Obfuscated Autumn Zone's Out On Interview

Mexico's technical progressive death metallers Obfuscated Autumn have released their debut EP release "Inception" and made it available for free HERE. Along with that the band got together to dicuss the EP and future plans.

1. Can I get a backstory on the band/band biography?

Well, I think we have different views of our history, first, I (Joe Martin, vocalist) was seeking musicians who want to get a serious project and of course, something different of what’s in Mexico. Then, I get to Alex and Daniel, both brothers, by a poster where they were looking for a vocal. We get together but I realize they have actually a “metal-core” band and the other guys didn’t fit in what I was looking in a band, obviously the Sandoval brothers have what I was looking for. Since I realize that, I talk to them and I propose to them to make something new, something from cero and what we agree was to play some tech-death music. I liked these guys because we really had too much in common, and therefore it was easy to start this band. Now the three together look for a second guitar and a bass player, some many people came to auditions but no one fits in. After so many time seeking, and a bass player as temporal, Martin and Misael arrived at different time, but since then I could say we are perfectly complete as Obfuscated Autumn.

2. How did you guys come up with your band name?

Our name represent when we get together (Joe, Alex and Daniel) as pillars of the band, we get together in October 2 of 2010. Then, we start composing and decide about what we want to say with our music and the part of “Obfuscated” from the name, represent what we think our world in the nearly future would look like with all the global issues, and that’s what why we named like that.

3. Where is the band based out of and what is your music scene like there? Are there any local bands you could recommend?

The truth is that here in Nuevo Leon, Mexico, it’s hard to grow up as a band, because there are just few people who really appreciate a good musical work, and also there are not any music promoter that support us at all. Here in Mexico you have to grow by your own in this type of genres. Here in Nuevo Leon, people prefer “metal-core” or “thrash-metal” instead, and it’s only one promoter which gives preference to that kind of bands. We think we can only recommend to you a band from Hidalgo, Mexico called “The Greatness Design” and another band from here in Nuevo Leon, called “Inferzenal”.

4. What lyrical theme do you guys use in your music? What message do you want to send?

I write the songs thinking on everything and on every one, I mean, we look to the whole world, to different countries, religions, etc, and the problems that affects us as human beings. We say in our lyrics “Hey, open your fucking eyes! There’s something isn’t in its place, lets make something about it!”. We hate people who makes this world an non-habitable place.

5. What bands have influenced your band and its sound?

The Faceless, definitely them. We all like them and are somehow our biggest influence. Of course we also like bands as Necrophagist, Obscura, Spawn of Possession, Fallujah, and also Veil of Maya, Burning the masses, Born of Osiris.

6. Is there any story or concept behind the Inception title?

I think “Inception” was, literally that, the beginning of our career as Obfuscated Autumn, and the introduction to what we have to say in our lyrics, the inception of chaos.

7. Who produced Inception and what was it like working with them?

Everyone, everyone of us did their part, Daniel and Misael compose guitars, Martin did the bass work on it, Alex compose drums, and I (Joe) did the lyrics. A friend of us was the one who record the EP, his name is David Villarreal, the ex-drummer of Destroy the Motion.

8. Who did the cover art for Inception and how much input did you have on it?

Myself (Joe Martin), I’m not any kind of art designer, but I like to make things my own and to my taste. So one night I was like playing with Photoshop and get some ideas, so I proposed to the guys and they collaborate with some ideas for it.

9. Do you guys have any new music in the works as far as a follow-up release?

We actually are doing something new, something where we will shape our growth as a band.

10. What type of band are you guys?

The one different from others.

11. What are your upcoming touring/show plans?

In December we are playing at “Born of osiris + The contortionist” show here in Nuevo Leon, but in the nearly future we’ll like to go to US and make some noise out there. We think it could be more people who like Obfuscated Autumn than here.

12. Where can we listen to your band and where can we buy your stuff?

You can listen us at the Facebook page (www.facebook.com/obfuscatedautum) or at our YouTube channel (www.yotube.com/obfuscatedautumnmx), in few months we will post where can our merch will be on sale.

13. What is it you’d like a listener to remember the most when hearing your music for the first time?

The effort and the time we put on every song, the complex composition of the guitar, the perfect-timing drums, the clean bass, and of course the message of our songs.

14. What can the fans expect to see from you in the future?

Well, I think a change, I mean, to grow up more, to improve in our work and hopefully to be the best Progressive Tech-death band in Mexico.

15. Any final words of wisdom?

Just to thanks for all the people who are in every single show of us just to listen a few songs of us, to our friends and family for the support in this project. Expect better things from us, that we really are working very hard on it. Thank you for this interview.
