Metalcore act BOUND take the metalcore genre and blend it with the hardcore genre of those vocalization, to create their own unique take on said genres. With that, the band has gone to release their first single titled "Rust", with a follow-up single out soon! Aside from that, they plan to play more shows, tour, and release more music, the band discussed it all below.
1. Please tell us about the history of your band and its members.
For me, this was my first time in a band. I’ve spent time around the scene since I was 15, doing merch for local bands in the Hudson Valley and attending shows. I only began doing vocals in 2022 for fun. Maiko (guitar) is a well versed musician who is capable, but not limited to, vocals, guitar, drums, and bass. He has been playing music for 20 years with past projects spanning many genres.
Maiko and I met when I moved to CT and was getting involved in the scene. We developed a quick friendship and I began doing merch at his band’s shows when I could. Maiko and I played around with the idea of starting a band after I started doing features in his band, Rakefire, in which he was the vocalist. We did a few demos and after some time we decided it was time to get some members. Diego (guitar) was an obvious addition, and after he showed interest in being involved with the project there was no hesitation to have him on. Maiko and Diego played in Rakefire together and Diego and I became friends through that.
Then, Maiko and I put out some feelers via social media for a drummer and bassist. Ethan (drums) and Garrett (bassist) were the first people to reach out who were serious about taking the positions. Ethan is a well rounded musician who is capable of vocals, guitar, and (obviously) drums. His style of drumming wasn’t usually metal but I belief that gave a fresh perspective to our sound. He plays in the pocket a lot and has a lot of good input. Ethan had never been in a band before either which was comforting to me considering I felt as if I was out of my element on this side of music. Garrett (bass) was essentially born into music with a ton of family history doing so.
He mostly plays guitar but saw the opportunity for playing bass and, as he says “just wanted to be in a cool band”. He has a job in the industry and is your classic “rock n roll” guy. Garrett is also multi talented and has played in a few other projects as well. We had one practice all together in the basement of an ex-coworker of mine (thank you, Erica) and that was that!
2. What’s the origin of the band’s name?
In the way beginning, while Maiko and I were playing around with demos, when the only members were him and I, we went to a bar after a “writing session” (aka Maiko wrote all the instruments as I sat on the floor, drank Redbull, and tried to convince his cats to love me). Maiko mentioned how we should start thinking about a name. Something about me is that I love a good list. I’ve had a list on my phone of band names that I hear in passing and have had this current list since 2021. I opened my notes app and we started scrolling.
The first name that we agreed upon was Hidebound, which is a word I came across in a book that was written in the 60s. Hidebound is defined as unwilling or unable to change because of tradition or convention. We spelt it like “Hydebound” because we searched and found a few bands with the original spelling. I don’t quite remember the amount of time that went by but Maiko approached me later on about changing the name to Bound and I immediately loved it. He did a search to see if there were any current bands/musicians under than name and couldn’t find any and so, Bound was named.
3. Where is the band based out of and what is your music scene like there? Are there any local bands you could recommend?
Bound is based out of CT. I am from NY and Maiko is from ME. Ethan, Garrett, and Diego are the true CT born people in the band and are from throughout the state. We all live in CT and so we say we’re from CT or western CT! The scene here, from my perspective, is best described as moody. Sometimes I feel like it is a tight nit community with a lot of events going on. Other times I feel like it becomes so cliquey that the activity drops.
All in all, no hate towards this scene. When I moved here in 2020, it accepted me with open arms and I felt “home” in a way. As mentioned, I love lists and have a list on my phone of local CT bands that are not only awesome sounding but great to work with and good people. Obvious mentions would be Ethan’s other project, In Spite of You, and Diego’s other project, Mercy Whip. Some personal favorites would be Trench, Syro Valley, No Honor Among Thieves, Justice Blade, Agonized, and Intrusive. However, I could go on and on.
4. How would you describe your style?
The way I describe our style is metalcore sounds with hardcore vocals. I don’t know if that’s the best way to describe it but it’s the only way I know! Yelly vocals, dive bombs, tough breakdowns, tight drums.
5. What have you released so far and what can someone expect from your works?
Our first single released was “rust”, which was the first full demo Maiko and I wrote. “rust” is inspired by the definition of the word hidebound. It is written about the frustrations of dealing with someone who refuses to change/grow. Our second single out is “what about em”. This was written as an intro song. When we changed the name to Bound, I kept thinking of that song by that not-so-great-anymore artist in which we will not mention.
However, I thought it would be interesting to use it as a sample. I always describe “what about em” to people as “the guys time to shine” considering it’s a minute and a half of breakdowns with one lyric. It is the first song we play in our set and I think it gets its point across as to what we are all about and what the crowd is in for.
6. Do you have any new music in the works?
We’re releasing a single next week and have a few songs past what we’ve released in total, hoping to record more music in the future.
7. How about playing shows and touring, have anything planned out?
We have a handful of shows left throughout the year, a lot of which is out of state. We will resume touring next year most likely!
8. What plans do you have for the future as a band?
No plans that I (Maiko) am aware of. Keep it simple, stay writing music and touring.
9. Where can we listen to your band and where can we buy your stuff?
We are on all streaming platforms, hoping to get a cassette together in the future. You can order any of our merch through Instagram, we’ve been shipping stuff out quite a bit.
10. What is it you’d like a listener to remember the most when hearing your music for the first time?
Life is short and everyone has free will!
