Kyle Jordan Talks of Backstory, Music, and More!

Modern day rocker KYLE JORDAN has released a handful of single's, with a whole lot more songs underway and on the way soon! He goes into his history about how he's dealt with music, life, future plans, and what his music has in-store from here on out!

1. Please tell us about the history of your band and its members.

The Kyle Jordan Project is a modern rock band inspired by the powerful, anthemic styles of bands like Imagine Dragons, The Glorious Sons, and Twenty-One Pilots. I'm Kyle Jordan May, the founder, drummer, songwriter, and occasional guitarist.

Our project began as a deeply personal journey rooted in storytelling, shaped by my own experiences, including surviving a life-threatening brain tumor, navigating divorce, and coping with the loss of a very close friend, as well as my aunt and grandmother, who were like a mother to me. Moving from a small farming community in Alberta to the vibrant music scene in Victoria, B.C., has also been a significant part of our journey.

The band first came together when I joined forces with Greg Van Kerkhof, my co-writer and an essential creative force in shaping our songs. Shortly after, Erick Gerber joined us, bringing his unique guitar style that fits perfectly with our modern rock sound. Together, we've written and crafted music that blends raw, emotive lyrics with the high-energy, contemporary rock edge that defines our style.

Our songs mix themes of resilience, human connection, and a touch of humor, reflecting a journey of self-discovery and triumph over life’s obstacles. We also enjoy collaborating with other musicians, like trumpet player Josué García García, who added his signature sound to our single "Mexico,” and Katie Burke, the female vocalist in our first single “Loved By You.”

At its heart, The Kyle Jordan Project is about defying expectations and connecting with people through music that’s both intense and relatable. We love the journey and the power of modern rock to move people, making every performance an experience to remember.

2. What’s the origin of the band’s name?

The name The Kyle Jordan Project is all about capturing what makes us unique. I’m kind of like the executive producer on this, a bit like what DJ Khaled or Mark Ronson do, but with a personal twist—I’m hands-on not just in shaping the sound but also in writing and playing the music myself. I play drums, guitar, and sometimes even sing, which makes the process pretty personal and lets me keep the creative vision close.

Greg, Erick, and I are the core members of the band, giving our music a steady, reliable foundation to build on. But collaboration is a big part of what we do. We love bringing in other musicians to play on many of our tracks, adding new textures and ideas that keep our sound fresh. That’s why calling it a “project” felt right—it captures the spirit of collaboration and evolution that defines us. It’s more than just a band in the traditional sense.

3. Where is the band based out of and what is your music scene like there? Are there any local bands you could recommend?

We’re semi-based out of Victoria, B.C., so when we play and tour, we plan enough in advance to make it work. We are currently planning a 2026 tour. Along the way, we’ve met some incredible artists who aren’t all from one place, which makes our journey even more inspiring. A few of the standout indie bands I’ve gotten to know include Die Tired, Sylvana White (formerly known as Sylva from Infini-T), Scarlet Tantrum, Trevor Kidd, Sever The Bond, Riiver Brukes, Katie Burke, and Killian Ruffley.

One artist from Victoria I’d also recommend is my friend Leeroy Stagger. He’s well-known in the roots rock scene, and his authenticity and sound really resonate. There’s so much talent out there, and I believe strongly in the power of artists coming together to support each other. It’s what makes the music scene feel alive and connected, and it’s a big part of what drives us forward.

4. How would you describe your style?

Our style is a blend of modern rock with roots influences, so you’ll hear elements of rock, blues, and a bit of folk mixed in. We’re inspired by bands like Imagine Dragons, The Glorious Sons, and Twenty One Pilots, and we bring that anthemic, high-energy vibe into our music. At the same time, we love storytelling and exploring raw, real-life experiences, which adds a narrative depth to our sound.

We aim for a mix that’s both powerful and relatable—something that people can feel and connect with on different levels. Whether it’s a rock anthem or a more reflective track, our music is all about capturing human emotions and experiences and putting it all out there.

5. What have you released so far and what can someone expect from your works?

Our past releases, like Mexico, Loved By You, and Jenny, Girl with a Broken Smile, have really leaned into our roots/Americana side—they were our first singles and gave us a solid foundation. But with Demons, we're kicking off a new chapter. This one brings that anthemic, modern rock energy, complete with big drum sounds, unique guitar and bass tones, and a lot more intensity.

Demons has a bit of a story behind it too. I actually started writing it just a few days after getting out of the hospital from brain surgery, where I was cautioned I might never regain the use of my right eye—which, against all odds, I did. This track has some real grit to it, partly because of those experiences and partly because of the musical influences that shaped it. My drumming style owes a lot to John Bonham, and you can hear some of that here. Erick also loves to sneak in touches of blues and even math rock, so there’s always something unique happening in the sound.

After Demons, we’re dropping Tall Blonde Honey on January 1st—a real banger to kick off the new year. And sometime in 2025, people are going to hear our take on London Calling, re-imagined as if it were written today but with enough respect for the original that it won’t feel sacrilegious.

On top of all that, Demons is our first release with SODEH Records, and we're thrilled to be working with them. We’re in a new era with this anthemic rock sound, and we can’t wait to show everyone where we’re headed next.

6. Do you have any new music in the works?

We’re constantly creating and writing; right now, we’re sitting on over 25 songs in various stages of recording. We only release what feels true to our sound, so we’ve got quite a few B-sides that may not make the cut for us but are perfect for other artists. We’re always open to letting songs find their way to the right artist, and it’s cool to see our work take on a new life elsewhere.

Another big part of what we do is offering our services as a band. We’re setting up a page on our website soon where artists can reach out to have The Kyle Jordan Project play on their single or album. Whether you need drums, guitar, bass, background vocals, or songwriting, we’ve got you covered—everything from a single track to a full song. We already work with other artists to help develop their sound or whatever else they need, and we love the collaborative process. This will just help make it a little more official.

If we’re not playing somewhere as The Kyle Jordan Project, there’s a good chance you’ll catch one of us supporting other artists as hired musicians. We’re musicians at heart and love jumping into different styles and projects. We always have something going on, and that’s how we like it!

7. How about playing shows and touring, have anything planned out?

We’re currently in the planning stages for a 2026 tour! We’re excited to take The Kyle Jordan Project on the road and connect with fans in new places. Right now, we’re sorting out the details to make it a great experience for everyone involved, so keep an eye out for updates. 2026 is going to be a big year, and we can’t wait to bring our live show to more stages!

8. What plans do you have for the future as a band?

Ultimately, our focus is on growth—building our catalog, collaborating with more artists, and bringing our music to as many people as possible. We’re always creating, and we’re thrilled about what’s coming next!

9. Where can we listen to your band and where can we buy your stuff?

You can find The Kyle Jordan Project on all major streaming platforms, including Spotify, Apple Music, and YouTube, so you can stream our music wherever you like. If you're looking to support us directly, you can buy our tracks on platforms like Amazing Radio or sign up to our Patreon where we’ll also have exclusive content from time to time.

We’re also setting up a merch section on our website, so keep an eye out for that if you’re interested in grabbing some band gear. For the latest updates and links, follow us on our socials and check out our website. It’s all about making it easy for fans to connect with us and our music!

10. What is it you’d like a listener to remember the most when hearing your music for the first time?

Our music is more than just sound; it’s a part of our soul, our being. Every track we create carries pieces of who we are—it’s our lives, our struggles, and our triumphs woven into melodies and lyrics. When you listen to The Kyle Jordan Project, you’re experiencing a part of us that we’re putting out there, raw and unfiltered. This isn’t just music for the sake of music; it’s a real extension of ourselves.

Each song takes something from the three of us, blending our energies and perspectives into something that’s deeply personal. We hope listeners can feel that when they press play—that it’s not just entertainment but an honest connection. We want our music to resonate in a way that makes people feel they’re not just listening, but sharing in our journey, carrying a part of us with them even after the song ends.
