one song, whatever we want to do.   Andrew had songs from way back when, that were grouped under the name Crow back in like 2002. Years later around 2009, I had a few songs together that I’d been messing around with that were in this same vein so Andy and I started jamming on them and we ended up calling Eric because we always wanted to jam with him.  Wooden Jesus was doing their thing, Eric was in a band called SEIP and they were doing their thing at the time, so it was just us jamming around.

So we got together and Eric really liked the riffs and we were all really excited about the energy and the potential of the project.  I ended up having to move to Reno NV for work so everything was put on hold for a while.  Wooden Jesus recorded our album while I was in Reno, and I was only over there for about 3 months so right when I got back we hit Eric up and let him know we wanted to get this thing going again.  Eric mentioned that Josh and Mikey were both interested so we started talking about getting together to kind of feel things out and see who was gonna do what, cause I was originally going to play guitar and Josh was going to play bass.  Josh was one of the guitar players in SEIP and Mikey was the original bass player in SEIP but was in another band at the time.



Right in the mix of us meeting up and hanging out SEIP broke up which meant this was no longer a side project for Eric and Josh.  Now that this was their main band Josh really wanted to play guitar and I was really torn between drums and guitar, but with Josh being such a great player I thought it would be best for the band if I went to drums which I’m totally cool with.  So with me making the move to drums and Josh going to guitar we needed a bass player.  From the start we wanted this band to be made up of buddies ya know, making sure the personalities were right was just as important as everything else, so the first name that Eric and Josh brought for a bass player was Mikey which made sense because he was a friend of all of ours and he wasn’t happy with the band he was with, the line up was set.  Andy and I were already kinda calling this thing Crow so we were just really hoping all the guys would like the name, lol.

Crow is very different from Wooden Jesus, musically, the writing process, just the personalities within the band are very different.  With Wooden Jesus Andy writes all of the music while I’ve contributed a very small amount of the lyrics it’s pretty much all him. As far as Crow goes I’ve brought in songs, Andy has brought in some great songs as well, Josh has brought in some really cool riffs to round out songs and really cool parts.  Eric writes all of the lyrics and contributes, along with Mikey to arrangements, and melodies, so it’s a little different as far as the song writing process goes.  This whole thing is still very, very new so we are still learning and shaping as a whole so it’s been really exciting.

Eric: Like Zach said earlier on, we all wanted this project to be good crunchy metal, something you can bang your head to as well as understand, and break down. In my previous band S.E.I.P. it just seemed like we weren’t gonna make it too far because of petty differences, everything just got heavier and faster, which is not always a bad thing. It just seemed like we had lost our drive and it became more of a job than a hobby, a job you didn’t get paid for, which sucks. So with this project we are fixing those problems before they tear us apart like S.E.I.P., so it’s definitely different from my last project or I wouldn’t do it. lol!! The biggest thing on my list was to get a demo out ASAP, it just seemed like our last band procrastinated to the fullest extent, so we all set down and laid out where we want to be, and how we're gonna do it. So far so good.

Mikey: Well I was playing in another band that I wasn’t happy with the direction it was going, Eric had hit me up talking about starting a new project with Zach and Andy from Wooden Jesus and talked about what direction they wanted to go with the music and I was all for it. We pretty much all grew up liking the same type of music and still listen to those same bands, next thing I knew Crow was formed, and I’ve been loving the music we have been making ever since.

3. Who's all in the band and who does what?

4. Since the band's formation you've played few shows on/off what has the crowd's reaction been thus far? How was the headlining gig get positive or negative feedback?

Zach:  Man it’s been really good, there’s an actual buzz about this band, there was anticipation.  A lot of people that followed S.E.I.P. were really curious to see what was up.  People that follow Wooden Jesus really wanted to see what we were up to with Crow.  And then people really just wanted to see what we would being doing together between the two bands members, especially because SEIP and Wooden Jesus were pretty different sounding bands.  The first show was really cool, great turnout.

Eric: It was a bit nerve racking after not playing for six months or so. You keep asking yourself " are we ready?", but once you get back on stage and get going, well it’s just like sex, just because you haven’t done it in awhile doesn’t mean you don’t know how. lol! But ya, it’s been really good, and every time we play, we get tighter and tighter, starting to feel like home.

Mikey: I think it went pretty good, people already knew around the area that S.E.I.P. had broken up and the former members were starting a new band in a different direction, not just “the heavier the better”.  With Wooden Jesus already being an established band in the area there was a really good turn-out and, the crowd’s response to the music was great.

5. Would Wooden Jesus and Crow ever play a show together?

Zach:  Ya know, at first I was all about that, logistically it makes sense, you go out with one band on a tour, or a couple of shows or whatever, you take both bands and you get more bang for your buck, but I don’t know now.  These bands are SOOO different, not so much the music but just dynamics and personalities in general I don’t know if it would work, we’ll see.

Mikey: That would be completely up to Zach and Andy, but like they said before, the styles are not the same and I would rather have them focusing on one band at a time.

Eric: I agree with Zach, I want everyone to focus on this project when it comes to shows. I think it would be too much of a mind fuck for these guys to play two different genres of music on the same night and give one hundred percent to both.

6. What about 2010 what else does it have in store for Crow for the remainder of this year leading into next year?

Zach:  We are so antsy right now, (at least I am!) we’re really making things go right now and its going to lay down the ground work for an amazing 2011.  We had a big show at the Knitting Factory in Reno, NV October 28th with Dirt Communion and White Witch Canyon which was great. We have another headlining slot at the Fat Cat in Modesto on 11/20 to get our demo out there which we just finished.  We really pushed to finish the demo so we would have it in hand for Reno, but with it being so last minute we didn’t even get to listen to it or adjust levels before taking it up there so it is a rough mix but it gets the point across. With the holidays coming up we are just focusing on key shows until the New Year.  We just booked studio time for our debut full length album in late January with Adam Ruppell (Systematic) at Pro View Studios.  We are reeeeeeaalllly pumped to work with Adam. I think we are on the same page on so many levels I’m really looking forward to it.



Mikey: I’m actually really excited about what we are doing right now we just got done with the demo that I’m happy about, it’s been awhile since I have been in a studio and it felt great to be back in there again we had a great show in Reno where the crowd response was amazing it seemed like we could not stop handing out demos and when is are next show, I think we are really looking forward to getting the full length recorded and finished by the middle of the next year  and getting merchandise out there for are fans, I can’t wait for next year.

7. Why should people listen to your band?

Eric: I think people will find what they’re looking for in Crow, we touch ground on so many genres which makes easy to relate to. You can take one of our songs and relate it to an aspect in your own life, even if that’s not what the lyrics meant to me when I wrote them. That’s why I think we'll grab your ass up and not let go!

Zach:  There are so many bullshit bands out there right now, I know you’ve heard this same shit a thousand times but it’s true. All these metal bands sound the fucking same.  All these rock bands on the radio all sound the fucking same.  We are writing shit we love to listen to, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Skynyrd, Corrosion of Conformity, Down, we love that shit and that’s what we’re doing, not that I’m comparing us to them, but that’s what inspires us in the band when we write.  I feel like such an asshole when I’m talking to someone about music and they start naming off all of these new bands or even bands that have been around for a while that I don’t know of, and don’t give two shits about, because I seriously listen to like 10 bands (regularly), there are more than that, that I actually listen to every once in a while, but for the most part it’s like 10 bands.  I have a group of bands that I really like and I don’t give a fuck what else is out there, until I hear it and like it, then I’ll listen to them too, lol.  Like this band Graveyard that I stumbled onto, they are fucking amazing, if you haven’t heard them check them out.

Mikey:  We make great fucking music, we write what we love and we all have a different influence in this band, I love the different styles we incorporate in each song it’s like a blender of good music. We’re not looking to write some song that gets played all over the radio. It’s hard to determine what band is playing what anymore, music has changed so much since I was younger it seems more about image then what your writing or playing, don’t get me wrong, no disrespect to the newer metal or rock, It’s just not what influences me to play music.

8. For the people that don’t know who Crow is what should they know?

It was supposed to be titled “Vampires Rule” but since it’s now the era of the Vampires, it’s clear to say that “Vampires Suck”.  So with that said, the movie follows the hit franchise known as Twilight. But this whole comic franchise comes from the makers who gave us, Date Movie, Epic Movie, Disaster Movie, Meet the Spartans, you get the picture. So you know with such goofy franchises as it were, this new adaption should fall right into place. Which it indeed does, Twi-hard fanatics are humiliated with it comes to Stephanie Meyer's saga that goes into an assortment of gags from start to finish, it manages to nail this so-called saga precisely on target. The story focuses on Becca Crane (Jenn Proske) who returns to Sporks, Washington, to live with her stepfather the sheriff. When it comes to school, she meets Edward Sullen (Matt Lanter) who's apparently a part of the mysterious Sullen family of Vampires. Anyway, Jacob White (Chris Riggi) who sports his Native-American werewolf attire, tail and all from time to time, being shirtless on screen. So whether if you've seen the films or not, "Vampires Suck" manages to recapture the whole saga in just one take and that's not bad at all.

Avril Lavigne's fourth album "Goodbye Lullaby" will be released on March 8, 2011. She’s set to debut the LP’s first single “What The Hell” on Dick Clark’s Rockin’ New Year’s Eve and, strangely, she worked on the the album with (among others) Deryck Whibley, who she filed for divorce from last year. Get more details on Avril’s upcoming set of jams below.

Dr. Luke, who produced Lavigne’s last two big hits “Keep Holding On” and “Girlfriend”, is nowhere to be found in the press release for the album. (Perhaps that 2007 lawsuit surrounding “Girlfriend” has something to do with the end of their working relationship?)

However, Luke’s frequent collaborator Max Martin lent his skills to the LP’s sessions, as did Whibley, Evan Taubenfeld (Lavigne’s guitarist for a number of years) and Butch Walker, who produced songs on Avril’s previous two records.

Other tracks included on the album include “Stop Standing There” (which is said to have a ’50s girl group feel), “Smile”, “Push”, “Wish You Were Here” and “Goodbye.”

The cover artwork for "Beast", the fifth album from Santa Barbara, California metallers DEVILDRIVER, can be viewed below (courtesy of Bloody-Disgusting.com). Due on February 22, 2011 via Roadrunner Records, the CD was recorded at Sonic Ranch studios in Tornillo, Texas with producer Mark Lewis (TRIVIUM, CHIMAIRA, ALL THAT REMAINS) and is currently being mixed by acclaimed British producer Andy Sneap (MEGADETH, EXODUS, MACHINE HEAD, NEVERMORE, ARCH ENEMY) at his Backstage studio in Derbyshire, England. The band recorded 14 songs during the "Beast" sessions, with 11 or 12 tracks expected to make the final cut.

"The record is extreme," vocalist Dez Fafara told Revolver magazine. "And it attacks from start to finish. If you liked [2007's] 'The Last Kind Words', this is like that on steroids and crank, driving a Buick Skylark 200 miles an hour straight to Vegas."

"I felt like I was waking up and experiencing a moment of clarity that brought out all these pissed off, negative emotions," Fafara said of making the album. "It's an all-out release of pain.

"It's been a beast of a year and a half, and it's still going," he added.

Regarding the new album's musical direction, drummer John Boecklin stated, "It's interesting to me — it's not the fastest shit we have done, nor the slowest, [but it] just [has] lots of groove. But to me, when people say 'it's got groove,' I think it's a nice way of saying simple and boring these days. We wanted to avoid this.

Good Charlotte's fifth album to date "Cardiology” has been long overdue. Since we last heard from Good Charlotte was precisely three years ago when the era of "Good Morning Revival", (2007) was in existence. Now that the past is far behind them, Good Charlotte has stepped forward and this time around, it’s like the band hasn’t really changed much of anything.

The music displayed on this album is quick each song decrypting the same formula over and over using the same chorus structure and instrumental texture that it just lags the quality of the music altogether. This formula has been overused so much so that it’s lost its touch. Good Charlotte hasn’t changed at all really either.

Their appearance may have but their musical style has not which is sad. The old school Good Charlotte days was when the band were at their best, the dawn of “The Young and the Hopeless”, (2002) and “The Chronicles of Life and Death”, (2004) was when the band were in a darker focus and full of life. This time, “Cardiology”, is just the rebirth of “Good Morning Revival” (2007) and that’s saying something, because repeating yourself twice is a problem, but will it happen a third time, most likely.
