Indoorsmen Discusses EP Series, Singles, and What's Next!

Alternative post punk band INDOORSMEN have two single's out with a two part EP release expected this spring and summer time! The band even has more music underway as well. The band discusses the music that they create and where they see themselves ending up.

1. Please tell us about the history of your band and its members.

Indoorsmen sort of formed by accident. Adam (drums), Drew (vocals), and James (guitar) were in a band together in college called Release but didn’t end up recording the songs they wrote. In early 2020, Dave (bass guitar) had a few songs that he was thinking about recording and asked Adam to jam with him on them. After a couple sessions Adam suggested bringing in Drew and James to jam on the songs. After learning Dave’s stuff, the guys started bringing up the old Release songs, and Dave’s new parts helped flesh them out. And thus the band was formed. This all happened right at the start of COVID so instead of playing shows like most new bands would do, we went into the studio and started laying down tracks. Several songs had rhythm guitar parts and we didn’t have anyone to play them. Thankfully Adam knew Levi (rhythm guitar) from working with him and he’s been with us ever since.

2. What’s the origin of the band’s name?

We all enjoy indoor activities (video games, napping, watching movies, etc) and felt that the indoors doesn’t get quite the same rep as the outdoors. Like you don’t brag about binging several movies in the way you’d talk up a hiking trip. So those ideas along with being forced inside due to the pandemic directed our thinking as we bounced around name ideas….we probably cycled through about 50 names. It was a running joke for the longest time.

3. Where is the band based out of and what is your music scene like there? Are there any local bands you could recommend?

We are based out of Chicago, IL, USA. There is a pretty good DIY scene here, feels like there are an endless number of bands popping up around the city. There is also a lot of variety in those bands. You see a fair number of heavier bands (hardcore, metal, etc) but then you’ve also got a lot of indie rock bands and folks playing more mellow styles. So that variety is pretty cool to be part of.

4. How would you describe your style?

Our go to description is Alternative Post-Punk, but you could easily call it Hard Rock Pop or something like that. James has a lot of metal influences in his style and tone. Adam leans more into punk rock stylings but can play any sort of drums. Dave has more funk influences but also played in a grunge band in college. Levi has more of a blues style of guitar play, but also really enjoys heavy music. Drew has the ability to sing in a myriad of voices. So we blend these styles together and see what happens. Our only focus while writing is  creating songs that we enjoy playing and keep really open communication as we’re writing songs. We mostly avoid writing overly long songs or songs with a bunch of crazy techniques. Solid, polished, catchy songs are our wheelhouse.

5. What have you released so far and what can someone expect from your works?

We released our first two singles “Panic Attack” and “Be Like This” in February and are releasing our first EP “Cleaning House, Pt. 1” on March 25th! Part 2 of the EP series will be released later this summer.

6. Do you have any new music in the works?

Yes it’s kind of a problem actually haha. We’ve really hit a groove with songwriting because there aren’t shows to prep for, so it seems like we come up with at least one new song idea every practice. These ideas come from each of us, so there is always a new riff or progression to explore.

7. How about playing shows and touring, have anything planned out?

We are playing a livestream show to celebrate the release of our EP on March 25th at The Bunker. It will be broadcast live on YouTube starting at 8:30pm CST, and then the videos will be available for anyone to watch after that on YouTube.. Link to the livestream: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCTTM7QSX7sHygbmbGj1JWvA.

As far as future shows go, we’re hoping this summer to get to play in some venues around Chicago, even doing outdoor shows if they are available. But right now that’s all still up in the air.

8. What plans do you have for the future as a band?

We are about to shoot a music video and then planning to jump back into the recording studio some point later this year to record our next batch of songs. Hopefully start playing some shows.

9. Where can we listen to your band and where can we buy your stuff?

You can find our music on spotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/0243auNFLcRkZmvxMtij5y?si=pVfkb8UXRM6sPoIKfTjxPQ.

10. What is it you’d like a listener to remember the most when hearing your music for the first time?

We’re just getting started, follow along for our upcoming releases. There is going to be a lot of variety in our songs so we’ll have something for everyone.
