Finnish group Process Pain has processed all they can with their music making. They were founded in 2006 and released two EPs so far with their debut full-length in the developing stages and will soon be released via Inverse Records. Guitarist Sami Sandberg discusses the album's process and the pain they put up with, while getting it all worked upon.
1. Introduce yourself, tell me what you do in Process:Pain, and how long the band has been together?
Sami: I'm Sami Sandberg aged 23 and I'm Process Pains guitarist/songwriter. The band was founded in 2006 but I joined to it in 2007, when I was 17 years old. So the band has been up and running now eight years.
2. Where is the band based out of and what is your music scene like there? Are there any bands you could recommend?
Sami: The band was formed at Vaasa Finland. It's music scene is pretty all-round, but most of my friends are metalheads. The most famous band from Vaasa must be Rotten Sound and I could recommend my other band "Rain Of Acid" which comes also from Vaasa.
3. How would you describe your style? Which bands influence your music?
Sami: Our music is very diverse and melodic. There (are) many pretty brutal riffs and parts in our songs but at the time also very melodic parts and even some clean stuff. If I (have to) pick a genre to us I think (the) modern/melodic death-metal is pretty close. There are so many of them but biggest one's are probably Lamb Of God, Killswitch Engage, Machine Head and a Finnish band called Nicole.
4. What lyrical theme do you guys use in your music? What message do you want to send?
Sami: We don't use any specific theme. But the message we want to send is believe in the things you want to do. Do not let the others influence in to your self-image. Even when you feel like "outcast of society" .
5. Does your vision for coming up with music get affected at all by time?
Sami: No it hasn't not yet anyway. Every time when we have recorded something it sort like boost's us to do even more better and crazier stuff.
6. You guys had pre-production and everything was recorded, mixed, and mastered and all ready to go when it was all started in 2011, but it's been a few years since then so why wait this long to release it?
7. What was it like working with Sami "Hannu" Koivisto, what did he bring to the table for you guys?
Sami: We have recorded all of our releases with Sami and for that working together was easy and relaxed. He made sure that all drum , guitar and bass tracks sounded tight and influenced a lot to vocals on the album. And of course he produced our albums killer sounds.
8. Are you pleased with the final outcome? (sound - production wise).
Sami: Yes, we are pretty proud about it, when it is finally ready, the album art and everything.
9. Did the producer (you) use any (weird) experimental miking and/or recording techniques?
Sami: Everything was recorded, maybe in these days you can call it "old school", so acoustic drums, guitars and bass through an amp and cabinet. Because our recorder Sami is such a professional we didn't have to worry about anything else than nailing our own performances.
10. Are there any "crazy" behind the scenes anecdotes from these sessions that you can share with us?
Sami: We monkey around almost all the other time but in the studio we just focused to do everything properly. In our pre-production session it was a whole different story. We have hell of a lot video material from there and the studio, so maybe we will try do to some kind of video clip from those some day for everyone to see.
11. Did the record company interfere with anything on your "sound" and songs?
Sami: Process Pain wasn't signed to Inverse Records at the time when we were making the album. So we got to do everything like we wanted.
12. Did Inverse Records also release your previous EP releases "The Beginning" (2008) and "The Prologue" (2009)?
Sami: No. Those were both self-publication records.
13. How did you guys get signed to Inverse Records, why go with these guys as opposed to another label, what did they offer you that you could not resist?
Sami: When we got the album ready, we sent it to few Finnish record companies and Inverse Records was the first to contact us. They offered a pretty fair deal to us and Joni was a familiar face to out drummer Teemu so it felt safe to choose them.
14. How about plans for this year and touring, what do you have in mind?
Sami: We will publish the album and after that try to get as many gigs as we can. Of course we are writing new material all the time.
