Monach's Discussion on Music and Playing!

Alternative rockers MONACH do have a full-length album out called "Duner", featurng content that has a bit of everything pretty much. The band has newer music in the works as well as plans to head out doing some shows this spring time! Even so the band goes into discussion about the music and plans on playing shows between now into the late summer!

1. Please tell us about the history of your band and its members.

It’s been quite a shift since the inception of the band. We started out in 2018 with a completely different lineup than we do now; Andrew is the only original member remaining. The band started as a passion project between a few friends jamming in a basement apartment and grew pretty quickly. Eventually people moved in different directions and there was a big shift in the band. We met Nick at a show, Wryan while recording our debut album “Duner”, and Noah came in recently which means he doesn’t show up in pictures yet.

2. What’s the origin of the band’s name?

So we used to go by the name Hot Knives; it was a fun name that people got into pretty quick. But we noticed that we weren’t the only clever people who decided to run with that name. We knew eventually we would have to switch due to legality issues. We spent a month or two coming up with names and landed on Monach. One of us found the word 'Monachopsis' - The subtle but persistent feeling of being out of place. We thought it suited well with the ideas and music we were writing. We’ve had mixed reviews on the new name, mostly a lot of confusion on how to pronounce it, but after it’s settled in for a bit we’ve definitely grown more fond of it.

3. Where is the band based out of and what is your music scene like there? Are there any local bands you could recommend?

We’re based out of Kingston, ON. The scene here is truly hectic in a good way. It’s a college/university town so demographic wise it’s perfect and there’s tons of places to play. Listen Up Kid is a local favorite, and we’re planning a run with them in the spring. Voyager is rad, Sian Alcorn is doing some great stuff. Our good friend Spencer sings in a band called Counter Culture and they’re really fun to watch.

4. How would you describe your style?

It’s kind of a mix of pop punk, and more ambient/melodic emo stuff. We’ve all got some pretty wide tastes in music, so there’s a lot to pull from. Our first full length has a lot of dancey pop punk songs, our new stuff is more melodic and layered. It’s nice being able to cover lots of ground and still have it be us.

5. What have you released so far and what can someone expect from your works?

So far we have a full length out, it’s called Duner, it’s on everything, it’s out there, it’s probably even on Tinder at this point. It covers a good amount of ground sonically, there’s some pop punk dance anthem type stuff on there and there’s some more dynamic tracks. It’s something we really recommend you sit down and listen to in full, we’re really proud of it front to back.

6. Do you have any new music in the works?

We do! There’s a couple new songs we’ve been demoing out, that we’re not 100% where or what they’ll end up on, whether that be an EP or LP2. We’re also planning on doing an Acoustic EP with some of the songs off the full length!

7. How about playing shows and touring, have anything planned out?

We’re currently in the middle of booking an Ontario run in April, and then we’ll be back out in August as well! We’ve got some stuff sprinkled between there too.

8. What plans do you have for the future as a band?

With our new lineup finally cemented the plan is to write & play out as much as we can. Like we said before we have a lot of influence to pull from & everyone’s prior band history is all over genre wise. We all write a lot on our own and so there’s always new stuff coming through. We’re really stoked to do these runs in April & August so that we can connect with bands in other cities and more importantly build a fanbase and connect with the people at those shows. We’re all really big on genuine social connection and we hope we can build that bridge for our listeners.

9. Where can we listen to your band and where can we buy your stuff?

We’re on all the major streaming platforms, Spotify, Apple Music, etc. You can also buy Duner on Bandcamp, and we’re currently building our website to have things in one collective spot.

10. What is it you’d like a listener to remember the most when hearing your music for the first time?

Transparency, honesty, really. We try really hard to be as honest as we can lyrically, and to write songs that hopefully affect people in a comforting way, or make them think.
