A Poison Alibi's Volkan Talks Through the Pain and Peril of Musicianship

Rock n' roll/post hardcore act, A Poison Alibi, got together in the likes of Las Vegas, NV, they wrote and recorded a debut EP "Through Pain and Peril" with current activity as to releasing a debut full-length real soon with plans to play shows as much as possible! Guitarist Volkan Tonga discusses their debut EP release, follow-up process, and future plans!

1. Please tell us about the history of your band and its members.

Volkan: Hey thanks for checking this interview out, my name is Volkan and I play guitar for A Poison Alibi. This band was started about two years ago by Omar and Taylor, I used to be in a band with Omar and I guess their guitarist had some problems going on and I was asked to join and help write the EP and we’re very proud of what that EP did for us.

2. Why the name A Poison Alibi?

Volkan: The name actually comes from one of our songs called “When In Doubt.” Our vocalist Omar is talking about some troubles he was going through at the time and “A Poison Alibi” made it easier for him to hide..

3. Where is the band based out of and what is your music scene like there? Are there any local bands you could recommend?

Volkan: To be completely honest, we don’t think Las Vegas has much to offer local musicians. The city constantly makes it really hard for All-Ages venues to exist and has set forth various precautions to make them very difficult to operate. This kills bands like us with a mix of young and old fans. We’ve been focusing on playing shows outside of Vegas for a couple months now, just because we think it does more for us.

4. How would you describe your style? Which bands influenced your music?

Volkan: Our style… Is a little different than what you hear at local shows lately.. We like to think that we play Rock n Roll with maybe a hint of post-hardcore.. The whole genre labeling thing honestly gets too crazy to the point where we just don’t even care what people call it. We just say we make music.

5. What's your take on your EP "Through Pain & Peril" as a whole?

Volkan: This EP is very special to us because it guided us as we were trying to find our sound. As you can hear in these 5 songs, each has it’s own feel and own groove and it also switches between different genres quite a bit. I loved writing such diverse music with no limits, from breakdowns to super poppy parts to old school rock n’ roll guitar solos, I’m all about it..

6. Why should people pick up this EP and check you guys out?

Volkan: I think our EP is a very refreshing bunch of songs anyone could enjoy, you’d be surprised at the crowd we can pull at shows. Our EP also tells a whole story from front to back and that story will be continued. I’d recommend it to anyone that’s just looking for fun songs that they can relate to.. All of these songs have their own meaning and people are free to interpret them in any way they would like.

7. Are you in the process of working on any new material in terms of a follow-up to "Through Pain & Peril"?

Volkan: Yes we started working on our full length almost at the same time the EP dropped, there’s a lot going on that I can’t quite talk about but expect it early 2016.

8. What plans do you have for the future as a band?

Volkan: We see ourselves on the road for months doing what we’ve dreamed of since we were little boys. Doesn’t matter how many people we play to every night, or if people are there at all. As long as our music and make people feel things, we will feel successful. We want to be that band where anyone can message us at any time about ANYTHING and not get judged and we will listen and give you advice, or just lend an ear to anyone.

9. Where can we listen to your band and where can we buy your stuff?

Volkan: Check out apoisonalibi.com for our music and our merch store! All of our shirts are TEN BUCKS!

10. What is it you’d like a listener to remember the most when hearing your music for the first time?

Volkan: To remember that they are never alone, and don’t let anyone tell them they don’t matter because we’ve heard that ALL of our lives and we’re sick of it. We’re here to change that.
